Summary: Where Have All the Newsies Gone?
Review: When I was very small, my parents took me to see a film called "Newsies." I remember the year being 1991 (1st grade for me), but apparently I am mistaken. I was entranced by the catchy songs and fabulous dancing, and wouldn't stop singing them around the house. I convinced my mother (who never really liked the film) to let me go see it again, but alas! the theater no longer played it! I was rather distraught.

Fast forward to 1998. My first year in high school, and a very transitional time for me. Trying to fit in with a whole school of people I had never met before was a little bit hard. I often found myself out of the conversation. But one day, sitting at lunch, I heard someone humming a tune that was very familiar. I knew it was from "Newsies," but I didn't say anything, afraid I was mistaken. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who noticed. Someone started singing the words, and soon, the whole table, including me, was up on its feet imitating the film that had been, for most of us, a favorite. As we recovered ourselves, many people said things like, "I thought I was the only one who knew about that movie," or "I didn't know you liked 'Newsies!'" This experience was one of the things that made me realize that I had a lot more in common with my peers than I had previously thought.

So, in answer to my question: they haven't gone anywhere! Most people between the ages of fourteen and eighteen remember this movie, AND LOVE IT!

Summary: A Great Musical
Review: THE NEWSIES tells the story of how some poor boys in New York had the guts to stand up and let thier voice be heard. They never gave up even though they were beat and even sent jail. The music and acting in this movie is wonderful. The songs will keep you humming the tunes for a long time after the movie and the dance moves are amazing. This is the best disney movie I have ever seen! I highly recommend this movie to everyone!! :)

Summary: Gotta sing, gotta dance, gotta love this movie
Review: An 1899 newsboys strike is the source for this heart-pumping musical. After a severe beating at the box office, video resurrected this forgotten gem and it now enjoys an enormous cult following. "Newsies" revolves, in classic Disney tradition, around a group of pint-sized heroes who decide to strike when publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises the price of his paper, making life a few cents harder for the ragtag bunch. They sing and dance their way through their many frustrations, defeats, and triumphs. What makes this movie so enjoyable is its wide appeal. Younger kids will be swept by the fast-paced story which, at points, seems like an action movie for children. Older kids will get an intriguing history lesson, however simplified, and if you have preteen daughters, they're liable to squeal for the nearly all-male cast. Of course everyone will love the energy of the song and dance numbers.

Frankly I expected the dancing to be a bit more dazzling and was somewhat disappointed that it didn't live up to the show-stopping quality of the songs ("King of New York" being the exception); nevertheless, "Newsies" possesses a very exciting, Broadway quality that immediately draws the audience into the story. Disney was smart in choosing the musical genre to expose today's easy-going youth to the hard-knock life of an earlier generation. (I caution using this movie as any type of historical reference; aside from there being an actual newsies strike, pretty much everything else is either fictionalized, chronologically altered, or overly simplified.) The acting isn't the greatest , but I doubt anyone was aiming for the Oscars here. Robert Duvall, Ann-Margaret, and Christian Bale are duly forgiven for their less than inspiring performances, but somehow they managed to pull together an inspiring film.
