Summary: Chilling
Review: I first saw the movie "The Last Waltz" at a theater in 1977. I was in my late teens at the time and I remember being mesmorized. After seeing the video again just a few weeks ago, I truly had goose-bumps while watching it. What an amazing piece of rock and roll history. When I actually thought of the caliber of talent that was involved in that concert, I ached that I wasn't able to be there in person. It is a real life experience to watch "The Last Waltz". It has had a lasting impact on my life.

Summary: Measuring Stick for all R&R Documentaries to be Measured By!
Review: Rock and Roll bands come and go, but once in a while we are blessed by a gem that comes along. The Band, from thier humble beginnings, to R&R greatness, are well represented in this movie/concert/documentary. An abundance of great performances, tied together by intimate moments and memorable interviews that landmark The Bands place in R&R history.

Summary: I was moved by the chemistry among the members of The Band.
Review: I was too young to know of The Band when they were all working together. I had heard some of their songs on the radio and knew of the songs, but I was not familiar with The Band. I have an older boyfriend who is a musician, and he intoduced me to all of their songs and told me about each of the musicians. He had already seen The Last Waltz, and I watched it with him a couple of months ago for the first time. I was so impressed by the music and the interviews. There was so much respect and chemistry among the members of The Band, it really moved me. I also think that Martin Scorsese did a great job directing. He really put focus on the great music and the lifestyle of being a musician. Each one of the members - Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson - put so much heart and soul into their singing and playing. I also thought it was really unique and special how so many different musicians were able to make an appearance and show their respect for The Band. I enjoyed hearing each of the members talk during the interviews, but I have to say that Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm left a lasting impression with me. The Last Waltz is truly the best combination of interviews and concert footage that I have ever seen. The Band could not have thought of a better way to end their career on the road together. I would love for The Last Waltz to come out on DVD; the sound and picture quality on a DVD would do it more justice than on VHS.

Summary: Needs to be released on DVD
Review: This is an excellent music video whose only fault is it's dated VHS format. It's a classic that deserves a re-release in Dolby Digital.

Summary: Rock & Roll as high art.
Review: One of Scorsese's masterpieces. The Band is joined by some of the Gods of Rock & Roll, (Dylan, Clapton, Young, etc.), for their swan song. While the camera provides perfect focus on the "guests", its primary attention is rightfully on the stars of the show, The Band. Complete with backstage interviews, compelling locations, and a surprise or two thrown in for good measure. A must see for all who understand rocks impact.

Summary: E' grande
Review: E' grande, un bellissimo quadro di quel nuovo Dylan, una band davvero in forma, un evento storicizzato da un bravo e attento direttore. Non può mancare nella nostra collezione.

Summary: A hard to find gem.
Review: The fact that this beautiful film is not available at most big chain video rental stores or libraries, is disturbing and really quite silly. Today's high school senior would love this film and it is a late night, post party rock and roll history lesson. Play it loud!

Summary: ALL SONGS ARE GREAT!
Review: The grat director Scorcese filmed this documentary featuring The Band in interviews and shows. The Band plays happily their farewell show. Many famous artists join the Band on stage and play one song each with enthusiasm. There is a lot of the best of the 70's music; not disco-dancin', but folk, blues and rock'n'roll music - all songs are marvellous! Scorcese is a little too conventional in the shooting, not as creative as he normaly is, but does his job with perfection: the cameras are always on the right image, taking the viewer into the stage. The ending is symbolic: The Band plays a waltz while the camera zooms out- a touch of Scorcese style.

Summary: Beautiful and pained
Review: Were it not for the obtrusive presence of Martin Scorcese, this would be a flawless documentary. The Band is a rare collection of talent, musicianship and a peculiar eloquence that finds expression both in the invidivual interviews and in the music The Band made. The parade of musical luminaries (Muddy, Waters, Van Morrison, Clapton, Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond) across the Winterland stage makes for quite a concert. Yet despite the joy of the music and the chemistry among the The Band and guest artists, the movie's greatest achievement is its most subtle: It leaves you with a pained longing for a group of musicians for whom this concert is an end.
