Summary: Country Comedy -- a speed lesson on perspective
Review: Miss Mona (Dolly Parton) runs a whorehouse that has served generations of Texans. Yes, viewers, Texas has a whorehouse in it! A narcissistic TV news watchdog (Dom DeLuise) executes an expose that everyone in the county already knows about. The Sheriff (Burt Reynolds) loves Miss Mona, and tries to save the whorehouse. The Governor of Texas (Charles Durning) dances the two-step around the whole affair.

Great Broadway songs. Great Cast. A couple of new songs added by Dolly Parton. Funny situations and plenty of parody. Adult humor and fun.

Summary: Not a great film, but brings back memories
Review: My grandmother took me to see this film in 1982. Neither of us realized it was R-rated. I guess the word 'whore' in the title should have tipped us off. Granny was appalled that her beloved Dolly would appear in such filth. I thought the songs were moderately hummable, nowhere near as good as GREASE. But I especially loved the naked, singing football team. I didn't tell Granny.

Summary: The little review you could read...
Review: OK, i have read of few of these reviews and now i am gonna set the record straight.

Plot? Some say no, and it makes wonder what movie they watched. If there is no plot then there is no movie. Your plot is a small town sheriff with big dreams, a prostitute running a 150 year old brothel, and their love story. Despite all the singin', dancin', and sinnin' that is what it amounts to.

Message? Pick one. From Mona and Ed Earl's conversation about religion to "The Watch Dog" reports to the Governor's song and dance right on to Ed Earl's explanation of what the Chicken Ranch stands for, this movie is chocked full of messages. Unbiblical as some may be, the playwright's messages are very clear.

Character's? Well, there really are only two principle roles. Mona and Sheriff Ed Earl. Both characters are well defined, not to mention well acted. The deveolpement is exceptional as compared to other musicals. You know who both leads are, how they got there, where they want to go, and how they feel on many points. What more could you want?

Music? Can you say "wow"? A great score, puctuated by Dolly Parton's classic "I Will Always Love You", is one of the better musical soundtracks when it comes to portability. The songs are real and can be enjoyed on the stereo, radio, jukebox, or whatever. No movie needed.

Lastly, the words to "Miles to Heaven" are "Where history and AGGIE boys are made." It is misquoted in one of the reviews...

Summary: One of my favorite movies
Review: OK...before you think I'm vapid by picking BLWIT as one of my favorite movies, don't watch it for intriguing plot lines, deep character development, or a message...just watch it for the fun of it! It's a great little movie that takes you away for a little while. The songs are almost all memorable, although the scenes can be a little long (the Sneaking Around scene and the one at the lake) but the dancing is fun, the supporting cast (who couldn't love Charles Durning) is good, and the music will have you tapping your foot. What other movie/musical can use the words pissant and piddley-squattin' in song?

Summary: Ain't nothin' dirty goin' on.
Review: The Best Little Whorehouse had a very bumpy transfer from stage to screen. The show itself was a Broadway success but the show failed miserably in overseas ventures. The main money behind the stage show was Universal Studios so it was only natural that they would bring it to the screen. They attached Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton to the cast, which seemed like a real score but, they also did an awful lot of reworking, enough to make the story lose its cohesion and heart. Most of the songs were cut and Ms Parton and Patrick Williams composed 2 new songs. The film was not well received, with only Charles Durning receiving positive notices.

Much of the fault lies in the new story ideas. Gone were subplots involving the girls at the Chicken ranch, which showed such promise on stage. That was arguably the heart of the show. Even Ed Earl and Miss Mona's personalities were softened as the story suddenly revolved solely around their relationship. They also went overboard to show Reynolds and Parton in a good light.

Many other shows have suffered a similar fate but have faired better by offering up new or expanded dance routines and musical numbers. But, we have no such luck here. The musical numbers are few and far between. A solo song with Burt Reynolds singing was cut making it even that much shorter. So, the film is not one of the best transfers but, like in most cases, it's all we got. Enjoy it the best you can. Ain't nothin' dirty goin' on.

Summary: funny and sexy musical
Review: THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is one of those fun little films that are nothing but harmless fluff. Based on the popular and long-running Off-Broadway musical, the toe-tapping musical tells the tale of back-woods bordello The Chicken Ranch - "where history and randy boys get laid"!!!

The Chicken Ranch is owned by the busty Miss Mona (Dolly Parton); and Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Burt Reynolds) who is in love with Mona sees to it that the bordello is not discovered by the powers that be.

However, television consumer reporter Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) is out to expose and close down this most sacred state treasure.

A very endearing musical comedy which reunited Dolly Parton with her NINE TO FIVE director Colin Higgins. Parton also contributed to the score of the film, which was altered significantly from the stage version.

Summary: Chicago it ain't!
Review: The difference in the media often causes Broadway Musicals to get modified enroute to the Silver Screen.Sometimes they "open" up the settings, sometimes they cut some numbers, sometimes they are miscast with "Hollywood" vs "Broadway" stars, and due to the Academy Awards regulations, at least one "new" (eligible) song get's added to the score.

This one did it all .Along the way they just forgot that the Show was based on a book about real people, with real stories that made up most of the "plot". For some insane reason they by passed Carlin Glynn and Shirley Maclaine and went with Dolly Parton as Miss Mona. While Miss Parton's assets could have been a plus had she been cast as one of the whore's they were a liability in in the role of the down to earth Mona.

Given that, I suspect Ms Parton could have played the part had she been allowed to, but she wasn't. The problem they saw once Dolly had the part was that, Mona's role, although slightly bigger was still a supporting role in an ensemble piece. So, first they threw out the musicals numbers done by most of the other characters. Then they horrified Edna Milton ,the "real" Miss Mona by taking a moment in the Show that annoyed her because it hinted that there was more than just friendship between her and the Sheriff and opening it up as a completely frabricated new plot about their ongoing Love Affair . Sadly the screen chemistry between Burt and Dolly was as sexy as over cooked spagetti.Even after they set Miss Parton the song writer loose padding the role with material that may have belonged in her concert act, but not the film they had to cut most of it.

The resulting film is not as bad as the screen versions of Man of La Mancha or A Little Night Music, but it's still above A Chorus Line on the list of Worst Film Adaptations of Broadway Musicals.

It's best watched on fast foward.
