Review: There are already over hundred reviews available for this movie, and there is nothing left for me to talk about, except that I have watched it over 10 times. However, I would like to add that all those guys who liked Aamir Khan's work in this movies, "must" watch his other movies like "Dil Chahta Hai", "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander", "Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke", and "Sarfarosh". Belive me you wont be disappointed. And you would find yourself to be a new entrant to ever growing Aamir Khan fan club. Have a great time.

Review: Perfection is in the details, and this movie's got it. I haven't liked any movie as much as this for decades, and it's one of the very best that I've ever seen. The acting is superb, and cinematography and direction are excellent, and the music and dancing is wonderful. There IS music and dancing, but don't think it's a musical in the style of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In Lagaan, the music is worked into the action of the movie much more naturally and believably. It's an epic movie: inspiring and uplifting without any resorting to maniipulative cinematic devices or gratuitous sex or violence. Just a fantastic story beautifully told and filmed. Even if you've never seen an Indian movie (and even if you have), you will love this one. The subtitles don't detract from it.

Summary: Once upon a time, in a village far, far away....
Review: Ahh, the Raj..a time of splendor, ease, pastoral and exotic beauty and boundless riches for India at the end of the 19th century. Unless of course you're an Indian - in which case, the Raj meant bleak and endless poverty, starvation and crushing servitude to landowners, Rajahs and the ruling British. In one central Gujarati hamlet, the people await the delayed monsoon season - already straining under the burden of the hated Lagaan. Besides the prolonged drought, the locals must bear the rule of Captain Russel, a bigot who's face alternates between scowls and sneers, but remains consistently arrogant. Russel thinks nothing of the suffering of the Indians or their culture (when the local Rajah begs for tax relief for his citizens, Russel contemptuously dares him to eat meat). Among the downtrodden is Bhuvan, a young man who has no fear of Russel (Bhuvan sneaks onto Russel's hunting grounds and throws rocks at the captain's prey). Never tiring of tormenting the Indians, Russel proposes a devilish wager on his charges: a game of cricket, with three years of tax relief to villagers should they win, but tripling of the Lagaan should they lose to the British. Oh yes - nobody in the village has even seen cricket before. Confident they can learn the game (not very smart about it, but the flick makes the stakes painfully clear) the villagers accept. Actually, it's Bhuvan who accepts to the chagrin of just about everybody, but the beauteous Gauri.In a marathon, 2-day game, British proficiency meets Hindi pluck. Will the town rally and rise above their unfamiliarity with cricket to snare three years of tax-freedom? Or will Russel succeed and reduce the citizens to bleak penury? The end will come off as no surprise, making you wonder why it takes close to 4 hours to reach. However, for fans of Bollywood, Lagaan is a feast to enjoy rather than finish. With its songs and colorful characters - who run the gamut from beautiful to divinely grotesque - the specifics of cricket are never at the forefront. The great game itself is punctuated with enough highs and lows to tax most western viewers - making you wonder why you should care about any turns (if the villagers rack up some runs, the British can make up the difference on their round; or one of the villagers will make a mistake that reverses the gains of the others). The screenplay does a fantastic job mixing a compelling story of desperate villagers with authentic Bollywood (dance numbers aside, Bhuvan and Gauri are just too beautiful to have grown up under the crushing Lagaan; also, the union of the village's Muslim and Hindi population against the hated British seems as poignant as it is ironic) without one compromising the other. If you see one Indian movie in your life - it was probably this one. You just started watching and couldn't turn yourself away.

Summary: Another First-Timer Rewarded!
Review: I've often heard about Bollywood films, but, like some other reviewers here, this was my first go at watching one. I was richly rewarded for taking a chance on this film. Lagaan is a wonderfully engaging, charming film loaded with grand passion and exotic images, yet telling a timeless tale that anyone can relate to: the underdog fighting for not merely victory, but dignity. (It's amazing, too, how the director makes the cricket games so comprehensible and thrilling for someone who was previously clueless about the sport.) Great stuff!

Review: always wins in the end." The message of the movie is universal: don't go away in the final round. You've worked so hard thus far. Believe! WOW, but the amazing thing about the movie is --like all good movies--- you CAN'T BELIEVE... until it goes through! It feels great to watch it. Yes, it's long. I'm not sure how long it is, but I watched it in three parts. Just like a long, good book! Like one of those great classic books! The songs are beautiful!! It's beautiful. Can't we just watch more movies like these? It's gorgeous, don't miss it, my friend.

Summary: One of the best movies I have ever seen
Review: I love this film, I wish it had won the Oscar last year, but oh well,
it's enough that we're all able to buy it and watch it now. It handles everything perfectly - the ballplaying, the songs, the romance, the drama, all in one neat package. And the scenery is great to look at. It's long but not a single minute is wasted. Now I have to track down all the other stuff that the filmmakers have done.
