Summary: Lagaan...definetely a master piece
Review: Since I don't have much time, all I would like to say is that Lagaan is a must see!! Once again, Aamir Khan has done a wonderful job, this time playing the character of Bhuvan, a simple village boy with a lot of guts. Newcomer Gracy Singh, along with British actress Rachell Shelly have both done fantastic jobs for their first Indian films. The movie is set during the time of the British rule in India. It is basically about a village in India, and the lagaan ("tax")which the villagers are forced to pay in the form of crops to the Britishers. Unfortunately, the weather has been terrible and the villagers hardly have enough to get by on a day to day basis; certainly not enough for the lagaan. Bhuvan is challenged by one of the British officers to a game of cricket, and if he wins the lagaan will be pardoned for the next three years. However, if Bhuvan and the villagers do not win, a heavier lagaan must be payed. Bhuvan accepts the challenege, but has no idea how to play cricket! The rest of the movie follows, and of course all is well in the end. As can be seen, the story line is completely different than that of other Indian movies, making it a very enjoyable film. Though it is lengthy, the excellent acting talent, beautiful songs, and wonderful choreography keep the audience completely engaged at all times. If you haven't seen it, see it soon....you'll love it!

Summary: Good Movie
Review: This is a good movie. I like the dances and songs. The story plot is good. I can see this movie over and over again and still bite my nails each time (from suspence). This movie is great. believe me! IT IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER! It is tooooo good to explain. How bout this, in India the cheapest ticket you could find in the six theaters in Bombay playing it (at the same time) was 1200 rupees. There ya go!

Summary: One of the Best Movies I have seen
Review: Lagaan is a movie that will get your adrenaline flowing. Though this movie is about cricket, the suspence is wonderful. Every second is great. You never know what is going to happen. Amir Khan is excellent in playing a poor Indian man leading a providence. The main plot is about a providence that has to pay tax (hence the name Lagaan). The tax is doubled by the raja (king) which is forced to do such by a cruel British Army Leader. When no rain comes, the people of which Bhavan (Amir Khan) is a part of, go to complain. A bet is proposed. It is exciting to see what happens because there are so many choices. Lagaan is a movie that has taken suspence and drama and compiled it into a romance. Lagaan is also very good because it is very practical, there is no fighting, is funny, gives hope, and courage to many people. If you are going to buy a movie that can be enjoyed by anyone, get Lagaan. Also, the movie has excellent songs and dances.

Summary: Incredible!
Review: Close your eyes. Imagine a colorful, entertaining, indian musical comedy that stops you from breathing... for ca. 4 hours!

The plot : Start of century. Poor villagers beg the local English commander to reduce the tax on harvests ("lagaan"), as it hasn't been raining for 2 years, and they can hardly feed themselves.

The commander refuses, but proposes a bet : if indian villagers manage to beat the english colonists at the cricket game, they won't have to pay the tax for the next 3 years. If they lose, they'll pay it three times.

The action leaves room for a love intrigue between the indian hero and a lovely villager, spiced by the unspoken love that the sister of the commander feels for the hero.

No "cheap", laughable, tedious comedy here! but an impressive 'bollywood' production that can stand proudly in front of its public. Don't miss the incredible opportunity to see a GREAT movie, loaded with music, action and heart!

I saw this movie at the Locarno International Film Festival ... in August 2001, where it received the well deserved Price of the Public.

Summary: Once upon a time in India
Review: If there's ever a perfect Hindi movie out there, it has to be Lagaan. From Anil Mehta's beautiful cinematography to AR Rahman's vibrant soundtrack. Lagaan is a tale of struggle during a time when the British ruled India. Aamir Khan as Bhuvan who accepts the challenge from the British through a game, both the British and Indians love, cricket. No, you don't need to know anything about cricket to love this film. Just watch Bollywood at its best.

Summary: Indian Cinema Successfully Targets International Audiences
Review: Set in pre independence India, "Lagaan" captures the British tyranny, the weakness of the Indian Kings and the struggle of the common people very eloquently. The medium used is the game of cricket which reaches out to audiences of all ages. It also builds the excitement in the movie like it does in a live test match.

The story revolves around a British cantontment and an Indian village, the ego of one British officer who imposes double the tax for the year (Lagaan, means tax) because the king refuses to eat meat.

The unfriendly monsoon and the residual effect of the previous tax years angers the villagers and they confront the king and the British officers. The officer throws a challenge to the villagers to defeat the Brits in a game of cricket. If the Indians win, they do not pay taxes for the next three years, and if they loose they pay double the taxes.

Against all opposition one lad from the village in the Runn of Kutch "Bhuvan" (performed adroitly by Aamir Khan) accepts the challenge. He is faced with the task of building a team from a goup of people who are unfamiliar with the game of cricket and psychologically weakend by the British. He has the support of one girl from the village, Radha(charming portrayal by Gracy Singh) and the sister of the British officer, Elizabeth(polished peformance by Rachael Shelly). The story revolves around how he builds the team and concludes with the cricket match.

A.R. Rehman has captured the music making it both timeless and melodious. The festival dance performed by Radha and Bhuvan is a treat to the eyes and the medley rendered by Radha, Elizabeth and Bhuvan is heart rendering.

The movie is technically brilliant, with crisp editing and wonderful period costumes. Ashutosh Gowriker's direction is world class and the subtitles in English are well scripted.

The supporting cast namely the villagers who make up the team,do an excellent job of the character interpretations. The movie subtly depicts the qualities of leadership in the role of Bhuvan. The Indian psyche is captured with aplomb and a degree of realism that has been lacking in the past.

The story is narrated skillfully without coloring the portrayal of the British or the Indian villagers. The pace of the movie is well maintained and there is an element of levity throughout that makes it easy to watch.

India cinema has arrived.
