Summary: Oh boy....
Review: Well, did you notice the hair of Steel Dragon's "leader"? What a joke!! In this movie, it's clear the director, the producers, the actors, everybody involved didn't give a damn about rock and roll or heavy metal. Mark Walhberg is as bad as ever. If the movie was intended to be a parody or comedy, it could have been tolerated. But it is not! It was meant to be "serious", há!, with all that cliches, songs from other bands being credited to Steel Dragon, even Zakk Wylde's participation is terribly dumb...
The movie is so shallow it made me puke. A terrible damage to the already shaken metal credibility in the States...

Summary: Ummmmmm don't think so
Review: Yeesh, just awful. Someone at the movie studio woke up one morning and said " I have an idea, that Ripper Owens story would make a great movie! Let's hire a lead 'actor' who is famous/infamous for being a cheezy disco/rap sissy, Trevor Rabin who has never played metal before in his life to write the soundtrack, hire a writer who admittedly knows nothing about the 80's metal scene..." well, you get the idea. A film that knows it's subject can really be effective at transporting you to a time and place, Dazed and Confused or Almost Famous for example. The whole thing feels real, because the director feels a real affection for the subject. This film is merely a lame soap opera with a very unrealistic 80's metal scene as it's incidental setting. I was in bands in those days, and let me tell ya, this movie is about as authentic as an ebay autograph. It's more than obvious that the filmakers had nothing but contempt for the whole affair, as was evidenced by it's god-awful ending. You know, the part where Marky-mark decides to eschew all the superficial shallowness of the stadium metal scene to become a "relevent. honest alterna-hippie". He is convincing as neither. The nadir of dreadful moviedom. Jennifer looks terrific in black leather miniskirts though.

Review: I can't believe some of the generous reviews below towards this movie... After watching it, it became completely clear to me why Judas Priest did not want to get its name associated with this thing...The movie is a parody, but abad one. Let's see why: 1) WHy on Earth they included RAinbow's LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL and Def Leppard's ROCK ROCK as being STEEL DRAGON's originals, if you had the great Trevor Rabin taking care of the music????...
2)Why always only the singers in STEEL DRAGON get fed up with the rock and roll lifestyle and the other four member don't?
3) Why they chose to portray a POP METAL band, and not a straight ahead metal band like Iron Maiden or Motorhead?? Well, enough. AS with racing driver movies, producers just can't get to know how to sht a movie dealing about rock / metal (exception: ALMOST FAMOUS, that simply blows ROCK STAR apart!...)

Review: wow! this movie was soo awesome.. marky mark and jennifer aniston were great together on the big screen. i really loved the music and was totally impressed that mark actually sang all the songs. this movie was great because the characters went through feelings and thought processes that we all can relate too! deffinently a must-see movie!

Summary: Good movie that wraps up too quickly
Review: Marky Mark plays a smarter Dirk Diggler in Rock Star. He does shine in this movie as the young kid who gets to play out his wildest fantasy - being the frontman of his fave band. Art imitates life in this film as the same thing happened to one lucky soul who worshipped Judas Priest... By the time we see Wahlberg in full rock star glory, the movie is already starting to unravel. Not enough attention is paid to his life as the rock star which would have been very interesting. The end is pretty anticlimactic but overall this film is entertaining. I'm not sure Jennifer Aniston belonged in this movie. It just seemed like a lesser star could have pulled it off better. It just felt like Aniston has trouble not being "Rachel" in this movie.

Summary: Rock Star lacks vibrancy, authenticity
Review: I think you have to appreciate heavy metal music to get off on Rock Star. I like all kinds of music, but I think the common denominator for me is music with soul. Some heavy metal is okay, but most of it sounds angry and cacophonous, rather than soulful and melodic. Still, I suspect many fans of this branch of rock and roll won't be that impressed with the movie. It isn't satirical enough to be another This is Spinal Tap. It's certainly not in the same league as Almost Famous. The story is middle-of-the-road and predictable, which seems to me to be the antithesis of heavy metal folklore. Mark Wahlberg, who, of course, was once a real pop music star called Marky Mark, plays Chris Cole, the lead singer in a tribute band that imitates a wildly popular group called Steel Dragons. His manager / girlfriend is Emily [Jennifer Anniston]. She doesn't much believe in the tribute band, but she does believe in Chris's talents, both on stage and off. When the lead singer of Steel Dragons is fired, the group's leader calls a disbelieving Chris and invites him to audition. Chris and Emily fly from their Pennsylvania hometown to Los Angeles. He gets the job, and they begin their lives in the big time world of sex, drugs and rock and roll. They learn soon enough that this lifestyle makes heavy demands on everything, including their relationship. What can I say about Mark Wahlberg? It's hard to jump from one career to another in show business and get the respect you deserve. Because of the notoriety he got in his pop star days, a lot of people won't admit that he's one of the best actors in movies today. Oddly (or perhaps not), he seems a bit uncomfortable playing a rock and roll icon in this movie, though he's still the main reason to see it. Jennifer Anniston is once again a sort of question mark to me. She seems quite talented in her role in the long running TV comedy series, Friends, but her movie performances have never impressed me. Maybe the right role hasn't come along, or maybe she's lucky to have made it big in TV. Some people have said that Rock Star feels authentic, but I thought it was very stagy. Though the big production numbers, filmed in front of thousands of extras, are professional and obviously expensive, they don't have the edge and electricity one has come to expect in the MTV music video era. There are a few scenes that ring true, like the one in which Chris is so exhausted from being on the road for months that he doesn't even know what city he is in. His and Emily's introduction to the sex and drugs aspect of the business seems fairly accurate. The rest, though, rings false. It plays like every fan magazine's fantasy of life in rock and roll. About halfway through, the movie breaks down. The second half is meant to show how disillusioned Chris becomes with the business. It all gets painfully predictable. The climax is supposed to be ironic yet touching. Instead, it leaves us wondering if maybe Chris's real problem is that he doesn't have what it takes to make it.

Review: As someone who played in bands in LA during the heavy metal era, this movie felt quite familiar. That's probably because they brought in many rockers from that era. For such nostalgic reasons, I enjoyed it. If you weren't there or weren't a fan, you may find it a bit cheesy.

Review: In a lot of ways, this movie was fairly entertaining. I thought the movie was well cast and I enjoyed the "Steel Dragon" tunes very much. The rags to riches storyline was formula, with few surprises. If you've ever had fantasies about what it might be like to live a life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, this is the movie for you. If you're expecting something that will reveal something deep about humanity, watch something else. This movie treats only very lightly the dangers of instant success, creating an unrealistic fairy tale in which even the worst aspects of the high life (orgiastic unprotected drug induced sex, alcohol and drug abuse, the objectification and degradation of women, etc.) are glossed up and made pretty and palatable. So, don't think too hard, pop it in, have fun, and be prepared to hum "Stand Up and Shout" for at least two days.

Summary: Great story and fantastic music
Review: If you liked the music from this time, watch this movie. Other than that, whoever put this DVD together wasn't thinking of the fans. Not much extras. In fact, I've seen the "Making of..." and they didn't even include it on the DVD. The sound quality is terrible! I had to play with my captions turned on just so I could figure out what everyone was saying. Very poor sound editing! Certain scenes the music was so loud you couldn't hear any of the dialoge. Sometimes it was the actors mumbling and bad dubbing.
