Summary: A lot better than I thought
Review: This movie is about the life of an aspiring rock star making it and its effects on his life and the people around him. Mark played a really great role in this movie as the rock star. Jennifer played his girlfriend/manager. One key thing to notice about the movie is his partnership with his hometown band, the new band he joins, and his girlfriend and how much of a fan he is to his favorite rock band which he finds out something similar in his life between being a fan and being a rock star.<might sound confusing but it starts to make sense when you watch it.> be sure to watch the movie after the credits because it has some good outtakes like playing one of Mark Wahlberg's songs while he's about to perform. the dvd does not have a ton of special features but its decent enough. its a movie that i would buy.

Summary: One of my favorites of 2001!!!!
Review: This movie is a must for your collection, especially if you're fan of BIG HAIR ROCK. I grew up with the type of music this film is based on. I thought Mark Wahlberg did an amazing job of capturing the essence of a Heavy Metal frontman. He had the perfect swagger and look. Even if you aren't a huge fan of Metal, I'm sure at one time you've fantasized about being a rock star or some type of entertainer, right? I'm sure you'll be able to relate to the story of a guy who sings for a tribute band of his heroes, eventually getting the call to front the ACTUAL band. Jennifer Aniston and the cast of real life rockers like guitarist Zakk Wylde and Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins are all great too. Oh and by the way... the soundtrack CD is also excellent, with original music from the film's band, Steel Dragon and classics from KISS, Bon Jovi and others. For a fun film ride I enthusiastically recommend ROCK STAR! Enjoy!!!

Summary: Unexpectedly Great!
Review: I remember seeing the preview to this movie at the theaters months before its release. I got goosebumps. The music sounded great, and the content looked good, but when the preview was over, I expected the movie to cater to only a small percentage of the population. I also expected it to suck.When I finally saw Rock Star, I couldn't believe how much I liked it. Yeah, I was a head banger in the 80s, and becoming a rock star was my dream, but this was, by anyone's account, a good movie. It basically has everything: good actors, a great soundtrack, and a plot that will put a smile on anyone's face. One might expect the movie to get "ugly" simply based on the content, but there really was no downside. It was actually quite uplifting. If you like fun movies, consider this movie. If you like 80s rock, this is a must have!

Summary: Everyone was just so cute!
Review: Being a huge hair band fan this movie was my kind of thing. I especially loved seeing Blas Elias of Slaughter in the movie...it made my day. I also have a thing for cute long haired guys (which seems to be hard to find these days) but I got to see them through the whole movie! What luck! Anyways, great movie...true to life and a great ending. =)

Summary: Misconcieved
Review: I love 1980's rock and roll. That said, this was the movie of 2001 that I looked forward to the most. However, I was terribly ashamed to even admit that I watched it. The film just didn't seem to know where it was going or what it was trying to accomplish. For example, in one scene Mark Wahlberg learns that a woman he had a threesome with the night before is actually a man. This is very shocking yes, and I admired this part alot. However, shortly following this scene it begins to explore the good sides of being a rock star with out even really considering what just happened to Mark's character. And the gratuitous scene of the batmobile race is so blisteringly stupid and out of place that I felt like I was at another movie. Any attempt at art through out this film is lost in a fury of ignorance for what rock and roll is truly about.

Review: I loved that movie! Mark is wonderful on it and it was so great to watch him sing again! =o) It's a great movie about having a dream and taking the consequences of it when it comes true!!

Review: For those who love mid 80`s rock you should get this one, great voice and music by Slaugther`s Blas Elias and Ozzy`s Zakk Wilde.
Living at the edge like most famous bands at that time, a must have.

Review: This is a great movie, brings me back to the days of the 80's. when rock was rock, and music was awesome. especially the two chicks in the movie remind me of two old friends of mine.

Summary: What a riot! And... parody should be understood as parody...
Review: Unlike some of the other reviewers, I didn't see this film as a put down of heavy metal. I think we take ourselves too seriously when we can't laugh at something like this, and we have to "read" something into it. In fact, I think the film showed an (albeit offhand) affection for the music. I know I had a good time, and that's what this movie is all about. Especially for anyone who was, or is, a fan of the music... it's not to be missed. Enjoy!

Summary: Not bad -- but not a classic
Review: Anyone who has ever seen the documentary "The Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years" knows that the 80s rock scene was shallow, full of drugs and broken dreams and that many aspiring musicians don't make it. In comparison, "Rock Star" touched on those aspects, but not enough. Based on a fact (this really did happen to the band of Judas Priest) a cover band singer who works as a copier technician tries out for the band Steel Dragon and makes it as their front man. His dream comes true but surprisingly (of course) he realizes that his fantasy isn't necessarily what he dreamed it would be. The overall attitude of the movie pretty much nails the 80s hands-down. Unfortunately, whenever a period piece is done, there are always elements of the current period it is filmed in that are overlooked. Hairstyles, for example, were MUCH bigger from what I remember and always look fried. But, this is a small technicality and I digress. The first half of the movie is good -- and believable for that matter. We see Walburg and Aniston making a concerted effort to hand out flyers for his cover band only to interact with a rival band ripping them down and replacing them with theirs (something that happened frequently in Los Angeles.) We see their relationship with each other deepen as the movie begins to progress, we see them attend concerts, interact everyday life, and we see Walburg try to keep his dream of becoming a star while making a living clash with each other (he ties his hair back while wearing a suit as a Xerox machine technician -- also becoming frustrated with a coworker who notices leftover mascara on him and doesn't understand why he's wearing it.) Of course, this is the first half of the movie. The second half is where it gets unbelievable. We know that Walburg's character makes it as the lead singer of Steel Dragon, but what he goes through is so lightly touched upon, we feel cheated out of what the real story might be. For instance, "Izzy" gets into lots of alcohol, but we only see him out of control for a moment. Realistically, bands then that abused drugs crashed and burned -- and then some. Izzy has a moral conscious -- he hesitates with a number of choices. From messing around with groupies, to going nuts with his paycheck to being denied writing any songs in the band. He actually "thinks" things through and begins to reject his newfound fame. Logically speaking, for a character such as Izzy who has such an obsession with the band, I don't believe tht he would begin to reject it for an isnant. Aniston, who is stuck with a bad script, is too smart for the groupie role that she was given. With the smart-alec responses she comes up with and the way she delivers them, it seems that they took Rachel from "Friends" and jumped back 20 years with her role; she does not expand as an actress in this movie, only reincarnating her role. "Rock Star" is good, but not a classic. It's fun to watch for the 80s nostalgic aspect, but it just isn't realistic. All the serious issues of becoming a star, such as drugs and bankruptcy are really either brushed over or ignored and therefore losing credibility. I don't blame Walburg or Aniston -- they were stuck with a mediocre script, unfortunately, and their characters were too smart for the movie to make a happy, unbelievable ending. Recommended for anyone who wants to relive the 80s and laugh at it.
