Summary: I grew up on this!!
Review: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was the first movie my parents bought when they bought their new vcr. I was only five at the time, and since then, this is one movie I have never gotten tired of. I used to dress up and dance around while watching this movie. When I was little, I liked the dancing and the pretty dresses the women wore. Now that I am older, it's the singing and the story line that gets me to watch it over and over. From the hilarious opening song "Bless You're Beautiful Hide" to the last song "You Will Always be a Bride", you are swept along with the bright colors, the energetic dancing, the beautiful singing, and the wonderful story line. My favorite songs have to be "When You're in Love" and "Goin' Courtin'". I will love this movie for years to come, and will never tire of it.

Summary: A musical for everyone, even people who hate musicals
Review: If the word "Musical" conjures up a treacly mess of overstaged and overdone song and dance numbers that have scant relation to the story line, "Seven Brides" shows what a musical should be. I remember seeing this movie in the theater when I was a child and they had to pry me out of my seat when it was over. "Seven Brides" is set in Oregon Territory around 1850 and brings us Howard Keel (and that gorgeous baritone) as Adam Pontipee, a backwoodsman who comes to town looking for a wife. He sets his eyes on Milly, played by Jane Powell, and it's love at first sight. Back she goes to his homestead, little reckoning that keeping house for his six rowdy, unwashed brothers is part of the package deal. In no time at all she has them out of their moldering longjohns, washed, shaved, presentable, and they're off to the neighborhood barn-raising where they fall in love with six local belles; trouble is, they're already spoken for. It looks like a long, lonely winter ahead (as one of the brothers, comparing himself to a lonesome polecat, sings, "A man can't sleep, when he sleeps with she-e-e-e-eep.") Not to worry; Adam tells his brothers the story of the Sabine women, and they're off to town to fetch the girls. The ensuing kidnap scene is hilarious, and the brothers are married off to their women in a mass shotgun wedding. The songs and the dancing are so well integrated into the story line that they become a part of it. Stanley Donen's direction is excellent, and the six actors who play the brothers dance up a storm and do full justice to Michael Kidd's breathtaking choreography. This movie reminds me of Lay's potato chips; you can't be satisfied seeing it only once.

Summary: A GREAT MUSICAL!
Review: This is one of my two favorite musicals of all time (along with "Calamity Jane" with Keel and Doris Day)! The movie really encaptures life as it was in the early settling of the U.S. The loneliness and harshness of living in such a sparcely populated area where there are 7 men for every 1 woman and the competition of trying to make a life there comes through in this wonderful musical. Going from the quick marriage of Adam and Millie to the other brothers finding wives of their own, the story takes you on a humorous, rompous story that is funny and interesting. The barn raising scene and the wonderful music/dancing that ensues is one of my favorite movie moments of all time. I wish they made movies like this today! It is a great movie to watch on a rainy day and never fails to lift my spirits!

Summary: Excellent singing and dancing!
Review: In this wide screen version, the singing and dancing of the seven brothers and their partners was superb! The story line is a little hickish maybe, but the way in which the plot is carried out is quite good. I would recommend this highly energized movie to all ages.

Summary: Wonderful, wonderful widescreen
Review: Even in decline, its power challenged by TV, MGM studios produced a widescreen winner in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." This lusty 1954 production stars Howard Keel and Jane Powell and features a number of star dancers, including Jacques d'Amboise and young Russ (Rusty) Tamblyn. The story recreates the myth of the rape of the Sabine women, who were kidnapped by the Roman men to take as wives--here, the Pontipee brothers of rural Oregon kidnap their darlins' and spirit them off to a rural paradise one step ahead of the law and ahead of an avalanche that keeps everyone snowbound all winter.

With beautiful production values, bright songs and inspired dancing, this is a winning musical. It must be seen in widescreen to make sense; otherwise it comes across as "four brides for three brothers" too much of the time.

Summary: Get the Widescreen Version
Review: Yes, I agree with all the glowing reviews. Our whole family, including young boys, LOVE this movie. We've watched it many times. However, we bought the regular VHS version, and they lost a lot in the formatting. You frequently hear actors speaking who are not on screen.

So our advice: buy the widescreen so you can see all seven brothers at the same time.

Our family has decided to buy a DVD player just so we can get this film in the DVD version.

Summary: One of the best musicals ever made
Review: Everything about this film is so incredibly top-notch that there is nothing to do but sit back and enjoy it. It is an absolute delight from beginning to end, with great singing, good humor, and some of the best dancing you will ever see. And PLEASE, do NOT cheat yourself by getting anything but a full WIDESCREEN version. Most Highly recommended.

Summary: Great musical
Review: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was recommended to me by a librarian. My grandaughter loved Oklahoma and she said she'd probably like this one too. We both loved it. It took several times through to get to that point, but once it did, I knew we would love it forever. Great movie for those who find the modern world offensive and immoral. Good wholesome fun to watch.

Summary: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Review: This movie is a pleasure to watch. The dancing, the singing, the smirky smiles are all pleasing and warm the heart. Acrobatic Dancing entertains even youths. It's a nice, romantic musical comedy. I would recommend looking for a widescreen version. Once in a while, some of the dancers are off camera.
