Summary: Thoroughly Modern Millie is "terrif!"
Review: Thoroughly Modern Millie is a great musical spoof of the roaring twenties. Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing provide tongue-in-cheek performances that made me laugh until I stopped. The only complaint is that its a wee bit too long, but still great nonetheless. Mrs. Meers, who is Millie (Andrews) and Miss Dorothy's (Moore) house mother is hysterical as the oriental-themed antagonist, with superfluous expressions like, "Ding foo!," and "Shoo-shong! Shoo Shong!" I was a bit baffled as to what the writers were on when they thought of the random side plot of Mrs. Meers white slaving young women to Chinatown. Carol Channing is exellent as ever, with her, "Razzzzberries!!!" Mary Tyler Moore shows us she sure can dance in that broken old elevator and Julie Andrews is good as always (duh). If you're looking for a light-hearted movie that would rival Leslie Nielson flicks, see this one! Its NOT full of applesauce!

Summary: Thoroughly Silly and Entertaining
Review: Thoroughly Modern Millie is a hilarious 1920's type comedy. Its about a young girl in the city who wants to be "modern" and her adventures with her friends Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) and Jimmy (James Fox). It has everything you could ask for in a movie: laughs, music, romance, mystery, and excitement. Although I may be a bit biased, considering I'm the worlds biggest Julie Andrews fan! She does a wonderful job portraying Millie! Very cute, not for the serious type though. What it lacks in plot and substance, it makes up for with humor and well...Julie! A great movie, I definitly recommend it!!

Review: When I was thirteen, this was my favorite movie. I tried to see it every time it came on TV. I was thrilled to find the VHS and the CD here on Amazon, but I sure would like to have it on DVD! Julie Andrews is perfect as a "modern flapper" who has the idea that being the most efficient secretary will get her married to her handsome boss. She and Mary Tyler Moore are hilarious in a movie that makes fun of just about everything!

Summary: One of my favorite films
Review: When I was very young, I saw this movie on television when it was aired very late at night. It was way past my bedtime and had missed the beginning, but I was drawn in by the campiness of this movie and had to watch the whole thing. The next morning I had to go to school (college) and I was remarking to a classmate of mine about this really funny film that was so sixties about the twenties. He made an audible gasp, this was before the phrase "Drama Queen," which he was and still is, and asked me about certain parts of the film. He hadn't seen it in years and told me the title. Well, at that point I had to find this movie on tape, I'm embarrased to say laser disc hadn't been invented yet. I found a used vhs copy and played the thing to death. I recieved the laser disc copy as a birthday gift, the transfer isn't much to brag about but the introduction and intermission had been restored as it is still. I bought the dvd version not too long ago and the picture is cleaner but like a reviwer stated before me, the picture seems a bit grainy, this is due to the dvd's higher resolution. I think this print is as good as it's gonna get, this movie is 35 plus years old now and for it's age, it's not bad. The slapstick, the silent-movie cards placed at Julie Andrews thoughts, my favorite is her complaining about her full fronts ruining the line of her beads, and the overall sixties interpreting the twenties. Look at the makeup and hairstyles of the extras. Mary Tyler Moore as an airhead and virgin is a delightful step out of character and Carol Channing looking like she had a ball. The great Beatrice Lilly and her henchmen Jack Soo and Pat Morita spewing fake Chinese "Oh, Pook!" Opium Dens and fireworks, it's all here beautifully choreographed and scored, fun!!!

Review: Yes, please excuse the cheesy title, but my sisters made me watch this when I was really, really young, and whether its nostalgia or fun music or fun plot points, I love this movie. You can find synopses anywhere online, so I will endeavor just to give an opinion. This film was definitely made to show off Julie Andrews. She has pretty much every single song in the show, and while I would like for the other characters to have more singing opportunity, what we have is terribly fun. The "Tapioca" is a definite highlight as is "Jazz Baby." Everyone will agree that the title song is fantastic, but I think where I may be alone is when I say that my among favorite moments in the show is "Trinkt le Chaim." I admit that it has little purpose other than to show off Julie Andrews's voice (if you know of another reason, please tell me) but the scene is lots of fun nevertheless.The reason I give this DVD a 4-star rating is because there are no special features. I have grown quite accustomed to special features and frequently use them as a way to prioritize movies that are on my wish list. My affection for this movie should be pretty evident in that I purchased the film without any of my beloved special features. The movie alone is definitely worth having. If you like, you can also blame the four stars on the racism. This movie definitely displays none of the sensitivities that we've grown accustomed to over the years. Definitely, if you are offended by things like the treatment of Asians in movies that predate political correctness, then you won't like this movie at all. However, if you can allow yourself to enjoy the film in spite of the Asian treatment, then you should enjoy this film. You should also not expect for philosophical discussions to follow a viewing of this film. Just a contented sigh and lots of joy for whatever activity you plan after this movie.
