Summary: This DVD DOES have the correct aspect ratio.
Review: To "A viewer from San Jose, CA" below:

You are out and out wrong. The Wizard of Oz was originally shot in academic 1.37:1 aspect ratio, which is very close to our current TV aspect ratio. It was NEVER shot in any widescreen formats. What's on the DVD is the same as the movie was shown in 1939. Don't get me wrong. I am an avid supporter of widescreen. But you are just over reacting.

Summary: Aspect Ration Confusion .... DVD
Review: I just had to respond to the San Jose, CA reviewer who commented about the DVD not being in the correct screen ratio. The reviewer was wishing they'd release OZ in "widescreen". Well, in 1939, OZ was not filmed in widescreen. It used a standard screen ratio that looks to us viewers today much like our television screen: SQUARE. In the past they have released OZ in the movie theatres in "widescreen" -- it was simply cropped on the top and bottom to make it look widescreen -- it was not filmed this way.

However, when this version of OZ was released last year in the theatres, several of my friends were amazed that the screen was "square". This is correct. GONE WITH THE WIND plays the same way: square. They're not "widescreen" (i.e. rectangular) movies.

Thanks, just wanted to clear that up.

Summary: The Wizard of Oz is probably on of the best movies ever made
Review: I first saw this film as a little kid and it was love at first sight Now 23 years later I decided to buy it even though I must have seen it more than 40 times. I think the reason I like it so much is that all of the characters are so genuine in their way and above all the movie is timeless and free from any political interferance. I don't think anyone seeing this movie can say it's a bad production nor unethically in any way. I really hope that everyone not yet being able to see this truly magnificent production will get their chanse!

Summary: DVD is Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Review: This is a GREAT DVD. I just got it yesterday and it definately drives home my belief that the DVD format is so much better than regular VHS tapes.

First of all, the menu options for OZ are simply charming. From the main menu, you can choose to go to "Kansas" for movie-watching options, or go to "Oz" for behind the scenes supplimental things. When you choose Kansas, the dust from the tornado blows across your screen and suddenly the menu has changed to sepia-toned Kansas. Hilarious!! The same thing happens with "Oz" -- only instead of dust, it's a magical ruby twirl that takes you to the "Oz" menu. These screens are so clever and magical and set the mood for the movie to come.

Also, my OZ package came with a full-color "How to get the most out of your DVD" brochure which told me which buttons to push to access certain sections. VERY helpful. There is ALSO a "Merry Music of OZ" brochure which covers all of the audio supplements on the disc. So not only do I own the movie, but I have received 18+ rare audio tracks (played on an "Oz Jukebox" on the screen menu -- cool!)

As for the movie itself, it looks crisp and well-preserved. The colors are magnificent. My favorite line, which cracks me up every time, is when the Wicked Witch vanishes from Munchkin Land in a flash of smoke and flames. Glenda (the good witch) waves the air with her hand and says, "Oh! What a smell of sulphur!" HILARIOUS!

Well, I highly recommend this DVD. What a great way to revisit a classic movie like OZ in a new and exciting way. The supplementary stuff on this DVD is really fascinating. My one complaint (and maybe I simply haven't found it on the disc yet...) is that there is no "studio" version of the cut song "The Jitterbug" with Garland's vocal. They only seem to include a rehearsal version with another woman standing in on Garland's part. Small complaint. Great disc.

Summary: I Love This Flick, But...
Review: I'm giving the DVD release three stars simply because they refuse to put the film out with an aspect ratio that matches the original release. All the other bells and whistles are great, but this omission is glaring in the studio's consistent refusal to take advantage of the technology that is out there. There is absolutely no reason to release this movie without the widescreen, and less reason to buy it, all the pretty packaging notwithstanding.

Summary: A true classic that can be watched over and over again!
Review: As a child, the tornado, witches, and falling house were somewhat frightening for me. Perhaps it may not be appropriate for very young viewers. However, as I got older, I learned to appreciate the values shared in this film. Now, it's a favorite of my own kids. An extra benefit, they are learning important life lessons and enjoying themselves all at the same time!

Summary: "Wizard of Oz" is a Masterpeice
Review: Young Dorthy is tired of her ordinary life in her ordinary town and is suddenly wisked away to Oz, a dream land full of color and beauty. Masterfully done job on everyone's part as the wonderful movie unfolds. It is so much fun, it's no wonder it is still around. It has survived many movies of the same time, as well as countlessly bad sequels and spin-offs, which is no surprise at all. Great cast in a great movie proves that being over the raindow is timeless.

Summary: Greatest Family Movie EVER Made!!!
Review: Although this movie is aired every year, the opportunity to own it is priceless. If you have children or grandchildren, it just makes it more valuable. It teaches people to be kind and to respect one another and to respect the people we love. It teaches us the importance of home, family, dreams, imagination and to strive for what we want. This movie is magnificent. A MUST for any video library.
