Summary: Picture quality is excellent
Review: The movie is a classic, and the only comment I'm making here is that of the 40 or more DVD's that we own, this one has the best picture quality of all. And, it is done in the 3:4 normal tv aspect ratio, which we appreciate (don't care for the letterbox format used in many other DVD products we've purchased, such as South Pacific).

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: It's not a widescreen production.
Review: The reviewers worrying about the aspect ratio of "Singin in the Rain" should check their facts. The film was made in 1:1.37 according to the Internet Movie Database. It isn't a widescreen production.

Summary: Singin' with praise
Review: This is truly the greatest film, not just musical, of all time. With flawless performances by Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, and the most hilarious role played brilliantly by Jean Hagen, this is a great film. Also Cyd Charisse is exquisite in the dance sequences and there is also an early performance of Rita Moreno as Zelda, Queen of the Flappers. It's hard to believe the title song was filmed in one shot. The reason this filmed did not do so well at the Oscars was An American in Paris, which I don't recommend*, won several awards including best picture of the year before. Also the movie went up against The Greatest Show on Earth, which won best picture. However, both Jean Hagen and Donald O'Connor won Golden Globes. It just goes to show you awards aren't everything but this movie is.

Summary: Classic classic and classic
Review: This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I just watched it again the other day, and I realized that no matter how many times I watch Singin' in the Rain, I'll NEVER get tired of it! My absolute favorite character is Lina Lamont. She is totally hillarious and keeps me laughing even after the movie's over. This gets me a lot of strange looks, but I don't care. I love this movie. Donald O'Connor is also brilliant. Every classic comedy routine worth doing, he does in his hillarious numbers and conversations with Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly). Before I saw this, I thought that Hollywood didn't have a sense of humor before the 1970's or 80's. I know now that Singin in the Rain is one of the top comedies ever made; in the present or the past.

Summary: The Best film ever made
Review: The year : 1952. The film : Singin'in the rain! The Best film ever made, ever, and which will never be upstaged. The premise is quite simple, lots of songs, lots of dancing, lots of movie stuff too. And what great fun it is! It is just about the transition between silent and talking pictures, which occured in 1927. What's good about it is that it can be funny and witty at the same time, without any of the audience member realizing it. And any film who can do this, deserves to be called the greatest film of all-time. Take the scenes where they are shooting scenes from the film Gene kelly and Jean Hagen star in : It just cracks you up the way the microphone is placed so we hear her heartbeat or her dress, but if you think about it, it is more serious than entended to be. But this doesn't really matter anyway because it is just fun, wonderful, magical fun. Sparks, chills are created whenever a musical number starts. The whole movie just lifts you up with its bright colors and it's dleightful songs. It is absolutly enchanting. And what greater movie moment than the "Singin' in the rain" number. Nothing has ever come close to this and never will be. What this movie provides us with is a smile at the end, that warms up your heart for the rest of your life. Now, what other film can do this?

Summary: Dissapointing DVD
Review: A great film. But the DVD left me wanting. Though the picture looks crisp and bright, this DVD is the only one I've encountered with NO subwoofer channel output...nothing. It's advertised as being in 5.1, but lack base frequency.

I must also complain about the lack of an accompanying commentary -- especially since the laserdisk version contained one of the best commentaries I've ever heard; by the late film historian Ronald Haver. Such a shame this DVD seems to have been slapped together. Is this the way to treat the greatest musical ever made?

Summary: Singin in the Rain RULES
Review: This was the second Gene Kelly film I ever saw, and it has remained my favorite. I never realized what a great actor/dancer/singer Donald O'Conner was, either! (He literaly runs up walls on "Make 'Em Laugh", a hilarious song using every classic comedy routine ever) "Moses Supposes" is one of the films best numbers (the choreography on it is exceptional, not to mention funny), along with "Good Morning" and, of course, "Singin' in the Rain" (Kelly's voice on this is one of the best I've ever heard.) Another great one, although having nothing to actually do with the plot of the movie besides the fact that it's in the movie within the movie - you get what I mean - is "The Broadway Melody". The music, the dancing, the acting... I can't stress how wonderful this movie is. If you love Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, or if you just apreciate song and dance, you must see this movie.

Summary: There are no words...
Review: I absolutly adore this film. It's most definetly one of my favorite musicals. It really is close to perfect. The musical numbers are woven seamlessly into the story line. And the numbers themselves are knock-outs. Although the title dance scene is not my favorite, every time I watch it it fills my with that MGM feeling. But my favorite is without a doubt "Moses Supposes". If you want to see Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor at their best, search no more! Your jaw will drop to the flore while watching these guys give it all they've got. Real hoofers, those two. Of course, Debbie Reynolds is adorable. Not that bad a dancer either. Isn't she great in "Good Morning". Oh my, what can I say about Jean Hagen...WOW. Now that, my friends, is a performance! She's HILARIOUS! I would never ever imagine anyone else in that role but her. Jean Hagen was born to play Lina Lamont just as Vivien Leigh was born to play Scarlett O'Hara. She's fabulous. All I have to say is... Thats Entertainment! Don't wait another second, go buy it!

Summary: Literally "timeless"
Review: This movie bridges the beginning of cinema and its present: no movie had ever unmasked Hollywood's rites and reality without seeming acerbic and downright nasty (as "Sunset Boulevard" had been)... yet "Singin' In the Rain" is sweet and nurturing in its critique of Hollywood. The hand here doesn't strike at Hollywood: it strokes it. And for those whose conception of musicals is ill-informed, thinking them all quaint and harmless, there is plenty of spice here: the dance routines suggest the influence they duly exert on current urban dance, and the comedy is hysterically funny and surprisingly layered and sophisticated. This movie is often called "the musical for people who don't like musicals", or the "anti-musical"... but some of the "musical inside the musical" storylines make up the best of the genre (see "The Bandwagon"). Just don't think of it as a "musical", think of it as a great movie which beats anything at the CentroPlex.

Summary: # 1 musical ! :)
Review: If your a lover of old-time classic musicals, you most likely already own this one, if you dont, you should ! I am not a huge fan of flicks that feature mostly dancing and song . . but this includes so many great laughs along with it . . The movie tells the tale of the making of the first talking movies . . Unfortunately the current leading lady in movies, who LOOKS good on screen, has an awful voice, what can be done to keep up with the latest in movies, and yet keep her image . .. You'll want to get this family movie to find out !
