Summary: Essential to anyone who read Annie Proulx's Accordion Crimes
Review: Like Annie Proulx's "Accordion Crimes," "Red Violin" tells the story of all who come into contact with this charmed musical instrument. I was intrigued by the triple reference points that tied the histories of dissimilar peoples together: the tarot reading, the changing points-of-view of Samuel L. Jackson's entrance into the auction that introduced the relatives of the people affected by the red violin and the instrument itself. Above all, the passion and beauty of the music created is a treasure.

Review: All you Shawshank fans will really appreciate this literate, inventive narative. Artfully constructed and beautifully photographed. The best thing I have seen from 1999.

Summary: Five stars and two questions
Review: One of the best movies ever, and all I know about music could fill one side of a 3x5 card. But two questions: 1. Was this somewhat of a knock off of the book "Accordion Crimes"? 2. DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED BY THE ENDING: why did Morritz have to take the thing? And didn't the cost of the copy show up on his expense report? If so why didn't Duval want to keep the copy?

Anyway, each of the foreign language sections was astonishing.

Summary: Beautiful but Boreing.
Review: I had trouble getting through this one. By the time the story had moved to China I felt lost and bewildered. This film is extremely hard to follow and quite boreing. I originally rented this because Samuel L. Jackson was in it. He had a small part and seemed to be the most interesting character in the whole film.

I did however enjoy the music and the scenery, it was quite beautiful.

Summary: awesome
Review: this is an excellent movie. as others have stated in their reviews, the music and the story go hand in hand. the ending was the best, i would have been disappointed if it had gone any other way.

Summary: Perfect!
Review: Beautifully filmed, the story unfolds both sensuously and gracefully. "The Red Violin" is about the travels (and adventures) of the beautiful "Red Violin" from 17th century Italy (when it was created by the master violin maker, Nicolo Bussotti) right up to present day Montreal when it ends up on the auction block as a very valuable piece of antique.

My favourite moments of the movie involves Nicolo Bussoti ie. how he lovingly creates the perfect Red Violin as a gift for his beloved wife and unborn child (both of whom later die during childbirth). Nearing the end of the movie, there is a flashback which shows Nicolo, griefed by the death of his loved ones, preserving the memory (and spirit?) of his dead wife onto the Red Violin. How he does it seems quite macabre to me, although some viewers may find it romantic.

It is also very interesting and suspenseful to see who finally "gets" the famous violin in the end, when it's being auctioned off by the Duval House.

This movie is perfect in every way, with breathtaking cinematography and you get to "experience" the many different cultures of the world spanning over 300 years, from Italy in the 17th century to Vienna, 19th century England and China during the heights of the Cultural Revolution (when Western arts, music and influences were among the items banned).

The cast is international and the dialogue is appropriately done in various languages in accordance to the particular culture and time. The acting is First-Rate.

Watching this movie has been an enriching experience for me. It is truly a feast for the senses, not only for the eyes but the ears as well (thanks to the beautiful performed score).

Highly recommended!

Summary: A masterpiece like no other. . .
Review: A beautiful, passionate film, The Red Violin was one of the most unique, creative cinematic masterpieces I've ever seen. It chronicles the journey of the special Red Violin as it is passed down from owner to owner through the decades, and is presented in 5 different languages. I thought the use of the foreign languages added a lot to the story; it was much more effective than dubbing or simply having all the actors speak English. The ending was quite surprising, when the secret of the violin's perfection was revealed. The music, played by Joshua Bell, was beautiful too. On the whole, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It speaks to me as a violinist and I'm sure would have a profound impact on a variety of people.
