Summary: Bravissima, Dame Joan, we love you
Review: All I have to say is that Dame Joan IS opera. Her empty spot in the operatic world is much missed by her legion of devoted fans. As for me, I have been a fan of her's for over 30 years.
This farewell party is tremedous. It's so wonderful and joyous and uplifting. A true stupendous ovation to the greatest singer of our time.
Goodbye Dame Joan. But luckily for us, we still have all your wonderful recordings.
Every fan of Sutherland must have this DVD for it's nostalgia and the last look at our favorite soprano.
The Fledermous performance is first rate also.

Review: Although most of the reviewers refer to Joan Sutherland farewell party and her guests,I I bought this DVD for Die Fledermaus performance.Actually I usually skip over the Joan Sutherland farewell party when I watch this DVD.
This is a very good and enjoyable production of the Fledermaus.
The singing is in English and there are also subtitles in English.
Good music,a lot of fun,good singers.

Summary: Sutherland most loved of all Prima Donnas
Review: Callas may be the most famous because of her lifestyle. But Dame Joan is the most beloved. Her legions of fans will NEVER desert her. As you can see, she has the highest postive feedback of all DVD releases.
She is very well sold in Britain. 10-1 to callas, so her sales here is very good, far better than so Callas. But in the UK, she is as worshipped as the Beatles. We Aussies and Brits will not tolerate insults at our Joan. You can generate over 1,000 positive or negative votes and reviews against anyone if more nasty insults are directed against her.
We love Callas, but she doesn't do kind stuff to commoners like Dame Joan. She only cares about her fame and money. Dame Joan cares about the human being. Back in the early 60's, she's the only diva who is totally against racists. She refused to stay in a hotel that discriminated against Leontyne Price. Callas should care less. So she has a voice and gold and a heart of gold, and us Brits love her with all our hearts. So bash her, and you bash an entire nation! Beware!!!

Summary: Clumsy and awkward
Review: For a musical play like Die Fledermaus actors who sing are very much to be prefered to singers who try to act! Besides, filmed theater has very serious limitations.
My ideal Fledermaus is the magnificent movie made in Color in Vienna just before the end of WWII. The soundtrack was lost but after the end of the war the cast was reassembled and the soundtrack was recorded anew. I saw the movie several times in Zürich in about 1948. I would dearly love to see it again. None of the performances I have seen since can compare.
The treatment of an opera as a movie was in 1951 used by William Powell and Emeric Pressburger in their great Tales of Hoffmann. Perhaps they had seen Fledermaus?

Summary: How dare you insult a great prima donna in her retirement
Review: From now on. The Australian audience will cease to purchase or promote any of Callas's recordings. This is due to numerous utmost insult to our great diva, Dame Joan. We are insulted to the highest degree. Unless a apology is issued. We will use our buying power to boycott this mean act by Callas fans.
Appologize, we are upset and will not take it!
Take a look at the 100's of rediculous insults at our Country's heroine and idol and you will see why. Callas is Sutherland's friend. Why does her immature fans attack her, jealousy, perhaps?

Summary: Pettyness is unforgivable at anytime
Review: I actually purchased the Laser Disc of this the same year of the performance, and will now order the DVD, it is a stunning production, if you think Dame Sutherland doesn't sound just fine, perhaps you should invest in a better audio system, if that fails try a hearing aid, the idea of insulting one artest just because you prefer another, speaks volumes about YOU and no one else.

Summary: I LOVE this, but....
Review: I have to say that this is an absolutely marvelous performance of Fledermaus. It's extremely funny, it's in English (yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and everyone in the cast sings superbly (wow, I love the countertenor). The acting is excellent too, and not artificial and forced (nothing is worse than canny, forced comedy), like other Fledermaus performances I've seen. BUT... there's always that "but"...Sutherland's appearance ruined this beautiful performance. I don't care if it's a farewell to her; she comes walking in and delivers poor, poor performances (not to mention completely breaking the flow of the Fledermaus performance as a whole). Sutherland's voice is a huge mess and unbearable to hear. This is NOT what I want to hear from a farewell from Sutherland. Bad memories! Pavarotti is okay, and Horne as always is excellent. This really would've been a 5-star DVD, but the one who inspired it ruined it!

Review: I truly admire this performance! It is in English, and it is really funny. Luciano and Horne did wonderfully, and Joanny (my nickname for her) is wonderful, esp in the La Traviata duet. Overall, a great farewell performance. Enjoy!!
