Summary: Outstanding!
Review: The producers of this film have done a wonderful job of taking a Broadway play, and converting it to the cinema! My only complaint is that it is not listed on the list of DTS DVD's at Amazon! The DTS encoding was pure genius! I hope that this DVD lasts long enough for my children to watch it. I can't wait to watch it again! Go Go GO Joseph!

Summary: Put some pep into history!
Review: We all know the story of Joseph and his brothers who lived long ago. Many have probably heard it several times -- but never in the manner that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice have magnificently created. The songs are all great - and believe me, after watching this you'll be singing them for days. The richly animated cast presents the story humorously. Donny Osmond does a knock out job as Joseph, pulling emotions left and right. The costumes and sets are of fantastic craftsmanship. Watching this is a great way to have your history and enjoy it too!

Summary: Well worth it!
Review: I saw this video during a public TV pledge drive. It struck me as an overly produced, overly fun story with catchy music. I had to have it! Donny Osmond and the rest of the cast clearly had a blast doing this work and it shows. You will watch this tape over and over. I have!

Summary: Entertainment galore!
Review: I loved this film! It is entertaining on so many levels that I have enjoyed watching it many times.

Although I did not have an opportunity to see this on stage and I would now jump at the opportunity to do so as long as Donny Osmond was playing Joseph. I think he does an excellent job conveying the happy go lucky Joseph before his brothers attempt to seal his fate. While I wasn't a Donny fan before but I do remember the Puppy Love stage, I am now - he is a blend of fun naivite' and sexy power broker in Pharoah's government. My daughter's think his is really a hottie - the second generation of Donny fans. I bought this tape right after I had rented it because it is so very much fun to watch and all comparisons to the stage production are ill conceived. You will be slighting yourself if you don't immediately buy this tape - buy it because after you rent it, you will want to own it. This movie is great family entertainment and I can honestly say that many movies being produced recently are not. Treat yourself - you deserve it.

Summary: over-produced, but fun
Review: It is pretty rare that Broadway shows get released on home video ("Cats" and "Victor/Victoria" come to mind), so rejoice in the video and DVD release of this jubilant show. I saw this on Broadway in 1982 with Andy Gibb's understudy in the lead, and it was a wonderful, fun time. This DVD version is a somewhat more visually elaborate version of the glitz-and-glam revival from a few years back, and sometimes it feels a bit too glitzy and glammy. But the performances are top-notch, and thanks to camera close-ups you can clearly see how much the cast members are enjoying themselves and having fun. Good for all ages, despite some semi-provacative clothing the dancers wear. Catchy songs, lively performances, often witty lyrics. However, viewers won't get the sense of spontaneity that comes with live perfornance. This is more of a long-form music video than a filmed stage show, and we are the less fortunate for it. This show is, by origin, a theater piece. To not get that "live in one-take" energy is a shame. But the show is still fun to watch on TV.

Summary: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
Review: Joseph is an excellent movie!I've watched it 1000000000000 times and I love it! It's about Joseph(Donny Osmond)who is adored by his father the most out of his other 11 brothers. Jacob(Richard Attenborough) buys Joseph a multi coloured coat which makes his brothers jealous. The brothers plan to get rid of Joseph. They put him in a well but then change their minds when some Ishmaelites buy JOseph instead. Joseph is then bought by Potiphar, one of Egypt's millionaires and ownes Joseph as a slave. Potiphar's wife tries to seduce Joseph but gets caught by Potiphar. Potiphar gets angry then throws Joseph in jail. After that, two of Pharoah's men are put in jail. Those two men had dreams they didn't understand so they told them to Joseph and he interpreted them. The butler's dream meant that he would be released but the baker would not. When the butler is free he tells Pharoah that he knows this guy in jail who can tell you what your dreams mean because Pharoah had a dream he did not understand. Joseph comes and tells Pharoah what his dream means. It means ther will be lots of food for 7 years but after that there will be 7 years of famine. Joseph tells Pharoah that he needs to find a man to lead him through the famine. That man is Joseph. During the years of the famine the brothers forget that they sold Joseph and now think he is dead, but he isn't. They hear that Egypt has a lot of food so they go to Egypt not knowing that Joseph was the leader of the food. They asked for food and so they got food. When they were eating Joseph put his golden cup in Benjamin's sack because Joseph wanted to know if his brothers were now honest men. It turned out that, yes, they are. Joseph renited them at last. Jacob came to Egypt and that is the ending. It's a reallllllllly good movie

Summary: not really Widescreen
Review: I was about to return it at first thinking I didn't really get the widescreen version. Then I found out that this is 1:1.55 widescreen... meaning there are no bars at the top and bottom since 1:1.55 is the size of a normal television. So yes, it is widescreen in that it wasn't made wide and shortened, but it's not widescreen in that there is not and never was anything wide about it.

Summary: Excellent introduction to musicals for children
Review: Last weekend I rented this DVD from our local library. My children ( 3 1/2 and 1 1/2) and I enjoyed it so much that we just had to buy it ; from Amazon of course :-). We watched it both days and each time it ended they wanted to see it again. Although a lot of the plot went over their heads there are a few items that need explaining to small children. Especially, the part where Joseph is sold as a slave and the brothers smear goat blood (they use a stuffed animal not a real goat)over his "dreamcoat" and the scene with Potipher's wife (rather risque). However, I found that by making sure that I watched the production with my kids and singing along to the songs with them more than made up for these minor glitches.

In closing, this is a must see for any family that loves music and an excellent introduction to musical theater.

PS. the DTS track is a nice plus

Summary: Pretty good effort!
Review: As someone who was in a production of Joseph as a kid, I really enjoyed this. It was an interesting premise to switch it from something the kids did, to having the teachers act out the parts. And if I take things right, a musical for children was the original intention for this work.

I've never seen Joseph by a professional company, so I can't really comment on this. But I felt overall, the cast worked well together, and that, while others feel like it didn't match up to live stage performances, perhaps a direct comparison is not totally fair. Judged on its merits, its an enjoyable show, with an intriguing mix of musical styles and good set design. I particularly had fun with the Pharoah character, and Richard Attenborough leant a great dignity (with a hit of comedy) to his role too. The narrator adds a lot to the character of the work. Overall, I'm pretty impressed, though I agree, the sound quality leaves a bit to be desired.

Summary: Very Enjoyable
Review: I keep humming the tunes, and most important, my 5 year old grand-daughter does too. I'd say we have reviewed it 20 times.
