Summary: A great DVD for a great tour
Review: I live in Detroit and was in the front row for the Peppers show on the Californication tour. Very good show. This DVD is the entire concert that we all saw. Same set list and everything. The band sounds excellent on this DVD. Heck, even John sounds good here (lets face it folks, he isnt a great guitar player). Chad (A Detroit native, whom I met at the show) is an excellent drummer. Well, Anthony (also from Detroit) and Flea sound excellent as well.

My only complaint? The bonus songs should have been edited into the main concert footage. To hear these great rare live tracks you have to go into the special features. It would have been nice to see a "mega set list" with EVERY song on it back-to-back.

Summary: this DVD will blow you... right off tha map!!!
Review: i play bass guitar in a local rock band, and i had all my bandmates over one night to sit and watch this disc. none of them are huge RHCP fans, but you should've seen their jaws drop to the floor when this show started! flea yells, "we are the red hot chili peppers and we rock tha ... house!", a statement that the band proceeds to back up time and time again with every performance on the dvd. i cannot say enough about this band, and about this disc. it sounds incredible, looks incredible, and barely contains its subject. people have nit-picked about the editing, or about how the sound is synched with the picture, but i didn't notice. i was totally absorbed in watching the best band in the planet rock out!!! it gave me chills, this concert is so good. i hope the chili peppers live to be 100.

Summary: Sensational!!!
Review: I saw this tour live and this DVD is better than being there. The 5.1 surround sound is awesome. Turn down the lights, turn up the sound, and sit back. It's like being in the front row. Buy this and you can go to a Chili Peppers show every night in your living room. Of course the DVD has been edited and there are seens from different nights that are spliced together so you will see Flea playing a blue bass and then a silver bass a second later... and Anthony's mohawk does vary from scene to scene as well but that shouldn't bother you if you are out to see an amazing performance.

Bottom line is that this DVD [is great]. Before this came out Shrek was my 2 year old's favorite movie on DVD. Now it's this!

Summary: Great DVD
Review: i thought this dvd was awesome, with a couple flaws. the set is very good, everything desired with all their classics and a lot of great, less popular songs. amazing improvising mixed in with the sheer talent of this band makes the entire set an awe-inspiring musical hurricane. the only two major problems i saw with it were:
people have mentioned this before, the centering of flea and anthony. sure, i love them, and flea is amazing, but so are john and chad. chad and john do great fills and licks that do not get shown on camera, which sometimes gets frustrating. not the biggest deal in the world, but slightly annoying
secondly, i'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but the dvd is a mix of multiple concerts! notice how anthony's mohawk is drooped over one second and then standing upright the next? or how john's guitar changes from his strat to his telecaster during bloodsugarsexmagik? it doesn't affect the songs themselves, but it just makes it feel less genuine and real.

over all though, this dvd is great. i watch it all the time, it's a great song to play or sing along to. buy this dvd if you like the chili peppers...pretty much simple as that.

Summary: My favorite DVD ever!
Review: I totally love this DVD! It has the neatest concert and backstage footage. It's very entertaining. In the backstage footage it shows the band getting ready to go onstage and the very moment they walk out onstage which I think is pretty cool. So if you are a fan of the red hot chili peppers than I think this DVD is the perfect DVD for you.

Summary: Great concert DVD!!!
Review: I was lucky enough to catch the second leg of this tour (with Stone Temple Pilots) late last year, when it came to L.A. This DVD is almost like being there all over again! The Chili Peppers are a great live band and this disc does a great job of capturing the energy of their live show! While they do play a few songs that I wasn't too familiar with, it's still a great concert. Some of my favorite tracks on the disc are: "Around the World", their cover of Hendrix's "Fire", "Suck My Kiss", "Easily", "Give It Away" and a few others.
The only reason I didn't give this DVD 5 stars is because of the lack of special features that the disc offers. While the interviews with the band, and the pre-concert stuff are alright, the "Additional Live Footage", could have been part of the featured concert. How about a commentary track from the band looking back at the concert, or multiple angles? I don't mean to pick on the RHCP, but I wish more bands would take advantage of what DVD's are capable of (for example, Metallica's awesome "Cunning Stunts" and "S&M" DVD's or the recently released U2 "Elevation 2001 from Boston" DVD).
Be sure to check out the closing track ("Me and My Friends") for a cool practical joke played on drummer Chad Smith by tourmates, The Foo Fighters.
Overall, a pretty decent disc, with a great performance by a great live act!!! A must for fans!!

Summary: Frusciante IS back!
Review: I wasn't sure what to expect from a RHCP's live performance with John Frusciante back in the lineup. By far my favorite guitar player they've had, I didn't know if he could still play after his drug abuse problems in the years away from the band. Their "Californication" did little to alleviate those fears, his playing and soloing being so sparse and sort of un-practiced sounding. Don't get me wrong. "Californication" is a great album but it's much different from the chops galore "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". (And I don't mean that as a slam-BSSM is a masterwork in no small part due to Frusciante's intricate, interweaving lines throughout).

"Off the Map" put all my doubts to bed. Frusciante plays his [behind] off. Just check out "If You Have to Ask". Shredding, but he's so much more than than just a shredder. Something magical happens when his Strat, through a Wah, hits a Marshall. It's the tone for sure and then his note selection and use of space that really sets him apart from "shredders". I had read recently in a guitar magazine interview that he's trying to change his style, henceforth the new, sparse approach he's used on the last two albums. It's pretty funny to watch actually. When they play the new songs his playing shifts dramatically to the new style he's developing.

And don't let me forget Chad Smith and Flea. They are powerhouses here. Flea's gone from slapmaster (oh, he can still slap!) to improvisor and it suits him well. Chad is like a rock holding John and Flea's improvisations together.

This is a fun and inspiring dvd. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star review is because it does falter here and there. But that's what you get when your live show isn't prerecorded canned [stuff] and you take musical risks. That where the fun happens with these guys.

Summary: Chili Freak
Review: I've been on board the Chili bus for 15 years, and the band keeps getting better and the music and songwriting keeps getting more sophisticated. This DVD is an excellent representation of a live Peppers show. I'm almost 40, but younger friends and my 4 year old and 2 1/2 year old dig it too.
The band has evolved into one of the tighest, jammingest and most original bands in rock history. A must for the die hard Pepper fan all the way to new fans just learning about the band.

Summary: Off the Map
Review: if you've never been to a rhcp concert(like me!) then this is a great way to see what you've been missing. even if you have, this dvd is still great!as well as covers like "fire" and "subterranean homesick blues" it features their most successful songs, like under the bridge, give it away, blood sugar sex magik, scar tissue, just to name a few. rhcp is a great live band with some wild on stage tactics and i found myself singing along with this dvd.(and staring at their beautiful bodies..:) it also has pre stage footage and interviews with them which is interesting as well. 5 stars!
