Summary: One of the Greats!
Review: Fats Domino in concert! Good to have another of the greats on DVD!

This concert may have been recorded in 1986, but I don't think the DVD says where it took place. However, I'll bet it is similar to thousands of concerts Fats Domino has given, with his large band of tried and true associates.

The concert is competently filmed and recorded, with a good selection of the hits and standards. There is a small paper insert with a few notes about Fat's career. We could have wished for more songs (the disk is only 45 minutes), and there are several places where the cuts to the next song are noticeably abrupt. Highlights of the disk include Fats verging on a medley in several places, where we get a nice taste of a song or two that is not listed on the contents (Since I met you baby); and some great saxophone solos. "Blueberry Hill" was just reassured a place in history when Fat's version was declared to be number 18 on a list of the top songs of the 20th century by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America.

The value of having such a concert on DVD makes it a worthwhile investment for fans of mid 20th century pop and rock music, and it is easy to overlook the defects in a modest K-tel DVD, at a modest price. And now that we have Fats on DVD, can we hope that the Chuck Berry and Everly Brother's concerts, also filmed in the mid-1980's, will make DVD soon?

Review: This is an absolutely wonderful Fats Domino concert!! So emotionally involved does one become as Fats sings one great hit after another, that it somes close to being at a live performance.

Review: Wow, I liked the DVD. But I was a little surprised that I ended up thinking that Fats wrote the song. He does a sharp job of interpretation, no doubt, and I don't want to take anything away. But as a music teacher, I surfed through a "Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino" which presents lyrics along with guitar chords. Just for the record, "Blueberry Hill" was written in 1940 by pop song writer and band leader Vincent Rose for a movie called "The Singing Hill." Surprise!! Are you sitting down? It is apparently a western. Blueberry Hill was apparently written for Gene Autrey. ASCAP awarded Vincent Rose al posthumous award for the most performed song from a movie. Sure it made Fats career, and we applaud him. But there wouldn;t have been any blueberries if it were not for Vincent Rose, who earlier teamed up with Al Jolson to write "Avalon". Give credit where credit is due!
