Summary: Worth the money...extended version of VH1 special.
Review: I've been a fan of Megadeth since the 80's. So when VH1 aired an episode of "Behind The Music" devoted to Megadeth, I watched and even recorded it. I knew that the show was released commercially by the band on dvd, but initially didn't see any point in buying it because I'd taped it off of VH1. However I found out later that the dvd features an extended version of the show, and has some extra stuff, so I decided to buy the dvd. I'm really glad I did! First of all, the "Behind the Music" episode has a lot of footage that must've got cut to fit the show into VH1's time requirements. The extra footage is really good and gives a lot more background about the band. Also included as a bonus feature on the dvd is some extra interview footage with various people. You also get the "Moto Psycho" music video too. I also really liked the layout of the dvd menus. Very nicely done, with a different Megadeth song playing at each menu. If you're even hesitating about buying this, DON'T! If you're a Megadeth fan at all, you won't be dissapointed.

Review: I've seen them live and the BTM DVD is something I've already watched time and time again. The World Does Need a Hero and Dave Mustaine is that hero to more people than anyone cares to believe. It is the BEST BTM series ever done and now I can watch it anytime I care to. THANKS GUYS, CLASSIC STUFF!!!!!

Summary: An interesting look at Megadeth
Review: If you're a Megadeth fan, you'll love this DVD: that's the bottom line. A lot of it won't be new to you, but there were a few things in it that I hadn't known, and it's interesting to hear all the stories from the people who've been with and around the band throughout it's history.

On the downside, there are some inaccuracies. For example, it says that Megadeth's "Countdown to Extinction" debuted at number 2, but that Metallica's self-titled album came out afterwards and debuted at number 1. But actually, "Countdown to Extinction" came out A YEAR AFTER Metallica's self-titled album (Metallica's album came out in the summer of 1991; "Countdown" came out in the summer of 1992).

A good look at the band, but unfortunately, the happy ending they close with didn't last. Mustaine suffered an injury and ended Megadeth's run about 6 months or so after this DVD came out. He later released the final Megadeth album, "The System Has Failed", which is really a Dave Mustaine solo album released under the Megadeth banner to fulfill contractual obligations (and Dave admits this -- but regardless of whose name is on the front, it's a fantastic album -- Mustaine's best in years.)

Summary: Doesn't do the band justice
Review: Megadeth has reigned in my mind and heart as the absolute best that music has to offer, therefore, I was seething with anticipation for this Behind the Music segment. I watched what originally aired on VH-1 and was bitterly disappointed. The extras on this dvd are somewhat mollifying, but still it lingers.

For years, more than I can remember now, I was(and still am) enthralled with Dave Mustaine. His intelligence and lyrical mastery far surpassed that of his peers. And the music itself, well, I can't explain the genius of the speed, the melody, and the control that he/they have over it all.

But instead of showing the almost palpable intensity and intelligence that Mustaine emanates, the show fell back on the drug abuse and excess that would make of Megadeth little more than another hair band. I knew, just as any other fan would know, that there was trouble in the band with sobriety, but where Mustaine and the boys decided to move on, the show did not.

Perhaps I watched this with wishful expectations. I wanted the band to be honored, as they have never been give their due, and felt that the concentration was too heavily focused on the chaos rather than the balance.

I'm giving this dvd four stars because it is a must for any Megadeth fan despite what I see as its failings(which is just my opinion.)And the extras are really great. Since MTV has give their videos no air time, it's wonderful to be able to see them at all.

If you love the band as much as I do, if you want to see them praised, I wouldn't recommend watching this with the same mindset that I did. Perhaps then more enjoyment could be taken from it.

Summary: Megadeth fans, this is a must-have!
Review: Megadeth was one of the first bands I got into when I first discovered heavy metal so many years ago, and to this day they are one of my favorites. This DVD provides a revealing and intriguing look into the band's past, and specifically into that of its frontman and mastermind, Dave Mustaine.

The story begins with Dave's time with Metallica in the early 80s. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Ron McGovney are on hand to talk about their experiences together, and the problems that eventually led to Dave's expulsion from the band. Shortly after that, Mustaine hooks up with David Ellefson (the story of how they met is pretty funny), and the rest is the history of one of the greatest bands metal has ever seen.

Anyone even passingly familiar with Megadeth's history will know that Mustaine has fought a constant battle with drug addiction over the years, and that is explored quite a bit here: how their lifestyle of drug abuse affected Dave and his bandmates, how it affected the band as a whole, and how bad the whole situation really got.

There is a lot of interesting commentary given along the way, mostly by Mustaine and Ellefson, but also by several former members of the band, including Al Pitrelli and Jimmy DeGrasso, who were with Megadeth when the band broke up; Marty Friedman, their lead guitarist for ten years; Jeff Young, who was with the band briefly in the late 80s; and Chris Poland, the band's original lead guitarist. Chuck Behler and Nick Menza do not appear, and of course Gar Samuelson passed away some years ago. Alice Cooper even shows up for awhile, talking about his relationship with Dave.

Of course, Megadeth broke up in early 2002, after this documentary was shot, so the injury Dave sustained that stopped him from playing guitar is not covered. As of the time of this writing, Dave is healing up according to the doctors' projections, and so who knows what will happen in the future? Perhaps the mighty Megadeth will rise once again to take their place at the forefront of metal.

This is one of the best "Behind the Music" episodes that VH-1 has done, and the DVD gives us the extended version that we couldn't see on TV. Also included is some extra commentary from many of the people involved, and the video for "Moto Psycho." This is definitely worth the purchase for any Megadeth fan.

Summary: Megadeth Behind the Music Extended: A truly great program!
Review: Megadeth's Behind the Music Extended dvd is nothing short of amazing. From start to finish, it's a well presented, informative, and entertaining journey, detailing every part of Megadeth's career, from their start in the early 80s, through the 90s, and all the way up to the present day. This extended version includes many parts of the band's history previously left out on the aired version of the show, including many interviews and stories that help better explain who Megadeth is and the great contribution they've made to the music industry. Throughout the program, you learn about Dave Mustaine's childhood, his desire to succeed, and in short, the band behind the music we all know and love. Various stories are told, and whether they're funny or tragic, you're sure to enjoy every minute of it. Interviews with former band members Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, and Jeff Young help to shed some light on the band's past and add more to the already in-depth program. There are also interviews with Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Alice Cooper, Scott Ian, Barry Kobrin, Scott Menzies, and even David Ellefson's charming mom, Frances. After watching this, you'll be glad you spent the money and learned more about the unique story of Megadeth, their music, and the people that have helped shape their career along the way. This is a must-have for hardcore Megadeth fans, and I'd recommend it to any casual fan of the band or the metal genre in general.
