Summary: I hate the video editing
Review: Great concert, great song list, crappy editing...Just stick with Listener supported

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: give it a chance
Review: I agree with everybody in that the editing on this DVD is no good. At times it is very distracting. However, the performance is out of this world. I watched the video for the first time expecting the worst b/c the previews were so bad and all the reviews are so bad, so I was pleasantly suprised to see that it was watchable. The DMB really do know how to put on a good show, and I know any fan would dig the hell out of this performance. People just checking out the DMB should start w/ Listener Supported, but if you already have, give this one a try. People with epilepsi should probably watch out though.

Summary: Good Music Bad Visual
Review: I agree with the first reviewer. I think the video editor tried to approach the editing with a music video type of style. The camera kept changing rather abruptly from one band member to another then to the audience. I don't mind the camera changes, but to do it constantly within short periods of time is quite distracting for a live performance. Also, the visual effects (the 'tri-window-thingy' and the 'audio/visual sync' in the climax of jamming session) really turned me off. Jump near the end of Two Steps and you'll see what I mean.

In a live performance, I would like to see the performer's facial and body expression especially during the jam sessions. Unfortunately this DVD doesn't really allow you to do that. It Should've been approached with 'Listener Supported' style.

Aside from that, the music is excellent. DMB is in its finest when performing live, so this DVD is still a must for DMB fans.

Summary: * * * * * !
Review: I almost didn't buy this DVD because of the negative reviews here. Bad editing? Bad sound quality? Bad video quality? I think the editing is more than OK and the sound and video quality is just as crisp as one would like. But what's more important - this DVD has the best set-list of all DMB DVDs (but still I miss songs like The Dreaming Tree, Drive in, Drive out and Lie in our Grave.)

Summary: They ruined the music.
Review: I am an avid Dave Matthews Band customer. I have everything they have produced. I can listen to any of their CDs and know almost every single word to every song. Being so, I was not afraid to buy both the CD and DVD. This has been the first dissapointment with Dave Matthews.

On the package, it states with pride that it took 22 cameras to film this event. That sounded good, but after watching the FIRST song, I knew that this was a problem, more than a blessing.

It is as if the editor was afraid to not let a single shot be left behind. The average shot probably lasts for about two seconds. There is no way to connect to the band. Face is, DMB always plays big venues, and unless you have really good seats, it can be hard to feel cnnected. This was always the blessing of a video of a live preformance. This chance we have is taken away from us.

Maybe next time they'll figure out a multitude of cameras can be helpful, if you don't feel obligated to show every single one of them all the time.

This is not to say the music is great. The music IS great. Its too bad the video actually distracts you from listening to it. So just go ahead and buy the CD, and you will be pleased. This product, however, deserves to be forgotten.

Summary: Pales in comparison to "Listener Supported"
Review: I bought this DVD in an effort to get MORE of Dave after seeing "Listener Supported." What you get is less, way less, including less acoustics, less "personal" feeling,...just less. This DVD contains typical concert footage, nothing more. I bought it to see performances of "The Space Between" and "Recently," and didn't really pay attention to the other songs on the lineup, but it turned out I wasn't familiar with most of them and because the video was so impersonal and innocuous, I didn't connect with them. If you don't own the "Listener Supported" video, by all means get that one instead of this one. "Listener Supported" is probably the best music video of all time, and you'll get an intimate feeling and amazing sound quality. This Bounder video is just normal concert footage. BUT IT'S STILL DAVE, SO IT'S GREAT!!! If you want the newer songs, buy this video AND "Listener Supported," but make sure you buy at least one of them.

Summary: Don't Listen to The Whingers!!
Review: I just want to say I was ALMOST put off getting this DVD by all the supposed DMB fans who complained about the editing of this video.

I am a video director, and this concert ROCKS!! Brilliant production all round. As a fan from way back...don't listen to all the idiots here - you NEED this as well as Listener Supported. Both DVD's are different - BOTH great. The set list on Folsom absolutely blows away Listener Supported, though.

One other thing no one else seems to mention - the show is over 2 hours and 30 minutes long - great value.

If you are a fan - BUY IT!!!

Summary: It's nourashing candy
Review: I liked the quick shot editing--I think it works well with the stimulation and excitment of the music. "I did it," was never one of my favorites, but here, I love it, as I see the crowd get down and dirty, having fun, and see the quick visual of the girl energetically brushing her black hair behind her ears while simling, bobing her head, and licking her lips. I'm glad they threw that in there, although others might think it qualified as just another herky-jerky MTV style edit. Seeing the crowd groove, and hug eath other, to Dave is almost as much fun as listening to Dave himself, because, afterall, that night, he made it for them. And it's an attractive crowd. The outdoors effect is beautiful as well--it almost seems as if The Band plays the sun down themselves, during "Bartender." My only complaint is that it appears as if the saxaphone mic droped dead, near the end. But otherwise, a very stiring, emotinal, and beautiful concert DVD, which demonstrates just why so many are captivated by the music.

Summary: I agree: Hyperactive editing
Review: I quite agree with the first reviewer: the editor of this DVD
either has a ridiculously short attention span, *OR* they are
guessing that the average DMB concert attendee does. In either
case, it is a bit distracting.

All in all, I think that the large outdoor show experience is
pretty well captured. I do think that comparing this to
Listener Supported is apples to oranges. The band has
changed, the audience has really changed, and the indoor vs.
outdoor show difference alone makes it impossible to compare the
two. They both seem like good samples.

Summary: A Great DVD / A Nice Alternative to Listener Supported
Review: I think a lot of people/hardcore fans are trying to compare Live At Folsom Field (FF) to Listener Supported (LS). A lot of people expected another LS, but FF is different, and that's a good thing for this long-time fan. LS was very low-key in terms of visual production, while FF is much more heavy on angle changes and special tri-split screen shots. The production of this DVD complements the show's presentation itself. Just like how the LS show was filmed in a 20,000-seat arena with a stage backdrop of dimly lit fans, and the DVD's presentation was simple as well. Folsom was filmed at the 50,000+ seat Folsom Field, outdoors, with stage decor including 4 huge video screens, and tall, inflatable...uh..things. Oh, and the music on FF is much different than that of LS. Not to say it's better (because it's NOT), but it's a 2001 show (and DMB fans know 2001 was a very odd year for the Matthews Band). FF may not be DMB's best show and not the best choice for a DVD release, but the DVD captures the essence of a DMB show. Whether it be good (amazing light show, energy from band and fans) or bad (annoying DMB fans -- there's a lot of them on this DVD). Overall, this is a fun DVD to watch. If you're looking for a DMB DVD and you don't have Listener Supported, get that one first (because it is, in fact, better). But if you have LS and just debating on whether to get this or not, you should. Just be prepared for something different.
