Summary: Primus is back.....and they still rock.
Review: I can't believe the people on here writing about the EP and how bad Primus has gotten. This is infact Primus and anyone who is familiar with the band will know it by hearing it. Ok...so what we have is 5 new songs, not quite satisfying enough for me but is still very good none the less. The first thing you will probably notice is that Primus has started to put out longer songs with more expirimental jams (Carpenter and Dainty Bride, Fats, Rapscallion). I think this is a good direction to take and fits Ler's playing style better than anyone else in the band. The music (at least to me) still sounds like vintage Primus, though Les's bass isn't as overpowering as it was in earlier albums like Cheese, it is actually atmospheric in the song Mary the Ice Cube (which has hilarious lyrics as well). Now this isn't the best Primus has done but it is certainly not the worst and I think that anyone who is a fan of Primus should appreciate this new material.

Now to the DVD...it is pretty much what you would expect. There are the videos and some live footage, an extremely cool video for " The Devil Went Down to Georgia". Primus fans will definately have fun with this. I mostly got this package for the EP though.

Summary: Awesome E.P. with a very cool DVD!
Review: I have listened to the new E.P. 3 times so far, and I like it a lot. Being a Primus fan since 1991, this review might seem a little biased, but I think I can give this E.P. an HONEST review. I'm not going to give an in-depth review because I barely got the E.P. today (thank you so much Kacey for giving me a promotional copy 5 days early!!!)The songs don't sound like any other Primus songs. That's not to say that they aren't good. It's quite the opposite. You can tell these three guys have grown and are full of energy. The new tracks are unusually long, but that's a good thing. Any Primus fan should enjoy this set. The DVD is pretty cool too. It has all the music videos and lots of live footage from back in the old days to the present. So, all primus fans will not regret buying this. It's awesome. So here's a recap of what I think:

The Carpenter and The Dainty Wife - Awesome
Pilcher's Squad - Awesome
Mary the Ice Cube - Very Cool
The Last Superpower aka Rapscallion - Weakest track, but cool song
My Friend Fats - Awesome (Very heavy riffs)

DVD - A must have!!!!

So buy it!!!!!!!!

Summary: Excellent DVD...Mediocre EP.
Review: I play bass. I have many reasons for liking Primus, but Les Claypool's bass work is definetly #1. However, each individual member of the band is exceptionally talented at what they player. Ler is a good guitarist in that he is unlike any other; instead of trying to overpower the bass like most guitarists he'll find a bizarre groove or find some odd noise to occumpany it, and ocassionally will belt out a kick-ass riff. Brain was a good drummer, but Tim, the superior drummer by far, is back, with all his double bass madness. With the reunited Primus at hand, they came together to make an EP...and a pretty mediocre one, at that.

You can read any other review on this site complaining about the EP. My review will now join in this. Primus's talent is still there, but where are the creative riffs? The groove of Les and Tim? Ler's oddball wailing? If there is any on any of the five songs, it's not much. Each song is very long (with the exception of "Pilcher's Squad", which is under 3 minutes) and drags on WAY too long. I don't mind long songs; "Harold of the Rocks" from "Frizzle Fry" clocked in at 6 or 6 and a half minutes I believe and it's one of my favorite songs on that album. But there's just nothing to listen for on here. Every song is boring and keeps the same pace and loudness and tempo throughout it. I wanted at least one song on here to explode into an awesome riff or groove like on the chorus of "Lacquer Head", or the main riff of "Too Many Puppies", or the drum rolls leading up to the opening riff of "DMV". But no. Same boring tempo. But I guess you can find something to like in them. Think of it this way; the songs on here are music for musicians. If you play an instrument, bass, for example, you can appreciate Les's talent, but then, if you hear his other stuff, you know he can do so much else. Nevermind that example. Well, I guess anyway you can appreciate the musicianship on here, because the band is still great at playing their instruments, but seemingly not as good. Les said that he will still be making Primus records, but he compared their record making process to Tool's: the band previously released albums every two years or so. Tool will release a really good album every five years or so, and he thinks that's what Primus should do. He said that the last fifteen years of his life had revolved around Primus, and now he has a family, and Primus will come second. After a great career and many masterpiece songs, this saddened me when I read it, but at least they're still going to make records. All I can say is: if you make a record every five years, we better get our five years-worth. DON'T MAKE AN ALBUM OR AN EP LIKE THIS AGAIN.

Alright. The EP is out of the way. Despite my low, low appreciation on the EP, the reason this little package gets five stars is also on everyone else's review: the wonderful DVD. You get every single music video, from "John the Fisherman" to their Grammy-winning "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". That's 13 videos there, including possibly my favorite music video ever, "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" in which the band frolics about as toy cowboys. You get hours and hours or hilarious, entertaining, and quite frankly bizarre bonus and behind the scenes footage, as well as discography info on each album, making of the videos for a few songs, photographs, making of "The Brown Album" and commentary by the original lineup on the videos for "John the Fisherman", "Too Many Puppies", "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver", "Tommy the Cat", "My Name is Mud", "Mr. Krinkle", "DMV", "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and "Southbound Pachyderm", as well as the band's older fishing trip home video released during the "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" era. Good stuff. So yeah, if you're a fan or someone just now looking to get into Primus, the DVD is more than worth it. Definetly a must, just forget the EP.

Summary: SO COOOL!!!!!
Review: I really like Primus, but I never had the luck to see them live, or to even find a dvd release. But now , the moment has arrived.
At this dvd you can enjoy all Primus videos, from the early Frizzle Fry times to the Antipop album. You can see making of from some of them (nice). But more than 2 hours of dvd give us live perfomances from each album era, an acoustic show and very early live gigs (pre Suck On This).
If you enjoy Primus and want a collection of Primus basics, this is dvd is a need.

The menu is very funny.Typical Primus cover art.

Summary: Awesome Animals
Review: I recently purchased Primus' Animals cd/dvd combo pack. Full retail price of $23.00 was money well spent. Listening to the cd was cool because all of the original band membersgot back together for this album. The best part of the combo by far is the dvd. The dvd has a collection of their videos. What is even better than that, is the extras on each of the album sections. Live performances, backstage jams, guest appearances, and even a fishing trip.
All in all, the best music dvd that I've bought to date.

Summary: Something everyone should own
Review: I remember when the first Tony Hawk game came out, it had "Jerry was a Race Car Driver" on it, and I loved it!, But I was never to sure about the rest of their music, until one day(...), I seen This CD/DVD and the price was $23, so I bought it, Brought it home, put the DVD in, and was blown away(!!!), this has to be the greatest DVD I own. When it first starts, it plays the begining of "Too Many Puppies" and shows clips of some music videos, then it zooms in on a dark shadowy house, and Allows You to select one of the seven options, You can choose to go to the attic and get all the special features, Watch a cover video of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", Look at pictures (I still havnt seen all of them, There are too Many), watch some more videos, ETC., or You can choose an album to watch the videos that were released off of them, See Some of the songs live, See some of the songs being recorded, See how some of the albums were Made, I can go on and on..., The DVD is just great, it has all of their videos, it is a must have for a primus Fan.

now for The CD, Which is amazing, I just love it, "Sgt. Pilcher" is B.A., but its not the only one, each song on here is Great and completly Rock, There are only 5, but they are nothing You'd forget, this is definatly not a CD to forget.

All together, I Recomend this to anybody, but mostly Primus Fans, Every Primus Fan should own this, if they already don't. The DVD is awesome, the CD is awesome, I would spend $40 for it if I had to, thats how much I love it, and I do watch it daily, and its the only thing I can watch when I have friends over, check this out, You won't regret it, and You won't ignore it!, It changed The way I look at Primus,

Summary: Worth the money
Review: If you are a fan of Primus, there is no reason for you not to buy it. The DVD has plenty of cool and rare stuff, such as obscure live performances throughout their entire career. I personally think the EP is lacking a little bit, but it's still worth having.

This is worth buying solely for the DVD, regardless of whether or not you like the songs. I strongly recommend it.

Summary: Extremely nice package, suitably weird
Review: In case you don't know, Primus is a three piece band that sounds like a cross between King Crimson, Phish, Weird Al Yankovic and Frank Zappa. In other words, this is not music for the masses. It's strange, eccentric music imbued with an infectious groove that never lets go. Sure, it's weird. But it's also lyrically hilarious.

Even the name of their own record label cracks me up: Prawn Song. (If you don't get it, pick up one of the later Led Zeppelin albums to check out the name of Zep's label.)

To be honest, Primus albums almost always make me smile...laugh...and shake my head in amazement at the complexity and virtuosity of the three musicians.

Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People is a return to the good old days with drummer Tim Alexander (who shares recording credits with Brain on this disc). These five songs only total some 29 minutes, but they're all deliciously tongue in cheek with grooves that hooked me from the first listen.

In short, prime Primus.

Although the music on the CD is stellar, what's even cooler about Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People is the DVD included with it. All thirteen of their music videos are present, along with a smorgasbord of special features like live performances, backstage footage, etc.

All told, this 2-disc set may be one of the best values in music today. It's certainly the mother load for any Primus fan.

Speaking of which, if you're into Primus you probably already own Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People. If you're not currently a Primus fan, you might want to buy this because it provides a superb overview of the band's creative history.

Then go see Primus on tour this fall. They're playing two sets, one of which is performing "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" in its entirety. (Prawn Song is also reportedly going to release every concert on CD just as Pearl Jam did with their last two world tours. So this tour is historic times two.)

Trust me, I'll be in Detroit at the State Theatre November 9th -- with a big smile on my face!
