Summary: A Cool Document Of A Great Band.
Review: U2 has proven to be a visually inventive band as well as great musicians. This is most evident not only in their spectacular concerts, but also in their unique videos. Consider here "The Best Of 1990-2000" DVD, which compiles concert footage and music videos into a highly entertaining package that delivers basically not just some of the essence of U2, but of great modern rock as well. The opener, "Even Better Than The Real Thing" is a visually dazzling video, psychedelic and spacey, yet futuristic with Bono as The Fly with the rest of the band twirling around. The hits are here, "Mysterious Ways" proves to be a Middle Eastern taste of U2 psychedelia with The Edge's sultry riff (and a spicy belly dancer). We also get the video for "Beautiful Day," from the band's 2000 "All That You Can' Leave Behind," which won Grammy and proves to be an equally soaring video (eventhough the album's best cut, "Elevation" should also be included here). "Electrical Storm," one of the band's new songs, is hypnotic as well as the black and white video that has a classic cinema feel to it. There are great memorable moments here too, as is the case with "Miss Sarajevo," the band's collaboration with Pavorotti that helped the world look towards what was happening in Sarajevo, there is a mini-documentary included chronocling the band's historical 1997 PoPMart Tour stop there. "Gone" is a stunning live performance from Mexico City that shows the band's essence on stage, but the best live clip is "Until The End Of The World," a stunning, exhilarating and roaring performance during the Zoo TV tour. "The Hands That Built America" from the "Gangs Of New York" film is performed here in a clip showing the band sitting around and performing the song, it's a wonderful tune that deserves the Oscar for it's emotional touch. U2 can also be funny, as is the case with the video for "Discotheque" which shows the band apparently inside a disco ball as the Village People at one point, here the band does indeed look "cool" and it displays the band at their funnest. But the most fun video is "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," their "Batman Forever" cut here is expressed with some great animation showing the band in a comic book universe where Bono's stage characters, The Fly and Macphisto square off (also included is an orchestra composed of Batmans). "Staring At The Sun" is lush and hypnotic, with great colors and photography courtesy of Ridley Scott's son who directs here showing he can make just as wonderful images as his father. "Numb" plays like a great acting piece, The Edge sits in front of the camera reciting the song's commands as activities such as women sucking on his face, cutting off his clothes and dancing in his face take place as he continues reciting. Finishing the set is "The Fly," which for some reason is here but not included in the CD set. This is still a hard-edged, spacey track with Bono singing some devilish poetics. One of the joys of this DVD is how the band treats the videos like mini movies, we get director's commentaries (with some interesting insights) and documentaries, also included are some great bonus songs such as the video for "Lemon," which is simply great filmmaking. "The Best Of 1990-2000" is great coverage of U2's most exhilarating decade and ends with the promise of some great rock still rising in the horizon.

Summary: Even Better Than The Real Thing...well almost.
Review: U2's new DVD ("The Best Of 1990-2000") is a great addition to any U2 music collection. It mirrors the CD of the same name in sound quality, plus you get to see the band as well. Oh, let us not forget the seven bonus tracks for a grand total of twenty-three video tracks.

If you like U2 at all do yourself a favor and get this DVD, you will enjoy all or most of the video tracks. Here is the track list: Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, Beautiful Day, Electrical Storm, One, Miss Sarajevo, Stay(Faraway So Close), Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Gone, Until The End Of The World, The Hands That Built America(Theme From "Gangs Of New York"), Discotheque, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Staring At The Sun, Numb, and The Fly.

The bonus tracks are: Please, If God Will Send His Angels, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Lemon, Last Night On Earth, Mofo, and The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

There are also Three Mini-Documentaries: U2 Sur Mer, A Story Of One, and Missing Sarajevo for a grand total of 2 hours and 56 minutes worth of U2 audio-visual. Is it worth it, why it's even better than the real thing...well almost.

Summary: Shame on the band for putting this out
Review: Undoubtedly the worst 'Best Of' DVD ever made, even if someone gives this DVD as a gift you should punch that person in the face...after watching this DVD I felt like burning down the company that made this DVD . If you want to play a practical joke on someone then might as well give this DVD to him as a gift.

There might be emotional reasons why there were some positive reviews of this horror, but it can't be for the actual DVD. There aren't words to describe how bad it looks and sounds. Shame on the band for putting this out. Obviously all them cares about is getting the money and run with a 'Best Of' on DVD.

This item should be removed from the shelves for poor quality in picture. My taped videos on VHS from MTV and VH1 sound and look better than these ones, really. This essay in amatuerism may have some interest.

For worse, is unforgivable is not including the whole video stuff from 90's to 2000. 'Love Is Blindness', 'Walk On', 'Elevation' and several alternative videos were edited out. Didn't they have another filmed version of 'Gone'?. Mexico City 1997 was just a below average performance. Shame on U2 for keep going with 'Gone' from that bad shaped Bono's rough night. I still don't understand why we must to keep watching the same footage for a particular song. I'm talking about 'Until The End Of The World'. In case you don't know, THERE'S an actual video clip from that song. Rather, they just put the well known Sidney 1993 version here.

Rumors say they're going to release a DVD Boxset by late this year. I really don't want 'remastered' versions of shows we've been watching for even 22 years. Rather, I'm fond of watching previously unreleased footage.

Just in case, here's a list of several unreleased PRO-SHOT filmed concerts from early 80's to Pop Mart Tour (I didn't include Elevation because there're 2 DVD's out there from the same Tour). Cheers

Summary: Classic, but where's "Elevation","Walk On" and buffalos?
Review: What you do get is a great collection of U2 video's from "Achtung Baby" to "All That You Can't Leave Behind", with a few "odds and ends" "Electrical Storm", "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" (from the Batman sequel), "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" (from The Million Dollar Hotel), and "The Hands That Built America" (from Gangs of NY), "Miss Sarajevo", but no "Elevation", found on the first "Tomb Raider" film, and no "Walk On"? 2 versions of "One" make it on here, but the famous "buffalo" version doesn't?

When will Popmart and ZooTV be on DVD as well as 1980-1990 and "Under a Blood Red Sky"? Somehow the "Making Of Unforgettable Fire" has been released instead.

And where's the Surround sound?

With all these complaints, I still give it 5 stars because of what IS on there. A vast majority of the music videos they did in that time period, and a lot of extras. I listen to it more than I watch it, but it's one I'll put on frequently enough to give it repeated viewings. The 90s were a major change of pace for U2, taking the band to a whole new level, and the collection reflects it.

Essential? Absolutely. Room for improvement? Always.

Summary: Much, so much better than the CD
Review: While I was disappointed with the collector's edition of the CD (lacking many brilliant B-sides like Night and Day in favor of techno-wannabe remixes), the DVD edition is simply brilliant. Most of the songs that have supported more than one video worldwide see all their versions included (exceptions being the buffalo-themed "one" video, that you can still catch on the "one" documentary, and the alternate "beautiful day" video included in the mini-DVD sold with the CD, that you can place in the DVD box on its reserved space)

The image quality is brillant, and the bonuses are actually all interesting and well-done, which is rare on a music-based DVD (the Bowie DVD is brilliant for its wealth of clips, but has no bonus whatsoever). Aside from the alternate videos, nearly all the videos have an audio commentary filled with interesting bits and pieces about the realisation of the video and anecdotes from the band. Last, but not least, there are a few documentaries about the band and some songs (the "one" documentary is really well done).

Song quality, image quality, bonus quality : all in all, this DVD is a must-have for any U2 fan
