Summary: A good DVD, but falls short compared to other DM releases
Review: 101 is in my opinon, an overrated DM release. I was somewhat dissapointed when i bought it. The DVD contains some classic live songs (shake the disease, stripped) but the overall quality of the live concert and the way the concert is shot is average at best. Most songs are only about 1/2 the live performance, and the other half is just weird filler such as random people dancing or talking.

Personally, i would have enjoyed a "One night in paris" style DVD much more, but this is an ok buy just to see some of the classic songs you've listened to over and over on the 101 double disk set.

Summary: Much better than expected
Review: After reading some other reviews and due to the fact the whole concert was not on this release, I had just about made up my mind not to buy this. After watching my old VHS copy the other night, I changed my mind. I'm glad I did. The bonus disc in this release makes it very worth the money. Pennebaker's interviews with the band were priceless. The changes that each of the members have gone through over the years really made you realize how much time had passed. I can't believe it's been 15 years! Dave has settled down, Martin looks like the average family man and Fletch, well, is still Fletch. Ironically I even enjoyed the interviews with the tour bus kids. I agreed with Martin that at first I didn't really care for them in the film (I hated how I had to fast forward through the tape all the time), now I see some of the value it did add. The bonus concert feature is still heavily edited, but we are treated to 'Somebody' and 'Pleasure Little Treasure' (notice how some girl storms up on stage and races at Dave). If you still find yourself wanting to skip all the escapades, it will come in handy.

The only negatives I found were, for one, the picture quality of the movie was somewhat grainy. My VHS copy has a better picture. Also of course, we don't get the show from start to finish, and probably never will. Blows my mind how such important footage could be lost forever. At least we will always have the CD release and like someone else said, we get about 80% of the concert. I would also I add I am disappointed Alan didn't take part. I've always admired and respected his work, especially with the band. I think this was a tad petty. At least he should tell people why.

At any rate kudos to Chris and D.A. for their hard work in making all this happen. True Depeche Mode fans should be grateful.

Summary: I was there
Review: All my friends wore black that day. We were, oh so cool! Juan was the coolest. He kind of looked like Dave Gahan with beautiful dark skin, black really didn't become him. Though you always wore black to a DM concert, unless you were a wannabe. Then it started drizzling, the lights went down, and the security gaurds wouldn't allow anyone to climb on the chairs. That made us angry, so much so that our argueing with them made us miss the intro, which I caught later on the CD and the Film. Then Daveout ran in white! White! How daring and innovative that was. Then we forgot about the security gaurds, who also forgot about us. We climbed on the chairs and sang our hearts out.

We ran to buy the CD as soon as it was originally released and we went to the KROQ premier of the film. Then they became huge, bigger than life. No longer were they a band that only a few Angelinos listened to. They had concerts afterwards, at Dodger Stadium, which sold several days, huge hits on top 40 radio, and caused a riot during their Violator album signing at Warehouse Records in Hollywood. By then Juan no longer wore black, neither did I. Atleast not fully dressed in black. Our dark days were over, who would've known that DM's were just starting.

As for the DVD, nothing could ever match the experience of being there, perhaps only the double CD.

Summary: everything counts
Review: an entertaining and varied work that takes us not only into the soul of a band that influenced the masses, but into the delightful foibles and dreams of a generation. Through this creatively haphazard and joyous film, those of us who grew up in the eighties experience an uncanny flashback that reawakens all those unique emotions. Many of us are now artists, writers, business-people and mystics shaped by the chemicals and music of the time.

101 takes you into treasured memories - if you were there - and into a glimmer of those special times - if you were not.

Either way, I just can't get enough.

Summary: Nostalgic Fun
Review: Contrary to most reviews here, this is a good DVD. If anything, it captures Depeche Mode at their creative peak. It's also a reminder of a now byegone era when "alternative" and pop music were beginning to coalesce. It's hard to believe that it has been over 15 years since this film was made, and it's also hard to believe that DM are still around after 22 years. It was a nice touch adding recent interviews with the remaining band members. Seeing Martin, David, and Andrew now in their forties - older and wiser and with different priorities adds a nice balance to the footage filmed in 1988 when we were all much younger and believed that we had reached our zenith.

Summary: Sencillamente ETZELENTE !

Review: First of all, this is an amazing video capturing what could be called the climax of Depeche Mode's musical career before Violator. Unfortunetely, I find much more pleasure listening to the album as it seems more in order. Waching DM play NLMDA last with Dave's shirt on (when previously he had it off and threw it), really set me off. Of course I love the DVD and find it very interesting simply for the band.

However, with obvious colortiming faults, sound syncs way off, wrong angles for wrong spots...it's a shame a great perforamance that people still dream about could be somewhat not so greatly put together. The DM 101 music sheets go in order of the DVD (to my emediate memory with out looking through it one more time) but I really find the cut offs in the DVD and such to be a real let down.

I still give the DVD 5 out of 5 because it was one of the best concerts the band has put on and the film is GREAT, but just fiddle with the editing, thats all I ask.

Summary: good to have in your collection, however...
Review: i agree with everything positive that the other reviewers have wrote about this DVD. it's definitely a keeper... the only thing you may want to know and that i will point out is that the second disc is obviously not the whole 101 concert. it's more like highlights of the Music for the Masses tour. first of all, not all the concert footage was from the Pasadena show. you can tell that some songs were performed in a venue that's smaller and even is indoors. for those of you who have the 101 cd, you will notice not all of the songs on the cd are on DVD disc 2. furthermore, the songs that appear on DVD disc 2 have been edited, so you don't hear or see the full versions. i'm not bashing this DVD in any way, but you should keep this in mind when purchasing.
