Summary: WHY BOTHER?
Review: The sound is fantastic (on DTS) but the video coverage of the band is ludicrous - full of crazy angles, wrong editing and - let's face it - it's just not a band that's great to watch no matter how it's shot/cut.

But I give it one star for great DTS sound. Still, I think you'd be better off simply getting a greatest hits CD and listening to that.

Summary: Two Against Nature, One with Excellence
Review: This DVD is not only a prize for die-hard SD fans, it is
a masterpiece of quality musicianship, and recording that any
audiofile would be impressed with.
It's no surprise this won 2 Grammy's for Album of the year
and recording engineering. If your system is set up for
the 5.1 format, you are in for a treat.

The DVD is a mix of performance and interviews while making
the "Two Against Nature" album. The performances are live
from the small sony music stage in New York, and the set includes many
classic favorites like: Josie, Peg, Black Friday, Green Earings, FM,
together with five new songs from Two Against Nature.

This is a must buy!

Summary: Great music successfully transferred to DVD
Review: I have always been a Steely Dan fan, since their first album in the early seventies. When I first heard this DVD of one of their live performances from the late 90's, I was sceptical. Was it possible to transfer their high standard of audio quality to DVD? Oh yes, this recording sounds great (but I am still waiting for their first DVD Audio disc to arrive ; ) The way the band is mixed is quite experimental with the musicians placed all around you. Still, you don't feel that you are sitting in the middle of the orchestra, just that you are completely surrounded by the music. I don't think Steely Dan has the magic of their 70's albums, but it is impressive that they still sound so great as on this DVD, after all these years! [...]

Summary: Incredible Musicianship
Review: I knew DF and WB were really good musicians on their own right, and that they were very demanding band leaders but I was still blown away by the quality of the performance. The sound they get as a live band is absolutely top notch and the renditions of their classics are just what I hoped for.DF's work on the Fender Rhodes and on vocals is excellent; WB's guitar soloing absolutely but nicely unpredictable and the rest of the band, including excellent background singers give a solid demonstration of what good music should really sound like. My favorite song? Josie, by far.The interview bits don't interfere with the songs and, in my view, add up to the excitement of this live experience. Two thumbs up.

Summary: "SM&S" Superior Music & Sound
Review: Actully my review tittle said it all. I purchased the DVD about year ago and still didn't get tired of listening it. Just if you're looking for DVD that will test your HT system this is it, not to metion the music it self. With Steely Dan music is just exactly as with the wine story, "older than better". Not a little mistake on this DVD, beautifull music and superior sound from begining to the end...also need to metion unconventional interviews that don't iterrupt your music, more so educate you what the Steely Dan 20 years later is all about. Got to love it, after all the "rap garbage", there's still real music aut there!

Summary: DTS system explosion!
Review: Well what a treat this format is. And a superb disc to test it. DTS has to be the best thing that happened to me since I got into music! And on a good system this Steely Dan dvd is just great. Whether your a big fan of this genre or not you'll love the quality of the reproduction. Particularly good is the facility to flick between regular stereo (pro-logic), dolby digital and DTS, and boy what a transformation the DTS track makes! The room leaps into life as you are surrounded by the various elements of the mix, and you can sit there and enjoy picking out all the different layers of the music, and the crowd applauding the various instrumentation... a classic for the shelf!

Summary: Awesome
Review: This is the group I remember from my childhood. The sound is incredible and footage is great. I've watched it 4 times and it just gets better and better......

Summary: very good sound quality
Review: The audio quality of this DVD is very good. Steely Dan and his group did well. His performance somewhat reminds me of Stevie Wonder. It would be a very good deal if you could find a good quality used one.

Summary: Could have been 5 stars
Review: The music on this DVD gets 5 stars! The DVD overall would have received 5 stars from me if it had not been for the interview segments between songs. The segments are mildly entertaining/interesting, but I would rather have had them elsewhere on the DVD. Wish I could just hit "play" and watch the concert straight through...uninterrupted.

The music and concert itself is excellent, top notch. One of my favorites!

Summary: No DVD special features and poor video quality.
Review: I've been a SD fan since the age of eight. So this disc immediately went into my collection without hesitation. This is a great collection of music and the interviews provide an interesting look at Becker and Fagan that we rarely see.

What disappointed me is that there is no "DVD content" here. Just pop the disc in and hit play because that's all it does. There isn't even something as simple as a lyric sheet.

Video is sharp but if you look closely you'll see "dot crawl" especially along the borders of bright areas (visible both with an ATi PC DVD player and a Panasonic set-top unit). This is also visible along the edges of the red warning text at the beginning of the disc. Someone did a very poor encoding from the master tapes.

Steven Shumway (also reviews this DVD here) nails the problem with the 5.1 dts mix. The horns are thrown to rear left and the girls to rear right. Well I'm sorry, that's fine imaging if you're sitting in the centre of the stage but it's terrible imaging if you're supposed to be in the crowd. The first time I heard this disc in 5.1 I was actually startled by the horns (which are also a bit too loud) strong rear positioning.

I can only hope that the record company produced this disc without SD's input because it's not up to SD standards.

Overall, I give a 5 for the music, a 2 for the dts mix and a 1 for the DVD. Average that to get almost a 3.
