Summary: Another "Must Have" is released.
Review: As you will see from my other reviews, there are certain music DVD's that I consider "must haves". These products either have been tremendously recorded or have material and presentation that you must see to appreciate. This DVD covers both in a big way. It is beautifully recorded in DTS sound. The mixing of camera angles is very thought out and Union Station doesn't disappoint. As an added bonus, if you have not seen Alison close up, this DVD proves how strikingly beautiful she is and how she carries herself during the performance. The musicians in this group are all very talented, especially Jerry Douglas. Don't miss it.

Summary: Why No Center Channel
Review: Why did Rounder omit the center channel. This is the best performance I have ever seen, (so was the AKUS concert at George Mason University!) BUT, I am very disapointed that the center channel was not used. Why? I called Rounder, I e-mailed them too and have not heard from them even though I was promised an answer. Is mine defective? Either many reviewers do not know what a center channel is or my copy is defective. I would love to hear from Rounder to solve this riddle.

Summary: That's how a concert should be recorded on DVD !
Review: That's it!. That's exactly how a "concert on DVD" should be!.
I'll talk later about the contents, but first the technical details: Outstanding high definition image (16:9 -yes!-) enhanced by the theatre and scenario settings and lights. Impeccable sound (DD, DTS or PCM), you can distinctly hear every single instrument and voices, as well as the spectators "noise" without being bothering at all. No stupid region coding (hey, that's important for some of us!), and best of all, it's a true concert, from the beginning to the end (or it seems so), without interruptions with interviews or captions of the musician's family life: you also have this but in a separate disk, as it should always be. This way you can seat and relax with the twenty three songs, just as if you were at the show. It's even better because the close-up takes are excellent (not a solo is missed), and these are worth seeing it !.
The accompanying disc contains the usual interviews with band members about their background and contribution, and even about their instruments, which is great (pity they forgot to ask Ron Block about his guitar, does anybody knows what is it?) as well as some nice footage of the band while travelling and rehearsing.
Can it be any better ?, well, hardly, but for us, non-English speakers, English subtitles would be most welcome.
Now, about the artistic merits of this edition, I'll assume that if you're considering buying it is because you like AKUS, in which case it won't deceive you. The performance is exceptional. Every member of this band is a top musician, they deserved to be heared separately and when they play together something clicks for the best (in this sense it's the same as with Crosby Stills and Nash, my favorite band of all times). Alison's voice is flawless, she don't miss a note or try to avoid it, and she's great when presenting each member (great surprise to see Larry Atamanuik, an ex-Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers at the drums) Ron Block, Dan Tyminski, Barry Bales, they're all great, ...and Jerry Douglas is a genius.
To the people at Rounder (the editors of this DVD): Great Job!!! More like this !!!

Summary: Outstanding DVD
Review: "Alison Krauss & Union Station Live" is fabulous music from a great group on a nicely done DVD, certainly one of the best I've seen in a while. While a "squished" picture sounds more like a problem with TV/DVD player settings, it is possible there's no center channel--I couldn't hear one--but it sounds so good I don't mind. I thought Alison was very funny in her chatter--one of the "huntin' videos" she talks about is available on VHS. Do a search for "Ultimate Spring II" and see the big turkey!

Summary: EXCELLENT!
Review: This is an excellent product that anyone will enjoy!

Summary: Artistically beautiful - technically terrible
Review: This is a beautiful performance by a great artist that is ruined, for me, by two puzzling technical defects. First, as another reviewer has noted, there is no center channel sound in either Dolby or DTS. What's the point of providing multi-channel sound if the critical center channel is ignored. Second, the picture on my standard aspect ratio tv is not wide-screen as the disc advertises but some sort of "squished" full screen. It's as if the DVD was intended only for wide screen sets. Alison Krauss deserves better production than this from Rounder.

Summary: Absolutely wonderful
Review: This is a beautiful dvd, with most of Alison's best songs. If you like bluegrass music or just Alisons beautiful voice, you will love this. A must have.

Summary: AKUS fan from the midwest
Review: If you like the Alison Krauss & Union Station Live 2-CD set, you will really enjoy this DVD. I had the opportunity to see AKUS live several months ago and this DVD is identical to their current concert tour. Some musical groups are primarily studio musicians. When a live performance sounds identical (or better) than the studio version - you've got real musicians. AKUS live performance is BETTER than the studio version. You can feel the electricity and see what a good time the band has playing their songs. Enough of that - now on to the two discs:

Disc One (All the songs):
The DVD song list is exactly the same as the CD set with one notable exception. The CD set includes the entire concert performance AND the encore. The encore section missing songs are "Down to the River to Pray" (from O' Brother Where Art Thou) and my personal favorite "There Is A Reason". During the encore at a live AKUS show, the entire band comes back out but huddles around one microphone on the left corner of the stage. Alison then sings "Down to the River to Pray" accapella with the Soggy Bottom Boys as harmony and follows with "There is a Reason". The sound quality and harmony is so good, it gives you chill-bumps. The omission of the encore was a serious mistake in my opinion.

Disc 2 (special features):
There are two special features that were outstanding. "Home Videos from the Road" gives you a greater understanding of what AKUS are really like, how they eat while touring, what actually goes into setting up a concert stage, etc. The "Interviews" section was my favorite. Each band member gives an interview discussing how they got into the music business, their favorite songs, their instruments, and lots of video clips from when they were growing up.

Overall, this is a tremendous live DVD set. You WILL NOT be disappointed...

Summary: Wow!
Review: There's not much question why bluegrass is making such a comeback with AKUS leading the charge. There's not a clinker on the entire DVD, and when Alison cuts loose on such classics and "soon-to-be" classics as Lucky One, Stay, Ghost in this House, and There is a Reason, its enough to bring a tear to the eye of the most jaded soul. Truly a masterpiece collection which no true American music aficionado should be without. Very well shot in a truly remarkable theater.
