Rating: Summary: wow Review: I love this DVD! I saw Barbra's very last performance in LA and it was almost the same show as this one. So seeing this DVD brings back a lot of memories.
Rating: Summary: Believe the reviews! Review: I was at the live concert, and the DVD is everything we experienced without actually being back there! I was especially excited to see the actual New Year's celebration was not edited out. That was so exciting live, and it's great to be able to relive it. This DVD is a must for everyone who is a Barbra fan.
Rating: Summary: Don't forget the 2 other concerts Review: I was lucky enough to catch in the same week Liza Minnelli at the Palace as well as Bette Midler and Barbra in Vegas. Liza was the most moving, a triumph of courage over adversity. Barbra was perfection, a profoundly intelligent and caring human being gifted with a golden, now more silvery voice. I was at the New Year's Eve performance and I didn't expect the DVD of the concert to recreate adequately the magic of these moments. Perhaps it was the moment in time, perhaps it was the trepidation at the prospect of seeing, in the flesh, one of the past century's most important performers for the very last time (so we thought), but I will never forget this concert. And it is true that a year after, now that the hullaboola about the year 2000 has passed, what we are left with is Barbra and although she sang magnificently (I do however remember her expression at the end of "Love Come Back to Me" when she knew the last top note would go astray and it did but the clashing of the cymbals mercifully covered this ; we have here the Jan. 1 rendition of the song, where I think she went for a lower note) and spoke eloquently, when I am in a Barbra mood, I feel more encline to watch her 1994 concert or her Central Park concert than this one. Still, it is a precious document on an incredibly gifted, brave, intelligent performer without whom the history of modern music wouldn't quite be the same.
Rating: Summary: Some how, some way, some where, Barbra don't leave us! Review: I was one of the 13,000 luckiest people in the world New Year's Eve 1999. The DVD captures that night much better than I thought it would. Barbra looks and sounds absolutely angelic. Just as she did that night. If you are a fan, I guarantee you'll love this. If you're not, well, watch it anyway and open your heart and soul to the magic that is Streisand. Genuine talent, beauty and grace are rare things nowadays.
Rating: Summary: Having seen this, I had to get it myself! What can I say? Review: It was during a two week break that my partner decided to make me watch the entire show on DVD. It was from 'Start to finish' perfection. The whole show was her story from it's beginning and over two hours and seven minutes bringing us up to 1st January 2001. It truly is a masterpiece performance with old footage playing simultaneously in the background while she duets' with Jason Gould (her son) and also Frank Sinatra. It will take another 'True' artiste of our generation to beat this truly memorable extravaganza. This is an absolute must for anyone's collection. Fabulous, absolutely Fabulous and as a result, I will forever think of my '3 dreams' each and every time I watch this! XX
Rating: Summary: She was tired Review: Jan 1 concert was ver y good but she should have taped her ny ears eve show for tv
Rating: Summary: Recommended Review: Not being an enormous Streisand fan, but, admiring her work in movies, I watched the concert with my little brother. It was highly energetic, and I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. There were some songs I didn't like (Cry Me a River), but that has nothing to do with Ms. Streisand. :) My favorite part was at the beginning of Act II when they did a montage-flashback. Very cool. She has an enormous amount of charisma and is a consummate actress. The way she delivers a song is amazing and I would get the tape just for that. (I did not rate it with 5 stars because I save that for things I think need hardly any adjusting, and, as a friend of mine said, the number with all of the children was "a little schlocky.") -- Romans 10:9
Rating: Summary: A great farewell from one of the greats. Review: So much better than the truncated and aimless version shown on Fox. The restored comic interludes, Savion Glover's "Brother Time," the New Year's festivities and additional songs give her stellar performances a theatrical and narrative context that is completely missing from the TV broadcast. Act One is incredibly exciting and moving, and Act Two -- despite one too many sentimental songs -- ultimately triumphs as Streisand's voice heats up and soars with thrilling confidence. Streisand, despite all the theatrical structure, seems much more relaxed than the '94 concert, and it makes this viewer remember why I fell in love with her talent in the first place. There's nothing quite like seeing this incomparable artist live -- this is much more vibrant and essential than its CD counterpart which seems confusing without the visual reference. An essential and bittersweet reminder that artists like this come around only once in a lifetime. We will never see Streisand sing peform a full concert again, but we will have this DVD as a constant and welcome reminder of what she is and was.
Rating: Summary: Forgettable Review: The recent (March 2004) glorious release of the '94 MGM Grand New Yrs Eve concert on DVD is far superior to this one. The anticipation and magic of the '94 concert just isn't here. Barbra just walks through these songs with not even a hint of the legendary Streisand power and enthusiasm. Quite frankly, she is not even in particularily good voice. Did I really say that? The autobiographical flavor of the '94 concert was fresh and interesting; this one seems just contrived. The choice of material (especially considering Barbra Streisand's massive catalog) is dissappointing as well. 50+ albums and we get nothing but "People" and "Evergreen" and all the other standards. I'd hoped that the DVD live would be better than the CD, but it just isn't. Forgettable at best
