Summary: Awesome Show!!
Review: I saw these 3 together at the House of Blues in Orlando...awesome is an understatement. If this DVD doesn't sound good or you don't like the song selection, either your entertainment system sucks or you don't know anything about guitar!!
I have listened to Vai and Satriani since the 80's and was totally blown away when they began touring together...however many years ago it was. Ordinarily, Malmsteen, I could take or leave. Even when I saw them live, I felt he was out-classed, but still put on a great show.
I recently bought 'Vai: Live At The Astoria' and pleased to see a different song selection on both the DVD and CD sets.
The G3 Jam songs, leave me with my mouth open every time I listen. By far, 'Rockin' In The Free World' is their best jam together, with 'Voodoo Child' a distant second. I didn't care a lot for 'Little Wing', but I'm not a fan of slow tunes or much of Hendrix's stuff.
Coupled with the audio CD, 'Rockin' In The Free World', you'll be doing alright!! The sets have some different songs on them, plus the DVD has a tune from Yngwie's latest CD called 'Baroque And Roll' that is real cool. If you have a chance to actually go to live show, you MUST go...Satriani is pure talent, Vai the showman and Malmsteen adds a touch of classical style guitar that brings it around full circle.
Buy it!!

Summary: Great viewing for any guitarist
Review: The best part of this disc is the G3 Jam section. Watching Satriani and Vai play together is sure to amaze any guitarist no matter what their skill level. The only thing missing from the special features is a much needed "Turn off Yngwie's guitar" option. The abscence of such an option is the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star DVD.

Summary: More G3 please!
Review: I recently purchased this DVD for alot more than it's being offered at here, so take advantage and take it home! It's a great DVD for guitar heads. I've watched an artist's section a day over the past week, and I watched the Malmsteen set at least daily. This kind of DVD will disorient you at first and leave you lifting your aspirations to play guitar to a much higher standard! I found that there was an occasional hiccup or stutter while using the Fret cam option, but all in all I recommend it. John Menna, M.D.

Summary: Fantastic D.V.D.
Review: 1. Joe Satriani - Great guitarist, great musician. His music just feels good to listen to. Even non-guitarists can "get" him. Great songs and stage presence make for a really good opener to the d.v.d. I was happy to see the man perform (finally!). He is definitely capable of making wonderful music.

2. Steve Vai - I preferred the music he played on the Crossroads movie to the music that he puts out on his albums. His playing is too quirky for my tastes, but he is an interesting performer none the less. As a side note, Tony MacAlpine, who definitely needs to be included in a future G3, was there in the back up band. He didn't receive anywhere near the exposure that he deserves. A total waste of awesome, awesome, talent.

3. Yngwie Malmsteen - Yngwie is Yngwie. There are apparently two types of people: people that love Yngwie, and people that hate Yngwie. I personally really love his music and flair. The haters below that were fixated on his weight were apparently watching with the volume turned down. His version of Hendrix's "Voodo Chile" was actually pretty hot. It didn't sound like the recorded version by Hendrix, but this was a JAM and that's what this song was played as: a jam version. He has chops and a wonderful grasp of the baroque style. If only he would put out an acoustic only c.d. ..............Great talent.

The sound quality on my D.V.D. was no where near as bad as the descriptions below. This is not a c.d. If you want a c.d., you should buy the c.d. of the event for more production quality. This d.v.d. was definitely worth the bread. I wish that there had been more behind the scenes/soundcheck/interviews type features, but this was a solid buy and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again knowing what I now know.

Summary: Good quality, great playing
Review: The sound quality of the DVD is excellent, except for the jam at the end when it is difficult to hear YJM most of the time. Satriani's guitar is up front in the mix at all times when he is playing, even during the G3 jam at the end; it can be overbearing when you are trying to hear the other musicians. I don't like his guitar tone, it sounds too 'cartoonish' but you may disagree. At times it seems like Satriani and Vai just stand there, stare down at their guitar necks and are purposely not playing fast for some reason (especially Vai). If I want to see people play like that, I'll go see a local band. Yngwie, on the other hand, dances around these guys in more ways than one. He has a real spirit and love for the music that comes across well, and is a true inspiration for people who are disappointed by the metal scene in America today. He appears untouched by grunge and nu-metal and is still playing the same as he has for 20 years (while Satch comes across as a weirdo in a ridiculous hat and sunglasses). He plays amazingly fast and clean, all while running around, kicking picks into the audience and swinging the guitar around his neck. And his acoustic guitar solo is just plain jaw-dropping, and puts many other "professionals" to shame. As you can tell, I'm not a big fan of Satriani or Vai, but I still watch their sets because they are good players. However, their scale and note choices and their frequent use of one-hand tapping gets annoying very quickly. Despite what some other reviewers here have said, Satch and Vai aren't that fast (anymore); they just tap a lot. Remember when Steve Vai was in Crossroads? That was a long time ago. BUT if you like their style, you will naturally enjoy this DVD. And of course if you like YJM, you know what to expect. The jam at the end is a bit awkward. The best way to describe Yngwie is "does not play well with others." He seems out of place, but that's a bit unfair to him, because Satch and Vai have been friends for years. Yngwie could've toned it down a bit and acted like a team player, but why shouldn't he show these guys what rock/metal is all about? Please note: there is no singing on the DVD except during the ending jam. All songs are instrumental only. One problem I did see is that without vocals, there's a lack of structure in the sets. Unless you know the songs well, it's hard to tell if one is being played or if there's just a jam going on. Other than Satch Boogie and Baroque and Roll, the songs don't have a really strong hook to distinguish them from each other. Overall, the DVD is well worth the price, if you like instrumental rock and/or these musicians.

Summary: Satch and Vai Excellent... Yngwie Average
Review: I've been a big Yngwie fan for quite a while... own every album etc... But I must say i enjoyed Satch and Vai much more than Yngwie...

I found Yngwie's performance a bit average when compared with these other two masters... never thought I'd say that but its the truth...

On a whole though I think it's well worth the purchase!

Summary: This is absolutely awesome
Review: I'm not much of a review writer, but after reading some of the reviews here, I had to put my 2 cents in. If you like guitarists, and like the speed and precision of Yngwie, Vai, and Satriani, then get this video. A friend of mine told me about it, and it is worth more than the $12 or so Amazon is charging. I have seen Yngwie about 4 times, Steve Vai once, and Joe Satrini twice, but never all at once. I strongly recommend this video if you like guitar music. One of the things that made me write this review was parts of the the editorial review - "There's little to speak of in terms of songs or melodies" and "But do you think you could play some music now?" This IS music - the guitars sing the song!

Summary: Not bad
Review: This DVD should have had the full set's
of Satriani,Vai and Malmsteen.

5 song's for Satriani,3 for Vai and
5 for Malmsteen.

Overall,watching these guitar players
jam together is amazing.

This is a must own for every fan only
If you wanna see a 2 hour dvd.

Summary: MAKES ME WISH I HAD BEEN THERE
Review: This disk is loaded with stellar guitar playing and showmanship. It's broken down into 4 sections: 3 with the name players with their respective bands, 1 with the 3 name players all jamming together with Joe Satriani's band. The dvd starts with Joe Satriani's performance. The 4 songs included have all been recorded live elsewhere so there's nothing new here. However, I loved the performances. I never thought Joe was a player who uses his music to showcase his technique. Nothing about his performances on this dvd has changed my opinion. I like the vibe that Joe has throughout his set: cool and laid back while playing aggressive sounding songs. Steve Vai's set is next and I found it very exciting. Steve has a way of being showy but without seeming like it's coming from someone who is arrogant. Not an easy thing to pull off in my opinion. The first song, which he did with the "three headed monster", was interesting if not exactly memorable for its melodic content. "Juice" is an energetic boogie with some of Steve's patented smooth as silk playing. Watching Billy Sheehan's performance, on this song, is also worth its weight in gold. The guy was truly "into it". Watch how Steve pulls his entire band together for the last song in his set "I'm The Hell Outta Here". The section where they're all taking turns kind of reminds me of the Dixie Dregs "Cruise Control". Yngwie Malmsteen is the last of the solo sets. He played various instrumentals pulled from several albums. After a while, the songs all sound the same to me. Double bass drums, muted rhythm guitar and squealing keyboards. But I enjoyed it. I'm one who tends to enjoy Yngwie's music in small doses and 4 songs here were just enough. I personally didn't like the sound of a pick being used to play a nylon string guitar on his solo piece but that's uh, nitpicking. Finally, the jam. Of course, it was used as a vehicle for each player to solo over sections of a well known rock song but I loved the beginning of "Rockin' In A Free World" where they all harmonized. It was amazing to hear how their own guitar sounds meshed so well together. The last two songs, both from Jimi Hendrix "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Chile - Slight Return", were played so sloppily I found little to enjoy. That is except, of course, the solos. Yngwie played a million notes that, to me, were all worth hearing. Steve's solos showed his versatility in various techniques and settings. Joe's solos showed his cool, laid back, into the song - vibe. All in all, an enjoyable dvd if you love guitar playing.
