Summary: Singularly Uninspired
Review: First, you take a brilliant stage show which has been the toast of both New York and London. Then you re-write it in an apparent effort to dilute the power of the original. Then you hire three stars who can't sing the material, so it has to be re-written yet again for their voices. And then you wonder why the film's success doesn't equal the original's. If you listen to the Patti LuPone New York soundtrack and then see the film... you'll know exactly what went wrong for the film version of EVITA: in a word, everything. A lesson in how NOT to make a successful film.

Summary: Good to see a change in the rather dull movie market
Review: I found the film a visual and theatrical masterpiece. I find it rather troubling when a reviewer would bother to write about a film they haven't seen and base all their qualms on their hatred of a person. You have to go beyond your own shortcomings and try to find the merit in things. If you've done so, then your remarks of like or dislike are grounded. If you continue to hate on prejudice, then you have become worse than the person, whom you scorn.

Summary: IT IS A MASTERPIECE!!!
Review: tHE MOVIE eVITA WAS A SET DESIGNERS DREAM. iF YOU HAD UNLIMITED RESOURCES THIS IS THE WAY THE STORY SHOULD HAVE BEEN. i CAN UNDERSTAND WHY IT TOOK SO LONG TO MAKE. i THOUGHT mADONNA WAS PERFECT FOR THE ROLE, AND THE FACT THAT HER LIFE IS VERY SIMILIAR TO THAT OF EVITA, IS JUST ANOTHER REASON, SHE WAS PERFECT. eVITA WAS A PERSON WHO KNEW WHAT SHE WANTED AND WENT AFTER IT SO IS mADONNA!. i ALSO SEE SIMILIARLITIES IN eVITA AND hILLARY! i LOVE THIS MOVIE AND LOVE TO SHOW IT TO FRIENDS OR JUST WATCH IT ON MY OWN.

Summary: A beautiful, cowardly whitewash
Review: If Andrew Lloyd Webber still owns the rights to this work, I'm very surprised that he allowed the incredible rewrite that is this film. In the original musical, Evita was not an ambivalent, shades-of-grey character, she was calculating, manipulative, selfish, ruthless and heartless. Here, some of the most revealing elements of her character are either transferred to others (her mom gets some of her more cynical lines in this one) or simply no longer exist. Chief among these sins is the total absence of the verse from "And the Money Kept Rolling In" referencing missing "charity" cash and rumored Swiss bank accounts:

"When the money keeps rolling in, what's a girl to do? Cream a little off the top for expenses, wouldn't you? Oh what bliss to sign your name as 30127.... Never been accounts in the name of Eva Peron!"

Man, that is highly damning stuff, and it's gone, gone, gone. Andrew, why'd you chicken out on this? Or don't you care about the lyrics? How about the story?

But, I gotta hand it to them, it LOOKS great. Antonio gets as many costume changes as Madonna, and he struts his stuff every bit as fabulously. Sorry though, folks, Madonna's not a singer, she's a personality. Unfortunately, this is an operatic role. So thumbs down for her singing, though it's obvious she tried to improve. There's only so much to be done with that raw material.

Anyway, Tim Rice wrote a wicked commentary about a wicked woman. It's a shame they needed authentic Argentinian backgrounds more than they needed that authentic work of art.

Summary: Mixed feelings...
Review: Evita is one of my favorite musicals ever, and this movie introduced me to it. When I first saw it, I thought that everything about it was just simply perfect, but now that I've seen it at least five times, I realize that Antonio Banderas goes the entire time with one of two expressions on his face - "Frown" and "Bigger Frown". He's hot and I like his voice, but he's really not much of an actor. Madonna is much the same way - I like her voice and she's certainly not a BAD actress, but after you listen to the LuPone/Patinkin version of this show you will be able to tell that something is definitely lacking in both performances. But that doesn't make the movie unenjoyable by any means. I still adore it, I just can see now where it would have been better.

Summary: Truly on the Mark
Review: Let me begin my saying I am not a Madonna fan. However, I am a HUGE theatre fan and have had the opportunity to see Evita on stage. To put it simply...the video is better. It is touching, easy to follow, and both Madonna and Antonio hit the mark with ease. I saw the movie in the theatre when it first came out and was delighted. Being a theatre fan, this past birthday I asked my hubby to get me "Cats" and "Evita" on tape so that I could enjoy them whenever I like. The fact that this many years later I requested the video stands as a testament to the quality. See for yourself...judge for yourself...I don't think you will be disappointed!

Summary: I'll give Madonna credit for this one!!
Review: I am the all time loather of Madonna, don't own one CD of hers.I was crushed when I heard that she had landed this role.I was even more surprised to here that Antonio Banderras was going to actualy sing in this flic, just thought he was some nice eye candy.Well I was astounded!!This is the best adaptation of a play to the screen that I have ever seen.Madonna carries the role of Eva Peron with a true dedication to the subject matter and the score. She was absolutely magnificent in this part. And Antonio, well I almost fell out of my theatre seat when I realized that he could sing, and sing well, and act to boot!!Jonathan Price a veteran stage actor was excellent in the role of Juan Peron. The location shots are beautiful,so are the costumes and great Tango sequences. This is a movie that I will watch over and over and show to young people as an introduction to theatrical scores. I never had the opportunity to see Evita on Broadway, but now I feel that it could only pale in comparison to this beautifully acted, fabulously sung, and lovely to watch movie. It is a keeper, buy it now!!!!

Summary: ¡Vivirás Eva Parón & Madónna!
Review: Frankly, I LOVED this film! A lot are bashing it (the critics included), but that's because-and this is a fact-about two out of every ten (if even that many) like operas. This is an opera, and I love it. Madonna's played Eva Parón better than anyone else could.

People think Madonna's a slut, so she should be able to portray the wonderful Eva Parón. Well, historical fact: Eva Parón was a prostitute on her way up to the top; as far as I know, Madonna has never sold herself. People are just being hypocritical.

Juan Parón and Ché are great, too. The whole movie is wonderful and dramatic. All of it's sung, and Madonna's newly-trained voice is heavenly. You can turely tell the difference from her voice from 1994's "Bedtime Stories" to the 1996 Evita Soundrack-it's incredible! Her voice is richer, fuller, better controled, and more beautiful than ever! This is a whole new singer and women.

Whether you're a Madonna fan or not and love opera and historical movies, this is the *perfect* movie for you. And I should add, Madonna is so damn good, you can actually forget you're watching Madonna act and sing. You think you're looking at Eva Parón!

Also, buy the widescreen version of the film and get back the 43% of the picture they cut out when they fomat it to fit your televison screen. The seen where Madonna sings "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" wouldn't be the same with 43% of the picture sliced off.
