Summary: Okay, But Lame Follow-Up
Review: Never, *ever* watch this film right after watching "Guns Of Navarone" one of the greatest war films of all time, which not only had superb action but also boasted a literate script and outstanding character depth. Not so "Force 10" which took so long to become a film after first being proposed in the late 1960s, that by the time all the money was in place David Niven and Gregory Peck couldn't play war heroes anymore at their ages. And so, we get Robert Shaw and Edward Fox in the old Peck and Niven roles, and the contrasts are really jarring (Mallory now being British, and he's suddenly forgotten how to speak German). Taken on it's own, "Force 10" works as a lighthearted escapist romp and can be an entertaining diversion, but the shadow of it's magnificent predecessor just hangs over the proceedings too much (opening the film with the climax of "Guns" doesn't help either.)

Summary: Decent Film But Shamelessly Revisionist
Review: This movie is not awful, and the plot, musical score and acting performances are in many cases quite decent. However, it contains a wildly inaccurate, revisionistic depiction of the political affiliations of the various Yugoslav guerrillas.

First, the movie depicts the CHETNIKS as pro-German. NOTHING could be further from the truth. The Chetniks were anti-Communist, pro-Allied officers (led by Draza Mihailovic) who fought against the Wehrmacht in an attempt to restore the Yugoslav monarchy and the duly constituted government overthrown by the Germans in 1941. They had a generally western political orientation and were predominantly Serb. The USTASHE (headed by Ante Pavelic), on the other hand, were pro-Nazi and anti-Chetnik. They were overwhelmingly made up of Croatian nationalists and fought alongside the German army against the Chetniks and the Allies throughout the 1941-45 Yugoslav campaign.

The Communist PARTISANS (fronted by Josip Broz Tito) were pro-Soviet. Although Tito was a Croat, the partisans were principally Serb and fought against both the Chetniks and the Ustashe. They were far more reckless than the Chetniks in their fight against the Germans, and as a result their tactics invited the typically bloody German reprisals against the Yugoslav people as a whole. At the end of the war, the partisans turned their (Soviet supplied) arms against the Chetniks in a civil war against the Yugoslav government and brutally communized the war-weary nation, executing Mihailovic shortly afterward. The present-day Serbian government of Slobodan Milosevic is the ideological heir of Tito, and the often savage events in the Balkans since June 25, 1991 serve to prove how intolerant these people are against any group who seeks freedom, peace and independence from Belgrade.

Since even a casual student of WW2 knows the distinction between these groups, the only logical conclusion that can be drawn is that the makers of this movie (which must have been reviewed by and acceptable to Yugoslavia's Communist government in 1978) purposely sought to distort the truth.

By maligning the Chetniks in such a manner, this movie does a disservice to all Balkan peoples - as well as to the Allied soldiers who fought alongside them in WW2. If this film were edited and every use of the word "Chetnik" was replaced by "Ustashe", then this injustice would be properly dealt with.

Summary: Good stuff
Review: This is a good war film but not a patch on the original Navarone. If they had not relied on the previous film to promote this one, I think I would have enjoyed it far more than I did. However, it is still a great film which any war fanatic will enjoy, just dont expect the same quality as the Guns of Nvarone.

Summary: Sequel in name only
Review: I've always liked this film. When compared to its predecessor, Guns of Navarone, it falters a bit. However, it is a good action/war adventure that gets a bum rap because of its lineage.

Might have been better off had they not worked in the Navarone connection.

Good performances all around, and a fun, enjoyable 2 hours.

Summary: a return to WWII
Review: If you treat this as a seperate, non related entity to the GUNS OF NAVARONE, then you will enjoy it a lot. It is a WWII action story & it has a lot of great action & story developments. I only wish they hadn't used any of the Naverone name or characters (played with obvious inferiority to the original).

Summary: THIS IS GREAT!
Review: This makes The Guns Of Navarone seem so boring. As a 14 year old, I represent all youngins' when I say this movie is awesome. But don't be intimidated by my age. This movie has a great plot, great acting and awesome action!

Summary: Not as bad as the critics think
Review: I think this movie has gotten a bad rap from Hollywood critics. I've always kind of enjoyed it, even with it's storyline glitches, and believe me I am very picky about WWII movies. OK, totally believable it's not, but if you're looking for an exciting adventure movie this might be your thing. It is interesting to note that this is one of the earlier movies to portray the hotbed of Balkan politics that we all know today. I first saw this film when I was still young and in school and it inspired me to read up on the Balkans, it's Partisans, Chetniks, Croats, and Serbs. Strange as it sounds, I actually had a better understanding of Balkan politics when Yugoslavia splintered in the early 90's thanks in small part to this film. Don't sell the movie short until you have seen it.

Summary: Another Classic Movie Ruined By A Poor Sequel
Review: This movie is tolerable, but it is still a poorly made movie. Attempt to make a comparable sequel to the 1962 classic THE GUNS OF NAVARONE. This time, British and American commandos are sent to Yugoslavia to blow up a bridge (they blow up a dam instead). Harrison Ford, Edward Fox, and Robert Shaw give off uninspired performances. This is early work for Harrison Ford though. This movie goes so fast there is hardly time to explain what the hell is going on anyway. One moment they're being instructed about the mission, the next moment they're beating up Military Policeman, the next moment they're in Yugoslavia killing Germans. And talk about an unorganized mission! If the Allies ever tried this they would've failed in two seconds. Very fake I must also add. Filmed in Yugoslavia with nice scenery, and tanks, vehicles, and extras all came from Yugoslavia too. Just don't waste time with this movie it is very bad.

Summary: Awesome war movie
Review: Must be one of the best war movies of all time. I can watch this movie over and over again. Also one of the finer films of the sixties.

Summary: Fantastic WWII lesser known theatre of opns yarn! Excellent
Review: Robert Shaw, Harrison Ford (just post Star Wars), Carl Weathers, Robert Fox, and Richard Kiel do a superb job in this WWII commando film. Not to mention the incomparable Barbara Bach! Certainly the equal to The Guns of Navarone or Where Eagles Dare, Force 10 is a must-see for the WWII buff, particularly in its authenticity of period small arms and costumes. Add to that it deals with a lesser known theatre of operations that has proven relevant with today's headlines. Plot twists and action, betrayal and suspense are interwoven in this well written, directed, and executed tale. Two thumbs up for certain!
