Summary: Story of Redemption
Review: Director Peter Antonijevic has suggested that the violence in Savior may be too real for politically correct American audiences used to the impersonal, attenuated violence of Hollywood (with its machine-gunned bad guys in blood-spurting, slow-motion close-ups). The film makes no attempt to distance the viewer from its honest depiction of the inhumanity and brutality born of ethnic hatred, a hatred so deeply felt that it leads to the rape, torture, and casual execution of women and children. Antonijevic may be right, because the movie received mixed reviews and was largely overlooked by the public. That's unfortunate, because it was one of the most powerful and moving films of 1998.Based on a true story, the film takes place in Bosnia in 1993, and it masterfully conveys the brutality of the war. Some critics faulted it for not taking a political stand, for being a generic war movie that didn't explore the historical context of the conflict, as if it were a documentary. What it's really about is the depths of hatred to which a person can be driven, what evil he's capable of at those depths, and, most importantly, what it takes to save him. What it takes is the humanity of others, and what the film ultimately does best is show the humanity that persists even in the midst of such horror. Dennis Quaid lives up to the role of his career by giving the performance of his career. He takes an initially reprehensible character and turns him into someone who, if not yet redeemed, is worthy of redemption. The rest of the cast (mostly Yugoslavian stage actors) is uniformly excellent, especially Natasa Ninkovic and Sergej Trifunovic. (Note: Nastassja Kinski receives lead billing, but only appears in the first few minutes of the film.) The DVD transfer of the Superscope original is extremely well done, as is the Dolby 5.1 audio. Extras are few, but Antonijevic's commentary is fascinating, never more so than when he talks about the difficulties of realizing his vision while working within the constraints of the Hollywood system.

Review: I have seen the movies several times over the past couple years...I get excited seeing it everytime; as a prior service soldier in the US ARMY I can understand his love and loss; the actors portrayed every emotion to the fullest througout the movie; I recommend everyone to see this movie...

Summary: Do Not Miss This Movie
Review: I had not heard anything about this movie when I rented it, I just knew that Dennis Quaid was in it (I'll watch anything with him in it). What I discovered was one of the top five movies I have ever seen. I won't bore you with a retelling of the story, suffice to say that it is totally engrossing and it is one of those movies that just stays with you. Some of the scenes, especially those with the young woman in them just hit me like a physical blow. A truly amazing movie.

Review: This was a little seen by critics and audiences, who`s have miss this strong and powerful film about Redemption. After his wife and son died in a bombing in paris from a terrorist act. Six years later, Johusa Rose(Quaid in breakthought performance) has join in the foreign legion... Joshua has a hard time letting go about his tragic pass and still has his possessed vengeance in him until he meets a young pregnant woman named Vera(Natasa Nickovic)... Together Johusa and Vera embark on unforgettable journey in a survival through a war-shredded world. There are helping each-other to survive their needs for thier solution to finding hope and redemption. Great writing by Robert Orr and Directing by Peter Antonijevic. Co-Produced by Oliver Stone. 4½ Stars/5 Stars. DVD included a director running commentary track, a great picture quality and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround is excellent in this superb drama. Grade:A. Super 35.

Summary: One of the Most Disturbing Films of All Time
Review: SAVIOR is one of the most brutal, disturbing films I have ever witnessed, and certainly one of the best films of the year. It is about hope in the face of war, but it is never uplifting. Instead, it forces some of the imagery inside your head with some of the most brutal and uncompromising scenes since SCHINDLER'S LIST. The plot concerns a man named Joshua Rose (perfectly played by Dennis Quaid), whose wife and child are killed moments after he sees them. Hearing that Muslims may be involved, he goes to the nearest Mosque and opens fire on the innocent people praying inside. To escape his crime, he joins the Foreign Legion, overseas. This is where he meets Vera, a woman pregnant with her rapist's child. Rose (who goes under the name of Guy in the Legion) saves her from certain doom, and takes her under his wing. Together, they try to escape the cruelties of war, and perhaps to start a new life. I think everything about this movie is first rate, from the stunning cinematography, to the soundtrack, and to the excellent performances (especially by Quaid and Natasa Ninkovic as Vera). This movie is definately highly recommended. If it does nothing else for you, it will at least open your eyes to the horror and ultimate pointlessness of the war going on in Bosnia. A little side note: Oliver Stone serves as executive producer.

Summary: Watchable
Review: After seeing the theatrical-trailer of this DVD, I've decided to see it. It's embarrassing how us, as foreign soceity, don't understand the least of the ethnic hatred that went on in the former state of Yugoslavia. Building a story on that is actually very important. Take a look on how many stories were made about the holocaust. But.. Having a good story is not enough. Director Antonijevic had some interesting insights, but Dennis Quaid's acting skills are simply appaling. Nastassja Kinski is, however, remarkable. Watchable would be the most appropriate definition for this film, but it ends with this.

Review: Chances are you didn't hear about this film when it was released. Due to its extremely limited theatrical release, it's essentially 'straight-to-video'. But don't make the mistake of writing it off as a B-movie. Dennis Quaid gives an award-caliber performance in this very moving war film. This is not fun to watch by any means. While never 'graphic' in a conventional way, this film has scenes of horrific violence and cruelty that are impossible to shake off. Rent or purchase the DVD edition, it includes a director's commentary track. Even if you are not a big fan of war films, this powerful story will draw you in and keep you watching.

Summary: Addictive
Review: Saviour was fantastic. The input from the Yugoslav co-director contributed to its authenticity and appeal. I thought Goran's character was intriguing. The bad guys are usually portrayed as loud, foul-mouthed and rugged. Goran was articulate, educated, well-groomed and violently unpredictable. Before the war, Goran had been a student into western pop-culture but after the onset of war, joined the Serbian army and turned on his Muslim neighbours. I especially liked the dialog written for his character; I was fasinated by it. I thought the massacre scene was symbolic - that the Serbian woman is murdered along side Muslims by Croats (I think that's what happened - it was hard to keep up with who was killing who and why - but I guess that is war for you.) The soundtrack is unbelievable.

Review: One of the best films on the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina, and filmed in Montenegro, none of the war's main factions are spared; all show their brutality, though in different ways. This, together with the breathtaking Balkan mountain landscape, the haunting folk music, by the Belgrade Folk Choir, and the attention to cultural details, combine with the unique plot, to make this the one film, if you are only going to see one film, on this conflict.
