Summary: This is not the sanitized network movie version
Review: I regret that I first saw this film on network television after it had been hideously butchered by censors. Seeing the complete and restored work for the first time, however, was almost like seeing a different film.

Much has been written about the acting, cinematography, sound track, production and direction of this film, all deservedly praiseworthy. I believe that all of these, however, serve to accentuate the ambivalence, and perhaps the amorality, of T.E. Lawrence. This film was far ahead of its time in its portrayal of the loathing and self-doubt experienced by a classically educated, Western man in contact with elemental nature and with the primal savagery of war.

The broadly hinted at homosexuality and sado-masochism that Lawrence was never able to come to terms with in his written works also recur throughout this film, not as grotesquery, but rather as one further layer of misery and conflict added to the cauldron of war in the desert.

Understated in many ways, this film maintains an amazing humanity, filled with pathos and dignity. It is deserving of a considered viewing.

Summary: First-rate all the way: script, acting, and photography.
Review: This remains the only film I have ever seen that truly captures the incredible desert beauty of the Middle East while telling a story of duplicity and cynicism that laid the foundation for the turmoil and hatred that still burdens that region. Peter O'Toole's protrayal of T.E. Lawrence is the best work he has ever done. The film is quite simply a classic.

Summary: A sweeping biographical epic by David Lean
Review: David Lean's stunning cinematography and artful story tellilng keeps the viewer glued to the set, despite the length of the film. The life of T.E. Lawrence, who played a major role in the winning of the Middle Eastern campaign during World War I. Called a blasphemer for his optimistic and " nothing is written "view of life. His methods are often criticised and at some times he may appear to be almost hypocritical but he is, at heart, a good man and the film portrays this well. This is the epitome of the historical biography at its best as only David Lean can produce.

Summary: Brilliant
Review: The script is brilliant, with ambiguities that most movies don't have, with O'Toole playing those ambiguities in Lawrence's character brilliantly (it's a crime he didn't win the Oscar). And Lean's disciplined shooting of the scenes (it took two weeks just to film the introduction-of-Omar-Sharif scente) make this one of the greatest films ever. Most epics have a hero who is a typical hero, with hardly any quirks. LAWRENCE is an epic that flaunts its lead character's eccentricities; and is a masterpiece because of it. END

Summary: Clasic adventure/drama about T.E. Lawrence
Review: This is the classic adventure/drama about the exploits of T.E. Lawrence, the British army officer who organized the arabs into an effective force to fight the Germans during World War I. Peter O'Toole has the role of his life as Lawrence. The cinematography is absolutely stunning with most of the footage being shot in the desert with sweeping scenes. The music is perfect for the movie and is captivating. In my humble but accurate opinion, this is one of the ten best movies ever made and is a "must see" for anyone who has even a casual interest in serious, quality movies. END

Summary: Still terrific after all these years!
Review: David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia," starring Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence, is a masterpiece of movie making and surely deserving of its "Best Picture" award in 1962.

As fine and gifted an actor as O'Toole has been throughout his distinguished career, his portrayal of Lawrence was truly magnificent and flawless. From "Lawrence" to "Becket" to "The Lion in Winter" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," and other wonderful performances - which earned him an honorary Academy Award in 2002 for his "remarkable talents [that] have provided cinema history with some of its most memorable characters" - his performance as Lawrence still stands out.

The DVD contains extra footage detailing the difficulties and Herculean effort required over two and a half years, in brutal heat that reached 135 degrees; however, the end result is Hollywood at its finest, perhaps unequaled by recent movie making. Steven Spielberg, among others, extols the movie's virtues.

For those interested in the pure beauty of its photography, unaided by today's computer-assisted "everything," "Lawrence" is moving making at its best. Lean was a taskmaster, but the results speak for themselves and will endure long after today's films are forgotten. It is a classic.
