Summary: The truth of war
Review: This is not a blockbuster action film, nor an action packed war movie. It is a REAL WAR movie. When the crew is scared, your scared. When the crew is bored, you are bored. When the crew gets out of a bad situation, you cheer with them. This is the greatest war movie ever made. Everything feels and sounds real. Watch this movie, especially the ending, and you'll never want to join a war. Ever.

Summary: The Greatest Submarine War Movie Ever Made
Review: The earlier war movies (up to 1970) always show unrealistic bravery. I guess they were made to promote national superiority. But lately we start seeing the meaning of war and its side effects. Das Boot is the only movie that clearly shows people like you and me fighting in a war we don't understand. The only movie that comes close to this one is U-571.

Summary: Das Boot
Review: No doubt the best submarine movie ever made. In fact, the best war movie ever made. In my opinion, this is probably the best movie of any type ever made, surpassing Private Ryan (which I believe is the second best), among many others. See this one with at least a 35" screen and good stereo. The depth charge effects through good stereo penetrate your soul. Quad sound allows you to hear sounds from in front and behind you. The actors portray their excitement, stress, fear, and other emotions to the point that you can actually feel how they feel. I've seen the original, and I've seen it dubbed, and no doubt watching the directors cut with subtitles brings true reality in the German language. I typically do not like seeing a movie more than once, and I have seen this 4 times so far, and plan on seeing it at least twice in the next 3 months. You will be pleased.

Summary: Fabulous movie made even better on DVD in both languages
Review: I'm an avid Scuba diver and the summer I dove the wreck of the U853 off of Block Island, Rhode Island (the last German Uboat sunk in American waters), the film DAS BOOT was running in my head as I touched the outer hull of the U853, now in frigid and deep Atlantic waters.I had seen DAS BOOT many years ago on the recommendation of my brother. We saw its first release (at "the movies") which was in German with subtitles. Even so many years ago, it stuck in my head right awawy... it was my first movie with subtitles, but I never remembered even reading them.... I was so caught up in the gripping drama and action of the film. What a tremendously powerful statement on war this movie makes. It was profound for me, even as a teen ager. Many years later, having studied the German language now for over a decade (I wanted to know what those Germans were *really* saying in that film!). I just LOVE the DVD edition because I can watch it in English OR German, with or without subtitles. It's fabulous to have fun watching a movie AND improve your German language skills at the same time. At least FIVE of the original German actors were called back to do the English dubbing (the five lead actors)when the film was re-released in English... so their voices are very authentic indeed. I love submarines and this is the BEST SUBMARINE MOVIE EVER MADE and one of the most profound statements ever made about war in general. An unforgettable film.

Summary: A must see for submarine fans and movie fans alike
Review: "Das Boot" is by and far the best submarine movie ever produced. After seeing quite a few submarine movies that range from decent to all out horrible, this is the one to see. Wolfgang Petersen is a very skilled director when dealing with very claustrophobic environments, such as a hijacked 747 in "Air Force One," or a quarantined town in "Outbreak." But in "Das Boot" he truly outdoes anything done before or after. This movie is filmaking at it's finest. By being so long and drawn out, which was at first kind of a turn off, it makes the viewer become more and more drawn into the plot and the predicament of the crew. By the end, you have a real idea of what living for days and months at a time under the water is like. I'm a US submariner, so I have first hand experience. This movie has the ability to at least give the viewer a taste of that. Some American viewers won't like it, it's a European film, so it's not a typical Hollywood blockbuster. For that the viewer should go pick up "Hunt for Red October" or the new "U-571." This is a dark, brooding and not very happy film, yet extremely gripping. The performances were very good, especially Jurgen Prochnow's portrayal of the crusty, old guard submarine captiain, who is actually only about 30 years old. All in all, this movie comes highly recommended, and should be watched by anyone wanting a real idea of what life is like on a submarine, even one of our modern nuclear submarines.

Summary: Das Boot
Review: This is a splendid film. It is gripping and tense through out. I have only one complaint - DO NOT WATCH IT WITH A GERMAN IN THE ROOM! My other half is German and so we watched it in the original German, with English subtitles. Every two minutes "That's not what he said!", "That had nothing to do with what he actually said!)... and on and on. And the English language version - OH MY GOD! They seem to have been dubbed by cartoon characters! Despite all this don't be put off - you will love this film and the above annoyances are easily ignored when you get into it. Oh and one final thing - the director's commentary? Just say no.

Review: Outstanding film by Wolfgang Petersen about how tough and dangerous life aboard a U-Boat really was. The well written script is helped by exceptional performances by the actors and the climax will leave tears in your eyes.

Review: There is only one word to describe the excellence of this film, and I don't think I know what it is. Das Boot is surely the greatest submarine movie ever made in the history of film making. Incredibly realistic, good acting, high tense adventure, a non-stop thrill ride of the senses. Jurgen Prochnow places himself as one of the greatest actors in the world with his performance as the Captain of U-96. Based completly on a true story, I firmly beleive that this movie is not only the best submarine film, but quite possibly the greatest World War Two film ever made. It includes all aspects that make a good war movie what it is. Action, Passion, Compassion, Thrill, Horror, and Uncertainty. I strongly recomend this film to ANYONE.

Summary: Hey, The English Dubbed Version of Das Boot Ain't Bad
Review: After seeing this classic twice in its wide-screen, subtitled version in the past, I reluctantly rented the English dubbed version last night; it was the only version of Das Boot that was at my local video place, and I had to show it to a friend I had suggested it to. The English dubbed version of Das Boot has to be the best dubbing job I have ever seen. It's not perfect, but I haven't seen any other movie dubbing that does it better. If you absolutely have to see this movie in the English Dubbed version, I would still fully recommend it without cringing. Having said that, the thing that is much less bearable about the English Dubbed version of Das Boot (VHS) is that it is not in wide-screen format, which is a pitty. So if you have to decide on the English Dubbed version, do it knowing that it's still very good, but try to catch it again in its wide-screen German-yelling fullness sometime in the future :) Believe me, you won't remember that the movie was subtitled.
