Rating: Summary: We should all watch this again! Review: A movie about the founding of America. In light of recent events of terrorism, I wish they could re-release this one in the theaters worldwide, so all countries can see what we went through as a young nation. Back then, the war had a purpose, against a civilized opponet. Now, we face a new kind of war against a bunch of terrorist fanatics.
Rating: Summary: Another over dramatisation Review: Again we are hit with a movie that makes a convenient slant on history. This movie makes the British army out to be blithering idiots something far from the truth. This makes a potentially fantastic movie leaving you somewhat dissapointed when there was no need for it. Good acting Great story Good directing Idiot historian...
Rating: Summary: It could have been much better Review: You could sum this film up in five words. BRAVEHEART DOES THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. As a history buff and reenactor, the PATRIOT had it's moments, but it was overly long and inaccurate. At times it was silly and predictable. This film is a major improvement over earlier films that deal with the Revolution, but it still could have been better. Students of uniforms and period weaponry will notice quite a few inaccuracies. If you love Mel, go for it. If you love history, watch it at a friend's house, but don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable if Flawed Review: I have heard so much debate back and forth about The Patriot that I don't know where to start. While it is true that there are many historical inaccuracies in this film, and it does tend to have a strong anti-Brit feel, AND it runs way too long at over two hours, I can't help but love to watch this movie! It is one of the best depictions of the Revolutionary War era in recent times and I find the many horrifically realistic battle scenes fascinatingly re-watchable. And I love that tomahawk! Not since Last of the Mohicans have we seen a workout as when Benjamin Martin takes out half an infantry company with his trusty old tomahawk. While I too found it annoying that so many inaccuracies found their way into this Hollywoodized re-telling of an American legend, church burnings, free "slaves", and "Green" Dragoon coats aside, you can't help but love the scene where Martin dupes British General Lord Cornwallis out of hanging his militiamen or the over-the-top confrontation between Martin and dashing but villianous Colonel Tavington. There have been so many things said about the basis for Ben Martin (real-life South Carolina patriot Francis Marion) and Tavington that I found it amusing to read some of the comments below. Francis Marion was indeed a slave-owning southern plantation owner who fought Indians and was probably, like other men of his time, a racist bigot. Needless to say, the stories about his raping slave girls and hunting Indians for fun may be true, or may more likely be attributed to Revolutionary War era Tory propaganda that is passed off as fact even today. That is the wonder of history! We may never know what the real Marion was like as a man, but we do know that he fought to make this country a new nation. Colonel Tavington is of course based on British Colonel Banastre Tarleton who, while never massacring civilians or dying on the battlefield, did earn himself a nasty reputation as a butcher on the part of the rebels for his zeal in cutting down surrendering troops at Camden. If nothing else, I hope that this movie will at least inspire an interest in a great period of history and perhaps lead to even more enjoyable and accurate Revolutionary War movies.
Rating: Summary: More action than accuracy Review: The patriot is another huge scale, high budget film done by Mel Gibson. This movie is comparable to Braveheart because it seems that it uses the same type of formula Braveheart did. They just applied it to the Revolutionary War period of time. The movie (just like Braveheart) contains a good mix of action, battle scenes and compassion. This movie can be enjoyed by males and females alike. Beware.. this movie is not for Revolutionary War buffs. The historical innaccuracies will turn this enjoyable movie experience into a game that consists of picking out everything that is wrong. This alone will extinguish any entertainment value for that person and anybody watching it with them.
Rating: Summary: Almost Great Movie Review: The Patriot is a film that could have been great. Under direction of a Spielberg or even Gibson himself (we saw he could make good stuff with Braveheart), this film could have been something incredible. Yet the film is good nonetheless, it is the most intricately designed and beautifully shot war film since Glory. The portrayal of Revolutionary War combat is truly compelling and harrowing. The story is about a former soldier named Benjamin Martin, a man once noted for his fierceness in battle but has given up the life of a soldier. When his son Gabriel wants to fight with the Continentals, he resists, but soon they are fighting together after vicious Colonel Tavington kills one of his sons. The acting is uniformly good, with one exception. Gibson is good as the fierce Martin who wants to give up fighting, Jason Isaacs is over the top and brilliant as Tavington, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans may notice Rene Auberjonois as the preacher who decides to fight with Martin. Heath Ledger is the exception: he is essentially there to appeal to the teenage girl demographic. His performance as Gabriel is lukewarm, but he does have a few good moments. There are a couple of moments of comic relief in the film, and some nice symbolism and metaphors (the house at the end). Like I said at the beginning, though, this film could have been better. The revenge plot has been used to death, most notably in Gladiator. Yet this is the definitive Revolutionary Experience. It is a well-made, well-executed feel-good movie. -m-
Rating: Summary: This is also the title of a Steven Seagal movie... Review: Okay, The Patriot with Mel Gibson is better than The Patriot with Steven Seagal. But it is still pretty conventional. This film doesn't bring anything new and there is such a huge barrier between the good and bad guys. But, what is funny is how Mel Gibson is an animal one day, and a nice guy the next day. The special effects are pretty good, but this is a Blockbuster...so they had a big budget, and they did the same mistake than the awful Godzilla and the very boring Independence Day (and by the way, it's the same director in this one). This is a part of history that wants itself to be shown on a golden plate, but the bad quality of the script and directing make the plate cheaper. I compare this film to Braveheart a lot, and I realize how good Braveheart was, and how deceiving The Patriot is. It's the same kind of situation that brings the hero to react and create an army to destroy the bad guys and get back their freedom. Some scenes try to be pathetic, but Mel Gibson isn't convincing at all. The whole film seems like a modern reproduction of the old times because of the costumes that seem too clean, the backgrounds that don't put the viewer in a mood, etc. It all looks fake and superficial. Made in USA, as they say, and proud of it.
Rating: Summary: Overrated flag-waving actioner Review: Simple-minded and diagrammatically scripted, this is a story of an ex-soldier, a veteran of the French and Indian wars, during the eve of the American Revolution against Britain. The setting is South Carolina, 1776. After having proved himself in battle, Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, retires to a more placid life as a husband, father, teacher and farmer. Although initially reluctant in his support against British domination of the then Thirteen States, he is placed in a quandary by the killing of his son by British Redcoats. Swearing revenge, he enlists, forms a militia group and engages the British forces in a number of pitched battles, and eventually succeed in defeating the superior armies of the Green Dragoon. The main fault of this film is this: a historical episode is compressed into a formula of Hollywood action-man-style heroics, predictable (and truly unexceptionable) battle scenes and unabashed flag-waving. In terms of script, direction and acting, the film is poor. A third-rate reprisal of Mel Gibson's more accomplished historical epic "Braveheart".
Rating: Summary: More heart and plot than Braveheart Review: Mel gibson is possibly the greatest war movie actor of all time, having two incredibly well-made and popular films. This one, The Patriot, surpasses Braveheart in many ways. It is war time and Mel Gibson plays Benjamin Martin, who is a single father of seven children. Luckily for him, Benjamin only has one son fighting in the war, Gabriel (Heath Ledger). Benjamin, himself, refuses to fight this battle due to his devotion to his children and his past experiences that have made him famous throughout the land. But when Colonel Harry Burwell of the Continental Army murders his middle son, Benjamin is pulled into the war fighting with one goal: to find and kill the man who murdered his son. Commanding a fleet of men using 'un-gentlemanly' tactics, he turns the fate of the war around. With so much on the line and his oldest son fighting alongside him, Benjamin will fight the battle of his lifetime, not for country but for vengence. This is a must-see for any war movie fan, being both accurate and very well-scripted. The one thing that breaks this movie out of the war mold, though, is its incredible heart. The movie actually makes you feel for Mel Gibson's likeable and very intelligent character as he fights for the opportunity of retribution against his son's killer. More heart than Braveheart and more cleverness than any other war movie I've seen, this movie would make a great addtion to anyone's collection.
Rating: Summary: its a good film Review: This is a good film starring Mel Gibson. I have to admit that I am not the kind of person who is interested in War movie... but this one is exception..It shows us how people are willing to sacrifice everything to win their freedom... The Patriot is a good movie...the war theme is pretty cool although some parts are pretty bloody..its like another BraveHeart movie..only the timeline has changed a bit...
