Summary: Top Schlock
Review: This movie is about a bunch of snot-nosed brats who get airplanes, period. They have cute nicknames like "goose", "ace" and "chunk style" (okay, I made that last one up, but you get the point). Although these brats are supposed to be America's elite pilots they fly around whooping and treating our millitary's top aircraft as toys. Plot and tension are sacrificed to give you, well, more flying, whooping and grinning by the aformentioned brats. Oh yeah, there's dirty parts too. All in all, if real millitary pilots are anything like the yahoos in this movie we'll be in a lot of trouble when the next war starts.

Summary: Top Gun's the Best! :)
Review: Wow...what an awesome movie! Great footage of F-14's (a navy plane). If you like current military stuff and San Diego (and areas around it...) this movie is perfect for you!

Summary: The best pilot movie I have ever seen!
Review: I have that movie on DVD. On my TV screen it is just new. This is a decent movie to fly a plane. I like to ride it someday when I am older. And I like the songs that are in this movie.

Summary: TOP GUN is rock bottom
Review: All formula, from aerial shots (not any of which are impressive or original) to acting. I like Tom Cruise as an actor but he does not a thing for this atrocious, utterly predictable flying picture. A real crash for all concerned.

Summary: Great movie... BAD DVD!
Review: Ok the movie is so great... I liked the story that includes friendship, love and challange... the soundtrack is great as well. But what really bothers me is that this DVD has no extra's what so ever!!!!

If you love this movie, you better wait for another DVD edition to enjoy the extra's!

Summary: A disaster, and abomination in the world of art
Review: There are some directors who can take all the movie cliches and work them into a movie brilliantly. Those movies are always comedies, however, and are poking fun at directors and scriptwriters whose unceasing use of cliches brings the art of moviemaking down to a corrupt, base level. Top Gun is such a movie -filled throughout with cliché after cliché after cliché. I cannot remember anything in this movie that has a shred of originality in it. I give the director and writer credit for having discovered a way to create an entire film with only acting cliches, cinematic cliches, dialogue cliches, situation cliches, clothing cliches, stereotype cliches, relation cliches, you name it. Were this movie intended as a comedy, as it should be, it would be brilliant. Being that it is intended as a serious movie, however, I find the thing abhorrent and completely without merit, except the beautiful film work of the airplanes, which is itself yet another rehash of aerial filming cliches. Of all the really popular movies I don't like, this movie is always the first one I bring up when I am discussing just how horribly low, and how horribly in-search-of-a-dollar-and-damn-the-artistry that movie making can succumb. I can't think of any movie that has a greater ratio of pure-badness to sheer-popularity. It's like a Sheena Easton or Celine Dion CD.

"Take my breath away" as the main song? That should be proof enough for any serious thinking person to avoid this movie forever (except as study material for how to make a fully artless movie). Is that not the most bland, corporate produced song you've ever heard? No, wait - there was that God-awful Bryan Adams song in "Robin Hood", too.

This movie is simply proof that, if you write something really dumb, truly senseless, cliché-ridden, and have it acted really poorly, but have fast planes and a few flag waving moments, then bovine unthinking America will willingly burst their collective lungs running as fast as they can to give you money for it. Perhaps this movie should get five stars for being such a wonderful and obvious critique of how completely bland and tasteless the American movie-going public actually is. Except, of course, that the makers (as I mentioned) obviously weren't making a social critique with this movie (Americans will not pay money to be led in thought). The creators were simply tuned-in very well to what stupid people are willing to pay far too much money, and thus created, quite ironically I say, a movie with nothing in it that speaks of actually being creative.

If you're a person with a pre-adolescent sense of what love relationships are, an undeveloped sense of right and wrong, and/or an elementary-school level of ability to hold relationships with friends, then you will likely think the romance in this is great, and that the revenge part of it are great.

I hate this movie. I think I hate this movie more than any other movie out there (although there are worse-made films - Plan 9 from Mars comes to mind). I hate this movie so much for two reasons: 1) nothing in it is creative or original or thought out or interesting, 2) that fact that it is so popular speaks to me of how low the culture in my beloved country truly is. Now don't get me wrong - it's a heck of an enjoyable film, and very entertaining if you can stop your brain and your soul from being appalled. Please feel free to enjoy it, but please, people, stop calling it a good film, or "the best film", or that it "speaks so well about relationships and friendships" and realize that as an artistic creation, this is one of the most abominable films because of its absolute lack of integrity.

Summary: Great action... who cares about supposed "subplot?"
Review: One of the most exciting action flicks of the 80's, with great cinematography, music and love story. Much has been made about a possible "gay subplot" or that this movie appeals to gay men... if so, I don't understand what's the problem? I am a guy (straight as an arrow), and even if this is a movie appealing to gay men, I don't understand why that would be a concern unless you have a problem. The story is predictable but still involving, the cinematography is incredible (watch the colors of the sky, the night scenes and aerial sequences), the music is great, what more could you ask for in a movie? If you're looking for an arthouse film this may not appeal to you, I just have to say I enjoy this one tremendously. I also like the "artsier" films, as well as "thinkers" (Jacob's Ladder is a favorite), but do I have to be limited to one type of film? 5 stars!

Summary: Buy this one for the sound!
Review: Top Gun on DVD has no extras whatsoever, save for widescreen/standard versions. But the most incredible part is the SOUND. You will be shocked by how incredible the sound is coming from your speakers. You will feel like you are right outside the cockpits when the planes fly by the camera. Like other people, the McGillis/Cruise romance has no chemistry, but Meg Ryan and especially Anthony Edwards are great on screen. What really makes this a good movie is the aerial combat. If you have a DVD player and a digital sound system, you'll this in your collection! Be warned, though: You may feel the need to crank the volume all the way up causing hearing problems later on.

Summary: Not Worth It
Review: I really love this movie. I used to watch it when I was a kid. When i bought it on DVD, I expected it to be really great - high quality picture, explosive sound - but it really wasn't all that better than the original. The picture is similar to a VH Scan and the dialog was horrible. For the first half of the movie, none of the dialog matches the actors' lips. It seems like this imperfection could have been ameliorated in the editing room fairly easily. The sound effects and musical score redeem the movie to some extent, but the mismatched dialog is dificult to ignore. Maybee I'm just nitpicking here, but when I buy a DVD over cassette format, I expect a higher quality movie. I didn't get that with this DVD. My suggestion is to buy the cassette version and maybee save a couple of bucks.
