Summary: Before they were stars....
Review: I never liked this film that much back when it first came out, but my acting class teacher had a role in the film, so I watched the movie again to see him. "I want some butts!" Yep, that's him, alright. :DWatching this movie again still didn't make me like it, but I have to say that the aerial dogfight scenes are done amazingly well. I can't recall any other movie that captured aerial dogfights so well on the screen as this movie has. It does not look dated much at all, a quite remarkable feat. If there's anything that makes the movie look dated, then it's the leading lady's look and Kenny Loggins's rock music in the background. I can listen to "Danger Zone" only so many times, you know. ;) One cool thing about the movie was that I got to see some of the actors before they became hot commodities. I mean, I had totally forgotten that Meg Ryan was in this movie (as Goose's wife), and I had no idea Tim Robbins was in it either (try to spot him before the credits roll up). I think this movie is worth a watch just for that purpose alone. And if you're a fan of Tom Cruise and want to see the movie that pushed him up to his stardom, then hey, by all means check it out. Otherwise, I think this movie (and the DVD, which is quite bare-bones) is worth only a rental, which is what I did.

Review: First of all, nobody is obliged to produce a masterpiece every time one goes behind a camera. No. So, TOP GUN is not a masterpiece, but sure as hell it will give you good moments in a silly script. Cruise is doing what he knows best: false acting.

Review: Top Gun is one of those rare films that you can watch over and over again and never tire of it. Tom Cruise does a bang-up job as Maverick (Pete Mitchell), a renegade jet pilot with an attitude. The cast is amazing with Val Kilmer playing Mav's nemesis Iceman, while ER star Anthony Edwards plays Cruise's unforgettable sidekick Goose. The action sequences in Top Gun are nothing short of breathtaking and will motivate even the toughest cynic to watch and get involved. The production of Top Gun is so good that it could be released today and still be a huge hit. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer did their homework on this one and it shows. Do not hesitate to buy this DVD, this is the ultimate DVD movie and should be watched at maximum volume. Highly Recommended.

Summary: Good Enough to Be Entertaining
Review: "Top Gun" is one of the few action/romance movies that I like. I dislike the romantic scenes in "Top Gun" for the same reason that I dislike them in other movies of this genre, namely they feel forced and unimportant. However, "Top Gun" is able to overcome this defect with some tremendous action sequences. The plot of "Top Gun" is quite simple. LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has been picked to attend the Navy's fighter pilot school, Top Gun, at Edwards Air Force Base after the original choice, Cougar (John Stockwell), freezes at the controls during an encounter with some bogeys. Maverick's nickname fits him perfectly as he has a reputation of being a dangerous pilot. Maverick doesn't make friends easily with any of his colleagues at Top Gun. Nor do Maverick's instructors, CMDR Mike "Viper" Metcalf (Tom Skerritt) and LCDR Heatherly "Jester" (Michael Ironside), trust him. There is, of course, the obligatory gal pal, Charlotte Blackwood "Charlie" (Kelly McGillis), who is out of place in this movie and doesn't seem to like Maverick all that much even after they get together. Had the love interest been deleted, the movie would not have suffered anything except lack of length. When he's in the movie, Anthony Edwards, who plays Maverick's navigator, LT Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, steals the scenes. He plays the wisecracking crutch to Maverick's insecure bluster. It's Goose who provides the best non-flight scenes in the movie. Considering the amount of swill produced in the mid- to late-80s, "Top Gun" is nearly art. It's never going to be on any list of important American films; but, it does entertain for one hour and 40 minutes.

Review: although this movie, is without a doubt, the best movie ever made and is my personal favorite, it does have its flaws, just like any other movie though. even though i wasnt old enough to remember its release into theaters, i do remember my parents buying my the VHS version when i was young and playing it until the video tape actually broke in the VCR b/c it was played so many times. When i recently purchsed a DVD player, this movie was one of the first that i bought on the DVD format. hooking it up to my surround sound brings the planes, aircraft carrier, and fightertown usa into my room. some parts of the movie dont make much sense if you pay close attention and have any knowledge of this aircraft and how it is operated. the romance parts between cruise and his woman (forget her name) could have been left out for it didnt add much to this movie.

Summary: not so hot
Review: I watched this movie only to check out carrier operations because I got out of the Air Force before this movie came out. Hollywood makes entertainment movies, I havn't seen one movie where it said "warning this is exactly what happens in real life in every detail." You Navy guys shut up! You know us Air Force guys don't do nothing,all our maintenence is performed "mentally,we don't even have to go outside"! We had 2 tornadoes hit our base at the same time,we knew they were on the way-Oklahoma weather. To bad we couldn't put C-5's,C-141's @KC-135's below deck and turn the base to port side,we may have missed the tornadoes! The movie was entertainment but I would have used another actor instead of Tom Cruise, he doesn't come across to me as tough enough to be a pilot! Val Kilmer should have been the lead! You Navy guys both pilots and mechanics- An F-15 single seater has to do the same as a 2-seat Tomcat! My Air Force job if memory serves me correctly amounts to 3 different jobs in the Navy! But I say again you know us Air Force guys we don't do nothing we got it easy! Tom Cruise should have stayed hooked up with his risky business co-star, she's the coolest and hottest chick in Hollywood,did your mommy tell you to break it off? Jim.

Review: My Age: 15 It is My All-Time Number One Favorite Movie! I have that on DVD, it just like new on my television screen. If you like airplanes or other automobiles, then buy this on Video or DVD.

Summary: The Tarantino Perspective.
Review: Watch 'Sleep with Me' and you'll never see Top Gun the same again... Top Gun - on the surface, a militaristic, macho-adrenalin movie with the obligatory love interest. Pure Reagan-era Hollywood. But ONLY on the surface, that is. Read between the lines, as Tarantino did with such infamy, and you'll soon begin to see what's really going on in this film. If you don't see it, watch Sleep With Me, a 1994 movie in which Quentin Tarantino cameos (late-on) at a party and does little more than completely re-interpret Top Gun. It's funny, and probably spot-on. Just listen to Hollywood and Wolfman the first time we see them in the briefing room. If they're joking with their teasing, why is the joke private? Why is the love interest called 'Charlie'? Oh, that's right, because it's short for Charlotte. Of course. We also have the volleyball scene - with Kenny Loggins roaring over the soundtrack that 'after chasing sunsets, one of life's simple joys is playing with the boys' - and the shower scenes. And let's face it, the pilot/navigator relationship is a convenient way of displacing and therefore legitimising the homoeroticism inherent in such 'buddy' relationships. Not forgetting the final shot of the movie, with the boys flying off, loop the loop, into the sunset. And so on... Then when you've rewatched Top Gun, try watching Point Break, Batman Forever, and a few others like that. Regardless of your politics, Top Gun is a fun movie, one of those oh-so 80s films that defined their era - it's usually found in the same collection as Ferris Bueller, The Goonies, St.Elmo's Fire, Dirty Dancing and that sort of stuff.
