Rating: Summary: Two first-rate reenactments of Tennessee Civil War battles Review: After the successful reenactment of Pickett's Charge for the movie "Gettysburg," it was only a matter of time before someone took advantage of other such reenactments to put together some ambitious documentaries dealing with other Civil War battles. This first volume of "Historic Battles of the Civil War" was created exclusively for DVD, and has incredible scenes filmed simultaneously with five cameras. The result is that you have the feeling of watching images of the actual battles instead of Hollywood style versions. This first volume in what promises to be an exciting series offers two battles: "Chickamauga--High Tide in the West" covers the Confederacy's efforts to drive Federal troops out of Tennessee in early autumn of 1863, which climaxed in the Battle of Chickamauga. "The Tennessee Campaign of 1864--The Last Fight for Nashville," covers the Confederate attempt to recapture the Tennessee capitol. This particular episode features one of the largest battle reenactments ever filmed with 9,000 participants near Nashville. These first-rate documentaries have voice-over narration in the manner of the celebrated Civil War documentary by Ken Burns. This DVD also includes all of the Civil War music as a soundtrack album and archives of Civil War photographs. If you are a Civil War buff who loved the reenactment elements of "Gettysburg" and "Glory," then this DVD will provide you with two hours of similar fare. Whether you are watching the soldiers at camp or on the battlefield, you will find the "realism" compelling and you will eagerly await the next volumes in the series.
