Description:
The mysterious financial workings of the Nazis are the focus of the first episode on this DVD, from the Secrets of War series from the History Channel. As historians note in this presentation, representatives of Germany's central bank, the Reichsbank, closely followed the troops into occupied nations, including France, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Gold reserves of conquered countries were seized to help finance Hitler's further conquests, and as one expert notes, art treasures were scooped up in an "organized plunder." The documentary concludes that as some of the world's most brilliant bankers, including those at highly secretive Swiss banks, orchestrated the ransacking of Europe's wealth, we may never know the full extent of it. A second episode of Secrets of War features "Super Guns," an informative look at how, beginning with German efforts in World War I, engineers have sought to perfect artillery that could lob shells many dozens of miles. The history of exotic artillery is chronicled, from the famed "Big Bertha" cannons of the Great War to huge guns developed in the 1960s that were intended to put satellites into orbit. And a fascinating segment focuses on a massive cannon built on the slope of an Iraqi mountain by an eccentric Canadian engineer in the employ of Saddam Hussein. --Robert J. McNamara
