Description:

The ability of the Germans to brazenly innovate in their clandestine activities in World War I is effectively demonstrated in the first episode of the Secrets of War series from the History Channel on this DVD. Surprisingly, before the U.S. entered the war the Germans actually sent explosives to America on board a U-boat, which publicly docked in Baltimore, and German Americans were recruited to plant the bombs in an extensive sabotage campaign. Archival clips show dramatic results of German sabotage operations in America, which included the virtual destruction of an island in New York harbor. The malicious role of the German ambassador to the U.S. is also profiled, as are bizarre precursors to biological warfare in which German agents infected horses exported from the U.S. to the Allied armies in Europe. A second documentary provides a fascinating look at the cold war, with a particular focus on spectacularly dangerous weapons developed by both the Soviet Union and the United States. According to former Soviet officers interviewed on camera, the scientists in the Kremlin even proposed building a gigantic doomsday ship that would essentially be a floating nuclear bomb big enough to destroy the world. Though the most reckless period of the arms race occurred decades ago, it's chilling to see declassified footage of weapons experiments. --Robert J. McNamara
