Summary: funny comedy, so-so drama
Review: This flick really put Robin Williams on the map, and deservedly so- he's freakin' hilarious in this movie! Good acting jobs by all major roles; Forest Whitaker also does nicely as the "protege".

However, the fault of this movie is where it tries to be serious. Williams's politics are thinly veiled, as the only people who oppose anything he does (VC's, bully GI's, "the brass") are stereotypes. Nothing Haup or Dickerson say or do is ever pleasant or reflective of any redeeming qualities whatsoever. In addition, after picking oneself up from the floor from laughing at Williams's brilliant jokes, one can step back and understand (empathize?) why people might not have liked such comments as "If it's being done well, here or abroad, it's probably *not* being done by the U.S. Army!" Now, maybe that's true, maybe it's not, but a lot of people work (and worked) very hard to be sure that what the U.S. Army did is/was done well, and these people wouldn't be the jerks that Dickerson and Haup (sp?) are in this film if they took offense to a deejay like Williams's portrayal of Cronauer.

In short, watch this movie and enjoy the humor, but think twice before taking any sort of "deeper meaning" more seriously.

Summary: Institutional dependence
Review: This is a rather old film on the Vietnam War. It has aged. The denunciation of the censorship that existed in the US forces in Vietnam, is still efficient, but it deals with the past. The Vietnam War is finished. The humor about the ex-Vice-Président Nixon, is of course a lot less efficient today, because a lot of time has gone by. The vision of the war is still very mild, though it emphasizes, still, the fact that the Viet Congs were everywhere, and it states in a very few sentences the real motivations of these young people who joined the fight against the Americans : personal, victims all around them, and the fact that they were at home, and the Americans were not.

But the film has taken, since its first release, a completely new meaning, more allegoric but also tremendously strong. This time it has do only with the functioning of an institution, no matter which, that has to respect some norms coming from above and not from its audience, its public. It has to do with censorship and the desire and tendency of some people to refuse it in the name of the good old freedom of expression and of the press. Just this point, repeated quite many times, shows how strong such a functioning is. But the film delves into the human relations that come along with this general functioning. Those who detain authority in this institution feel frustrated by those who rebel against the censorship they try to impose. And it reveals that the former will try to do anything they can do get rid of the troublemaker : they will send him on an impossible and death-ridden mission, hoping he will be killed ; then they will build up a file trying to show that he is a traitor and has to be courtmartialed, and then they will condescendently move him out of the way with a nice speech on generosity, clemency and even compassion. This denunciation of this terroristic functioning of any institution, public or private, is still valid and full of relevence. On that level the film has not aged one single iota.

Summary: 5 star comedy, 3 star drama, 1 star dvd
Review: This is one of the funniest film ever. It is on the AFI's top 100 comedies, and Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up. The comedy is halarious, and I didn't agree at all with the review saying that "One star is too many. This movie was a vehicle for Williams' stand up routine, and nothing more. No acting, just Robin Williams schtick." I thought that this was a funnier military comedy than M*A*S*H, but not as great overall. I like it as much as I like Dr. Strangelove, but Duck Soup is better. I saw somebody reccomending "Full Metal Jacket" instead of Good Mornign Vietnam. Now, I like both of those, but the two are not to be compared. Good Morning Vietnam is very good at comedy but mediocre at drama. Full Metal Jacket is mediocre at comedy but very good at drama. All in All, FMJ may be a little better, but I don't see why there being compared. Robing Williams is just comedically brillant. As for the ddvd, the 5.1 sounded analogish, and had little separation. The picture was okay, no impovement over the LD, but a difference over TV and tape. Feel free to leave me a helpful/not helpful feedback. Thank you for taking the time to read this and God Bless America!

Summary: War is a crazy thing but, then, peace is just as crazy
Review: This movie possesses many of the aspects of the war's craziness.

Peace has seen Vietnam become the newest tourist mecca, attracting the *same* outsiders who were sent there involuntarily in the '60s and '70s.

The war was waged for "democracy". The peace is waged for that other Western icon--"free enterprise". This, to me, is crazy, but at least "free enterprise" isn't serving up the women and children as hamburger.

Summary: Classic Williams,.... Great Story....
Review: This review refers to "Good Morning Vietnam"(VHS/Touchstone)

The V.P., a V.I.P., the P.C., on the Q.T, the V.C, MIA and K.P.
Who else can take all these initials, string them into one sentence and have us in hysterics. Only Robin Williams. The one liners are fast and non stop. He's absolutely perfect as he portrays the real life Adrian Cronauer, an armed forces DJ who shakes things up a bit in Saigon 1965.

Cronauer is a hip DJ, who tries to the chagrin of his lieutanant, to bring a little fun into the lives of the weary soldiers in Viet Nam. He livens up the base and surrounding Saigon with funny characters, absurd news stories(the real ones are edited), and some Rock and Roll, as the Vietnam War occurs around them. The Lt. is more of a Lawrence Welk/Jim Nabors kind of a guy and is appalled at this DJ's style. But nothing can stop this wild and crazy guy from his mission. The script is rollicking good fun, and of course all that great music from the 60's is on tap. But there are poignant moments and a serious nature to this film as well. The war still goes on, and for the people of Saigon it is tragic. As Cronauer finds out when he befriends the townspeople.

Williams' immense talent explodes in this film. He is both funny and compassionate. But he is not alone in making this film the classic it has become. It is directed by the brillant Barry Levinson(Rain Man/The Natural),who always knows how to pull us into a story and keep us there. The supporting cast is marvelous and play right to Williams. It includes the wonderful character
actor Noble Willingham, Bruno Kirby,Forest Whitaker, Robert Wuhl and I must also make mention of Tung Thanh Tran, who plays Tuan/aka Phan Duc To.

A story of Vietnam like no other. It's one I can pull out and watch anytime without tiring of it. The VHS is a good quality. It has nice picture and hi-fi Stereo sound. It has closed captioned for hearing impaired as well. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it again, and remember why you liked it so much the first time around. For those that have not seen it, you
are in for a real treat.

Thanks and enjoy...Laurie
