Summary: A great movie
Review: This is the self-penned true story of the Dutch war hero Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, and his college friends from Leiden who endured the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and, who eventually, lived to see the Liberation. Some of his friends were not so lucky.

Summary: An okay movie
Review: This movie, in my opinion, is somewhat overrated. It's a bit too long and a little too underplotted to really qualify for the description of "great war movie."

The main problem that I had with it was that the Dutch Resistance didn't seem to amount to very much. They seemed to spend most of their time sneaking in and out of Holland, getting caught and tortured, and getting killed. I don't know if this is "true to life" but I would have liked to have seen a little more "derring do" in the film. For example, I think it would have been good to have shown the "Market-Garden" campaign from Rutger Hauer's point of view.

I do think that Hauer and the actor who played the German secret policeman did a very good job.

The bottom line for me is that this movie is perhaps a too realistic depiction of life in occupied Holland. In even the most exciting of times in any place, there is bound to be some boring "down time" and showing may be a nod toward realism, but it's not terribly involving.

Summary: is it history or hollywood?
Review: Who know? But it's a very well-done movie early in the careers of Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbe.

Summary: Verhoeven Never Ceases To Amaze
Review: Yet another amazing film from Paul Verhoeven with so much depth and weight I can't even tell you. Stays with you a long time after the film is over which many of his films have a tendency to do. Jeroen Krabbe gives an excellent performance as does Rutger Hauer in the leading role. Everything in this film is top notch particularly if you are in any way a fan of war films. So many great scenes (i.e. Alex and Eric's tango towards the end, "april fools day", vengeance on a bicycle, the beach scene and many many more.) See this as soon as possible. It would make a terrific double feature with the Young Lions.
