Summary: The next best thing to being there ..
Review: I first came upon The Travis Larson Band quite by accident. I had gone to see Ted Nugent at the California Mid State Fair a couple of years back, and as I understood it TLB were last minute replacing Lynryd Skynryd who had cancelled their appearance due to the death of their bass player. Always open to new artists, I was hoping for the best but wasn't expecting much more than filler for the main event.

Two songs in and I was hooked! Very technical, melodic, interesting music in the rock-fusion vein. Nothing of this caliber could exist on the central coast I thought, and I was surprised to find they called this area their home. Since that time I've logged numerous hours watching these talented musicians perform live in many different venues. This DVD encapsulates a Travis Larson Band experience nicely.

And that's what strikes me most about this music DVD- it's accuracy and realism. What you see on the screen is indeed what it's like to attend their performance in person. Guitarist Travis Larson, bassist Jennifer Young, and percussion maestro Dale Moon are amazing artists each in their own right. Put them together on a stage, and to invoke an over-used term, it's 'magic'. These people obviously love what they do, and the expression on their faces make this evident to even the most jaded of concert goer.

But the absolute best part of this DVD for me is the audio track where the three of them do voice-over commentary. It's interesting to gain an insight into what their personalities are like, and as expected they're humble and critical of themselves, yet amusing and informative. There are production issues you wouldn't even realize if they weren't called to your attention, but it really doesn't distract from the content at all. Great melodies, technical ability, wonderful musicality ' get this DVD (and their 2 CD's!) so you can say you were into the Travis Larson Band before they got big.

Summary: Outstanding Instrumental Rock/Fusion!!
Review: This is a fantastic DVD! TLB are an awesome mix of great chops, complicated but always interesting songs, superb interplay between the band members and always a great sense of melody. Remove the vocals from classic era Rush (farewell to kings - moving pictures) and throw it in a blender with the Dixie Dregs, Blow by Blow era Jeff Beck and early Joe Satriani, and you have some idea of what this band sounds like. Technical but emotional instrumental rock without over-the-top shredding. I have concert videos from several of the artists mentioned above, and these guys deserve a place with them - highest recommendation!
