Summary: If you loved Tron you will LOVE this DVD!
Review: I have been a fan of this movie ever since the early 80s. Not for the story, which I have to admit is not too good, but for the visuals. I first saw it in '83 or '84 on VHS and fell in love! I was an aspiring, teenage computer programmer at the time, and this movie showed me a world of technology that was beyond my dreams.I bought the older DVD a couple years ago, before I even had a player. It was not available in VHS. I was afraid it was going to go out of print (I was sure wrong about that). I got the 20th Anniversary edition a week ago, put in the Extras disc and was blown away right off the bat! There's an intro. to the DVD that runs through the real-world-to-computer-world transition, but it's not just a clip from the movie. The computer world was computer generated just for this DVD release, and it looks wonderful! The 3D menus on the Extras disc are like little Tron movies in and of themselves! Each time you pick an item off the main menu, you are taken (zoomed in) to a different part of the Tron world, where different things start happening, and then the submenu appears. A real treat! I spent hours going through the extras. There is so much! The 1-1/2 hour "Making Of Tron" documentary/interview with the creators and actors is great! It was made very recently, since someone makes reference to "the XBox" from Microsoft. It shows interviews with all of the creators and most of the main actors, at their current age. The ones I recall seeing were Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, Dan Shor, and Barnard Hughes. The exceptions I noticed were David Warner (who played Dillinger/Sark), and Peter Jurasik who had a brief role as "Crom." Remember, he's the guy who plays against Flynn in the Ring game. They don't appear in the interviews. I was happy to see that many of the extras I had heard existed on the LaserDisc edition (now out of print) were brought over, including the in-film audio commentary by the creators of Tron. On the movie disc, there is also a 3D computer generated intro. that's very neat (think ring game combined with Tron in the I/O tower), though not as engaging as the one on the Extras disc. The movie itself plays just fine on my Toshiba SD1700 DVD player, no pauses or quirks (though the back cover of the disc does warn about possible pauses due to the dual-layer print). The picture is crystal clear and the colors are vivid. The sound is great as well, THX Certified. All in all, I am SO glad I got this edition. Looking at the work that went into it, I can't help but think that a group of Tron fans at Disney made it. It made me fall in love with the movie all over again. If you loved Tron, you will love (and I mean luuuuv!) this DVD. THANK YOU DISNEY! It is MUCH better than the older 1998 DVD release, whose only extras were the theater trailer, and the French and Spanish language versions of the movie.

Summary: TRON FANS - REJOICE!
Review: I think I speak for every Tron fan out there when I say that this 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition is long overdue but most welcome! The only way you could improve upon this brilliant piece of work is to release it in a director's cut with DTS, but this still gets 5 stars in my book. For everyone's information, this is a 2-DVD set. First one contains the movie, complete with THX Optimizer. Second one could be entitled "Everything you ever wanted to know about Tron but were afraid to ask." It not only contains the deleted scenes, but it also contains storyboards, photo galleries, and an extensive "Making Of Tron" documentary with interviews. I learned a ton (or should I say Tron) of stuff out of that documentary, among which is the fact that Cindy Morgan still looks magnificent after all this time!
This DVD is a vast improvement over its DVD predecessor, being THX-certified with beautiful widescreen picture and rich 5.1 sound! Wendy Carlos's music score has never sounded better; I look forward to getting the CD soundtrack when it is released (again long overdue.)
When this movie came out, it quickly became my all-time favorite and to this day, it has stayed there. Thank you, Disney, for creating this 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition, and thank you to everyone (cast and crew) who helped make it a reality!

Summary: FUTURE'S NOT WHAT IT ONCE WAS
Review: Steve Lisberger's "TRON" ... is the first big studio feature film that utilized a majority of its screen time with computer generated and enhanced imagery. It ushered in an era of heightened visuals that continue today with near photorealism. This lavish two disc set includes just about everything that can be added to the simplistic story of a video-game geek (Jeff Bridges) and sidekick (Bruce Boxleitner), who enter the cyberworld to do battle with the Master Control Program that has a thing for terminating players. The digital domain of the story is only partially thought out and not fully actualized but has hints of a Matrix-like world dominated by HAL from Kubrick's "2001." Once in cyberspace, the black and white characters with their neon auras are soothing eye candy that belies the gloom of the alternate universe they inhabit. The bonus material includes director Lisberger's anecdotal commentary along with surprisingly detailed effects information from Richard Taylor and visual supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw. There's a fascinating 90 minute making of documentary, deleted scenes, alternate music, a still gallery, effects demo reels, storyboards and more. The futuristic story's ironically quaint by today's standards but still great looking fun for kids and first-timers.

Review: Disney was moving in a new direction of animation in 1982. What better vehicle to use but computers and the video game arena which was the rage of the early 80's. In 1982 CGI (Computer Generated Images) was the leading edge of computer technology and the video gamers were spending millions to play these images. TRON was and still is a timeless one of a kind "computer game fantasy" which allows us inside the world of the video game. To be controlled by the users (players) on the "Game Grid" of TRON. The 20th Anniversary TRON movie now in WideScreeen & Enhanced for 16:9 HDTV is spectacular. Even with todays video standards 1982's TRON holds its own. If you have a Progressive Scan ready (480p) TV and DVD Player with Component video then TRON is unbelievable to watch!!! Summary: Ejected Software Engineer Flynn (Jeff Bridges) using a company workstation, tries to illegally hack into his former employers (ENCOM) mainframe to retrieve his stolen game programs. The MCP (Master Control Program) detects his Clu program. Through the magic of fantasy Flynn is brought into the MCP to battle for his life on the "Game Grid". He meets the TRON program (a program made to defeat the MCP - played by Bruce Boxleitner) and together try to defeat the Master Control Program. The adventure is imaginative, colorful and amazing to watch. This is a one of a kind movie. There has been no other imitators or sequels made. It is a unique and spectacular visual experience to watch with an innovative sound track by Wendy Carlos. This is a classic Home Theatre movie to watch again & again. Enjoy.

Summary: This is it!
Review: I'm not sure where the really bad review came from, especially saying that it was dirty and severely artifacted for I did not experience any of that. I watched this on a ProScan DVD-player and HDTV (50") as well as a proper 5.1 setup and this movie was great! The colors are incredible (I wasn't expecting *that* good) and the sound was very well redone considering that this movie was not originally mixed for surround. The extras are very worthwhile and this IS what Disney should have released the first time around. DO NOT BUY the original DVD, GET THIS ONE!!!

Summary: Tron special edition glitch alert
Review: The Anniversary edition of Tron seems to have many problems beyond mine... When I put the first disc in my DVD, the menu is severely off center. You can hardly see the right hand options. It's a mess. The film itself looks fine and there weren't any placement issues on the second disc. I returned the disc to the retail store where I bought the disc and exchanged it for another copy and discovered the same menu mess. I plan on returning it for my money now and will check Amazon instead of the retail store I chose for future pressings of this Disney essential. Disney's DVD's sure are mixed bag of lousy and fantastic quality...

Summary: Do You Love Tron? - Then You Have to Have This!
Review: I was thrilled with all the extras you get for your twenty-five bucks. Six trailers, and 80-minute "making-of", tons of other interviews, and then the movie.... When I would watch this classic film on videocassette, my big gripe was always that the soundtrack was fuzzy; it was hard to understand what people were saying sometimes. Not here, though! Here the speech is crystal clear, and the picture is beautiful. If you're looking for a quality recording of this movie, this is it!

Summary: Still Visually Stunning; A Landmark
Review: Disney's TRON received mixed reaction when it debuted in 1982, but now it seems even more visually amazing than when it first appeared. The story is slight: when computer hacker Jeff Bridges attempts to access a computer system to find proof of theft, a self-aware master program responds by digitalizing him and transporting him into the computer itself. Once on the "other side of the screen," he finds himself embroiled in a conflict between programs personfied as humanoid beings, some of whom battle against the master program's control. TRON was possibly the first mainstream feature-length films to incorporate computer generated graphics; surprisingly, however, the film relies much more heavily upon various animation techniques that give the appearance of being computer generated. Much of the art concept was inspired by arcade games that were popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and as such some viewers accuse the film of being "primative" in design: after all, our ideas about computers and computer graphics have changed quite a lot in the past 30 years. But in fact, computer graphics have moved increasingly toward simulations of reality; the complete unreality of TRON is part of what makes the film both effective and enjoyable. TRON is visually fascinating, seemingly made with DVD in mind, and I found the DVD transfer quite good. The "anniversary" edition includes a second DVD with bonus material that ranges from a fairly lengthy "Making Of" documentary to storyboards and art designs; the "Making Of" is quite interesting and gives the viewer a good sense of the challenges the technicians faced in creating the film. Recommended.

Review: I just have a few things to say: #1. Amazon, you need to split the Tron DVD reviews up. The Tron (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (1982) is WAY better than the other DVD. #2. Wow! This Tron (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (1982)
is absolutely incredible. If you love movies about computers, and/or loved Tron you MUST get this. It's fantastic. It has two dvd's - one with the movie, and the other packed with features. #3. This is in reponse to the person who mentioned glitches. These glitches don't exist on my copy. And the movie is in Dolby Digital 5.1. When Saark gives his speech it pans from not only left to right but also to the rear - this may be why you felt it was muffled - if you don't have 4 speakers. You need a dolby decoder and set it to 2 speaker mix if you don't have the additional speakers. What's really cool is the Dolby Digital re-mix (?) from this DVD sounds better than most recent movies. #4. Again, Buy this DVD! You will not regret it. I don't know if a person can 'fall in love' with a DVD, but if it's possible, this is one the one for me! Tron is a timeless film and this Tron (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (1982) DVD makes it seem brand new. The graphics really aren't dated at all since it's all conceptualized in a computer world. The second DVD is worth the price alone with all the interesting Tron information and the complete making of.

Summary: A Classic
Review: In every sense of the word. I saw this movie when I was young and it always left an impression on me and I think is the reason I became so excited about Computers. Disney really outdoes themselves with this fantastic DVD set. Even though Disney is one of the "Late" developers in the DVD market, once they kicked in development they are top notch. Disney DVD's have been incredibly well packed with extras and this is just another example.
A great movie deserves a great DVD and Tron is defenitely both.
