Summary: Without doubt, the greatest batman movie of all time!
Review: When I saw Batman Beyond for the very first time, I concluded that it was good but nowhere near as dramatic or as exciting as the original 1992 Batman animated series, or Mask of the Phantasm for that matter. When I heard that the first ever Batman Beyond movie would feature the Joker's return, I anticipated the movie with high expectations. After I finished watching the film, I concluded that it was fatihful to most die-hard Batman fans, the holder of an amazingly engrossing storyline, fantastic action and mystery, the answerer of questions regarding the future Batman series, and in general, a brilliant movie.

I didn't know it at the time but the version of Return of the Joker i had watched was in fact the edited version. After hearing of the uncut version, I purchased the american DVD to discover what had been edited out. After watching the Uncut version, I immediatly discovered that this was more faithful to the Batman legend than the edited version of the film. The final battle between the Joker and Bruce Wayne is a lot more darker in this version, and how the Joker dies in this version is a lot more appropriate and makes Tim Drake's guilt a lot more understandable and convincing.

This is where Terry McGinnis (the future Batman) truly shines. He ultimately proves to his critics and his peers that he is worthy of the Dark Knight persona. He handles the situation with the Joker very seriously and proves once and for all that he IS Batman.

This movie portays the Joker at his absolute deadliest and once again proves how dark and sinister he is. The Joker has always been the most haunting figure in Bruce Wayne's life, and he certainly doesn't hold back in tormenting his arch-foe even more in this!

Will Friedle(Terry McGinnis/Batman) + Kevin Conroy(Bruce Wayne) voice their characters with supreme excellence but it's Mark Hamill who steals the show (as always) as the Joker. It's always hard to believe that it's Hamill who's voicing the Joker (mainly because he always does such a damn good job of voicng the character) but it is him.

In general, Return of the Joker has a great storyline, amazing animation, fantastic music and is quite easily better than all the live action Batman movies. The edited version is good but the unedited version is a million times better. The uncut version is even better than the legendary ace film known as Mask of the Phantasm, making Return of the Joker (uncut version) beyond a shadow of doubt, the greatest Batman film in existance.

The DVD has first class special features (trailers, documentry, character bios, audio commentry etc) making this an essential purchase for any die-hard Batman fan. If you have to get Return of the Joker, it just HAS to be the uncut version.

There's no contest.

Summary: Uncut AND Widescreen
Review: Here's something I never thot would happen. Warner released a safe and sanitized 'family' version of this movie on DVD in 2000 and fans freaked. Quite right as a lot of violence was taken out and alternate takes were used in other scenes. Warner were bombarded with petitions to release the original version and, whadya know, they did.

The Batman animated movies (and the TV series) have a zillion times the atmosphere and gothic pathos the last movies had. In fact, in comparison, the animated movies completely blow Batman Forever and Batman and Robin out of the water. I would like to see Batman Beyond back on the air or at least more animated movies of it. Perhaps one a year, like Warner do with Scooby Doo.

Plus it's an all round better DVD package than the first release, giving the movie the higher status it deserves. But here's the thing it's NOT 'full frame format'. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is presented here in 1.78:1 widescreen. For some reason it's not anamorphic tho. The soundtrack is Dolby 5.1 and it sounds terrific.

Summary: An Uncut version?
Review: So, I bought Return of the Joker some months ago and now, they released an uncut version? Tell you what, I'm tyred of the Uncut's versions, the extended versions, the remastered versions and so on. It's a steal of money. WB, I want my money back! It's like MS who release a poorly tested software, then, two months later, they released a new one and instead of replacing, they want that you buy the new. How dare? As for the movie, it's excelent, consistent plot, great animation and voices (just to say: no more live-actors movies please!) but, i felt kind of insulted on my intelligence when they deploy the way Joker remains young. A chip in Robin which allows him to transform? DNA manipulation? Well, but it's only a hole in a movie filled with great momentums, and I will not say nothing more.

Summary: Action-Packed and Disturbing
Review: I haven't seen the original version of Return of The Joker, so I have no idea what was or wasn't shown in that version, but I have to say that the uncut version is VERY disturbing.

The story revolves around the return of The Joker to the futuristic version of Gotham. He looks the same as he did 40 Years ago, when Batman saw him die. How he managed to return, and what he wants, constitutes the mystery that drives the movie.

Fans of the Batman Beyond show will love the film, and people like me (Who never warmed up to it), will find the story easy to jump into, with plenty of scenes with Bruce Wayne (The REAL Batman), and an extended flashback involving Batman, Batgirl, Robin, and The Joker. The flashback sequence was extremely disturbing, and does one of the best jobs I've ever seen, in ANY medium, of presenting the chilling depths of The Jokers's insanity. Definitely NOT something I expected from a "Kids" cartoon. The climactic revelation is handled very well, and the fight between Terry/Batman and The Joker is great.

The extras include animated character bios, a music video, creator audio track, animatic deleted scene (Which would have fit nicely into the movie, and would have added an extra layer of character development.), and trailers.

Batman fans who didn't care for the Batman Beyond TV series should check this out. It might just make a fan out of you.

Summary: RE: UNCUT VERSION..please read
Review: I found a bootleg of the uncut version a year ago & watched the cut and uncut versions back to back and I gotta tell ya, the differences are slight. When the Joker offs the Henry Rollins' voiced Bonk character, you see a little blood and you also get a glimpse of the Joker's home movies of the torture of Robin. Really, that's about it. It wasn't that much and didnt affect or take away from the story at all. I promise. Don't believe the people who were outraged and say that it changed the feel of the movie and what not because it's not true. The movie is quite dark regardless and the cuts take away about 2 percent. In fact, the casual viewer would be hard pressed to distinguish the two. What Paul Dini and Bruce Timm (the producers of the show) were really upset about is that they wrote and storyboarded a 84-90 minute version of the movie, because at the time it was thought it might be released theatrically, or at the very least put straight to video, which it was. They had to trim it to 74 minutes at the request of WB for some reason even though it was never intended for television airplay so there was no reason to allow for commercial breaks. If you listen to the audio commentary on the original DVD they stress how hard it was to trim the movie down & still keep the essence of the story and even include a storyboarded sequence that was never animated. The complaint wasnt about editing out a little gore, the complaint was chopping away 10% of the story. Please note, I am an adult fan of this series and a huge Batman animated fan in general and have been for 10 years. I was one of the infuriated geeks when I found out they edited/censored this movie. It's why I tracked down a bootleg to see what I was missing. Having seen it, and with a bit of hindsight, I personally feel this is all part of a hype machine from Warner Brothers and has been all along just to get you to buy it twice. Pretty lame. They're the ones who let it be known that it was edited and made a big deal of it. Lo and behold!! Here we are a year later and it's being re-released. They should have just released both initially--put the PG version on one side of the disc and the PG-13 version on the other and let parents decide what was appropraiate for their children and not offend or upset the adult fans of the show, which I can't stress enough, is at least 50% of this series' audience. What I'd really like to see are those 10 lost minutes. Anyway, I hope this was helpful to anyone considering this purchase. Take care.

Summary: Forget the "extras"...stick to the movie!
Review: ""Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" is an exciting addition to the ongoing saga of The Dark Knight. An older Bruce Wayne has passed the torch to Terry McGinnis but a dreaded nemesis (The Joker) has managed to return from the ashes and wreck havoc on the citizens of Gotham. With a crew of henchpersons, the Joker does not just plan to destroy Batman but he has fatal designs on the entire city.

As has been the case since the animated Batman took wing in the early 90's, the voiceover talent is incomparable. Kevin Conroy, Will Friedle, Mark Hamill, Dean Stockwell, Arleen Sorkin, and Angie Harmon bring their respective characters to brilliant life. They are truly deserving of awards for their effective deliveries.

Because of the mature subject matter of the film, it is not
recommended for anyone younger than ten. There are some scenes that, although an adult can explain them, are a bit too intense for small fry.

The DVD supplemental trappings are rather lackluster, especially the commentary by the animators.

In comparing the dialog with those of other DVD sets, the guys' reflections are quite dull and somewhat amateurish.

It's a good thing that they put together such a good movie.

They should leave the "chatting" part alone!

Summary: THE GRAND FINALE BATS GOES OUT ON TOP
Review: Return of the Joker is deserves better than the made for video release it got. The unofficial series finale of Batman Beyond and the entire Batman Animated Series, it should have been released in theatres. In this film, Terry McGuinness shows he truly has what it takes to be batman using all of the skills he learned from his mentor Bruce Wayne to solve the mystery of the Joker's return to life and Gotham city. The story is excellent and the mystery of the joker will leave you guessing until the end. I only WB hadn't editied this film; the original story was consistent with the Batman beyond TV series and explained things like bruce's limp, why the joker corpse was in the hole of the episocde "Joyride. Buy this and mask of the Phantasm. They're well worth the price.

Summary: Awesome.
Review: I was never a really big fan of the Batman Animated Series, but Batman Beyond really captivated me. Maybe because it is aimed at a more mature audience, hence the violence. This story offers another side of the Caped Crusader that you don't normally see. Highly recommended.
