Summary: Not Lord of the Rings but a decent Ancestor
Review: I'd not seen this film before, but happened to see it advertised with another I was purchasing, so I read it's "biography." The name of Director Ron Howard--Opie to those of us who grew up watching the Andy Griffith show--put the seal of approval on it as far as I was concerned, so even though I wasn't familiar with the work of any of the actors in it, I bought it. I wasn't disappointed either. The film is a charming confection of good and evil, fairies and witches (though I could have done without the slap stick brownies), dwarves and humans. Like the current film, Lord of the Rings, the scenery through which the hero and his human defender must travel to accomplish their mission is stunning. Like the Hobbit village the small town of the dwarves is a delightful world in miniature.

There is much for a child to learn--even the child in all of us--from the story, too: That those who are political leaders are not always right, that great moral courage knows no size restrictions, that doing the right thing is not always easy, that those who have done wicked things can see the light change their ways, but that some evil is unredeemable and always evil, that one can die even defending a good cause. It teaches us to give those who are physically and culturally different a chance; they may look and behave "odd" but they are often just like us. It teaches us too that there is magic in the world, and that the greatest magic is belief in oneself and in others. It's not Lord of the Rings perhaps, but it's certainly a decent ancestor to it. A nice film for all ages.

Summary: Winning formula!
Review: Take your basic good versus evil story, you know, the one where a prophesied infant's birth will bring peace and safety to the world; add in a nice set of plot twists, and you have Willow. Willow takes the simple story and makes it fresh and new by making the hero an very unlikely person ... a dwarfish farmer (the race is refered to as elvins in the movie). It has all of the great things (heroes, villans and magic) that you see a fantasy movie for, and wraps it up in a package that is a thoroughly enjoyable romp. My kids loved it except for the beginning where the evil queen was trying to find the promised child ... they said that was a little scary, and they are 11 and 12. [Just a note for you parents.]

Summary: Good
Review: This movie is a good movie. It has good sets and good special effects, although I think it needs a little help in the story department. This movie stars Val Kilmer and done by George Lucas. It was released in 1988 and made pretty good money and has become a cult classic. These movies have become popular again because of the recent surge in fantasy movies. If you like this movie try Legend(1985) or Labyrinth(1986) and the newer ones harry potter and Lord of The rings. my suggestion BUY IT!

Summary: This Movie, I Love It!
Review: Val Kilmer and the delightful Warwick Davis take us on a fantasy adventure that noone should ever forget. When Willow (Davis) happens to come upon a mystically sacred child, he finds out he must defend the child to help save her and all that is good from an evil sorceress bent on taking over the world by using the power of the child. Along his way, Willow encounters some interesting counterparts, including Madmartigan (Kilmer) who had been imprisoned for wrongdoing. What happens on Willow's adventure is something every fantasy film fan should enjoy.

Much like Legend, Labryinth, and The Goonies, I grew up with Willow being one of my favorite films. Willow has the special ability to make me return to my childhood and thoroughly enjoy it, no matter how many times I've watched it. My excitement when I found out Willow would be transferred to DVD was great! And I'm a satisfied customer after purchasing it. The video and audio transfers are wonderful. The picture makes the film even more colorful than I've ever seen. The Making Of . . . featurette is quiet entertaining, and it was awesome to see both Ron Howard and George Lucas working behind the scenes with the cast. The commentary with Warwick Davis is a good little listen, and the theatrical trailers and tv spots are neat to watch.

I was very very ecstatic about this Willow's DVD release. And even more ecstatic that all of my favorite 80 films are getting good DVD releases. I hope there's more to come.

Summary: Avoid this Turkey
Review: Willow was boring and cheesy when it came out and I can't imagine anyone but the biggest Val Kilmer fan in the world ever wanting to buy this flop. One of the other reviewers compares Willow to Star Wars. HAH! Not very likely! I think Howard The Duck would be a closer comparison.

Summary: If you have a personal DVD Collection this belongs in it.
Review: Willow was an unbeliveble movie in which George Lucas and Ron Howaard team up to make one of the best fantasy movies of probably the last 20 years; probably because it had a budget but whatever. If you ever played D&D or even know what it is, have children, or love a good movie at the very least rent it.

Summary: This movie does not work.
Review: Ron Howard;s effort to do a fantasy based movie largely never gets off the ground because of ineffective direction, weak story, not so great acting and the first of many recycled/ineffective music scores by James Horner.

Summary: It's FINALLY here!
Review: Willow is a fantastic movie, with everything that one could ever want: action, adventure, romance, comedy, special effects, and a nice happy ending. Val Kilmer does a great job as the rogue swordsman Madmardigan, and Warwick Davis (you know, Wicket the Ewok) was a fantastic hero.

I used to love this movie as a kid. Going back, I am kind of struck by how poor the special effects seem to my CGI-savvy eyes, but it was a ground-breaking film in its time (the morphing technique was developed specifically for this movie.) George Lucas made this film, and his special effects company (Industrial Light and Magic) worked on the effects, so you know that whatever you're seeing was the best available at the time.

The special edition DVD was definitely worth waiting for. Both featurettes on the making of Willow are worth watching, but one is significantly newer. Also, there is a full length commentary track by Warwick Davis. That makes the DVD infinitely more valuable than the video in my mind.
