Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Decent Introduction
Review: I saw this at Dollar Tree today, so I thought "Why not?" I'd never seen the 1940s Superman shorts before, so I decided to pick this disc up. There are 3 Superman shorts on this disc, each better than the previous. There's very little dialogue, and the narrator gets the bulk of it. Lois and Clark/Superman have most of the remaining lines. The other characters have fewer lines. The villains are never named, and they're always just plain bad. Superman is always good. Most of the 5 minutes of each story is taken up by fighting. Characters carry and use guns (something that, sadly, is not often allowed on cartoons today). Even Lois picks up a machine gun and fires at the bad guys when under attack! Superman always has to save Lois, and the stories always end with Clark complimenting Lois on her latest article. I find the scant dialogue somewhat refreshing, because it leaves it to the picture, music, and sound effects to tell the bulk of the story. Don't expect anything great here by today's standards, but the cartoons were great at the time. The remainder of the disc's 90 minutes is taken up by skippable Fraidy Cat cartoons, which may or may not entertain little children. Overall, this disc is a decent introduction to the 1940 Superman cartoons - useful for deciding whether you want to get the complete collection or not. 3 episodes for a dirt cheap price - you can't beat a deal like that.
