Summary: So far from the original movie
Review: Everyone has a right to their opinion, so here is mine. First I would like to say that I AM A VERY, VERY OPEN MINDED PERSON and look at all movies in that way, but this one......I bought this movie on the basis of the first movie, which was cute and the idea's were so original and the animals took on a life of their own. Babe In The City to me was not a childrens movie and should not even be associated with the first. This is the first movie that I've ever bought for my child that I've wanted to grab and return it to the movie maker. The movie was very upsetting to both myself and my husband, our mouths hung to the floor in some scenes that were just horrible. For example: The dog hanging from the bridge by a rope with his head in the water and struggling to get free, let alone trying to breathe in WATER. I would like to just say, don't let children of any age watch this, it would scare them. To me it was a very dark movie and should not be even remotely associated with the first movie. Thank You

Summary: Remarkable
Review: I can understand the reservations of many of the 'reviewers' below. Think of 'The Wizard of Oz': a mean old lady steals a dog, a girl runs away from home, a tornado blows through a farm and the girl cannot reach shelter before the funnel cloud strikes, a house falls on a witch, a scarecrow has its stuffing yanked out by flying monkeys, etc. For a child, these are scary, almost shocking images. But they are redeemed by a story and by storytelling that engages them and teaches them lessons about courage, intelligence, and charity. This sequel to 'Babe' follows a similar arc: bad things happen throughout the film, and unpleasant characters abound. But virtually every charcter, human or animal, is affected by the courage, the caring, and the perseverance shown by the young pig. And the filmmaking is so amazing that you cannot stop watching. The choreography of the animals, the creation of a city skyline borrowing from Sydney, New York, San Francisco, London, and more, the comic relief of Ferdinand the duck, and the rescue of the captured animals are all elements that are astonishing. Hey, for some people 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is inappropriate for children because a rabid dog is killed on-screen. If that is your view (and I'm not disparaging it), then this film is not for you. But 'Babe: Pig in the City' is a film of tremendous imagination, humor, and sympathy. It is an outstanding movie, on every level. If you didn't like it, I'd recommend watching it again. It is rewarding and remarkable. If you haven't seen it yet, the series of reviews seen here must make it confusing. But it's important to recognize that these opinions indicate a film capable of eliciting very strong emotions, because it makes such an impression. I totally recommend this film.

Review: People who thought this was too violent and scary don't get to the movies much. I thought this was as good as the original--and different as well. Okay for children. I've seen lots worse on Saturday tv. A worthwhile watch.

Summary: A bit scary? OK -- and it's a great film
Review: I've grown weary of angry parents condemning this wonderful film because it was too frightening for their children. "Babe: Pig in the City" is a masterpiece, full of wonderful imagery and heart. While I agree that some of scenes may be frightening for the very young, I have to ask: what's wrong with that? Do not forget that every one of these "scary" scenes serves a purpose in the film's themes and in the development of its characters. Unlike most films geared at children these days, the lessons in "Babe - Pig in the City" are not easily learned. Just as in life, these lessons can be scary -- just as change is frightening for us all. Each of these pieces finds its way into the experiences that help Babe grow -- and develop respect for creatures different than he. That's a lesson with weight, and when it happens in the film, it means something. I'm 32, but I remember films that stood out to me as a kid -- and they weren't ones that were safe, easy crowd-pleasers. They were the ones that challenged me, made me think, and yes, sometimes scared me...but they were ultimately the ones that had things to say about the world. Siskel & Ebert called it correctly: "Babe - Pig in the City" was one of last year's very best films.

Summary: Babe--Great, Babe 2--Stunk!
Review: It is no wonder that the unique, original Babe was nominated for Best Picture; however the sequel is nothing short of ghastly! It had its entertaining and even funny moments, and the pig himself was as cute and adorable as ever, BUT this did not redeem the overall film from being trash. It's been said by many that it is "dark", and so it is. There are plenty of "dark" movies that are still of very good production quality, and very watchable (just look at Citizen Kane), but this one is supposed to be a family or kids film! Babe 2 is so bad that even my kids didn't care for it and they really enjoyed the first Babe, as I did. The "story" seemed very nearly pointless and I had to keep reminding myself that Mrs. Hoggett had to somehow get money to keep their farm--this was supposed to be the original "point" wasn't it? It got lost in the treachery, violence, and downright silliness (Mrs. Hoggett blown up like a balloon and swinging from the ceiling!--and it went on and on--that one dopey scene!) I'm glad it was a free rental from Blockbuster!

Summary: As Good, if not Better, than the Original
Review: I was surprised at all the negative reactions to this movie. It's every bit as charming and sweet as the first movie. I applaud the makers for not repeating the format of the first; another easily triumphant ending would make this a mockery, another Rocky series. As to the charges of the movie being too dark, I seem to remember being exposed to a rather dark book as I grew up. Once a week my family would immerse me in studying a text filled with murder, incest, rape, genocide, and other assorted crimes and misdemeanors. Of course, the true value of the Bible is that its morality supercedes all the aforementioned, in effect overcoming them with the all-encompassing power of its goodness and virtue. A little of that happens here, where the pig betters a harsh and uncaring world with his inner virtue. If someone thinks that this is bad for kids, then maybe they should rethink the whole notion of parenthood.

Review: Let me start by saying that Babe is in my top 3 list of favorite movies of all time. THIS movie, however, is DEAD LAST. I was thoroughly disgusted by this shockingly violent movie. James Cromwell (Farmer Hoggett) blew off criticism by saying "the first movie had a dark side as well". This is a movie that should never had been made. Babe was a beatiful movie which was at times bittersweet. Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange was less shocking than this movie, and yet they still target it at children? Disgusting.

Summary: Good for adults AND kids!
Review: This movie is FINE for children. You don't give kids enough credit if you want to "shield" them from anything outside of Sesame Street. Kids are tougher than you think and if you want to keep them in the womb for 18 years, you are doing them a dis-service. Excellent movie with many excellent lessons to be learned.
