Summary: Luck of the Draw
Review: This video will either be a great hit, or it won't. When I first put the video in the VCR I geared up for a disappointment - I think this was filmed in the 80s, and the production quality is on the low side...but I was surprised! My 2 year-old absolutely adored it, and he didn't care that it looked home-made. And, best of all, I didn't find it irritating. Hap Palmer has a smooth, enjoyable voice, and his songs are homey and easy to sing along with. I get a real kick out of some of the lyrics he sings without busting out laughing! Can you imagine standing with a guitar and singing "I have a little potty of my very own, it has a yellow duckie to hold on to," without laughing? Good for him.

My son will put this video in the VCR by himself. And if I put it in, he will stop what he's doing and settle down to watch. It's a perfect length at just about 30 minutes, and the animated segments in between songs are well done and your little one will be able to identify them. I think the worst segment on the video is the last, which uses a really hokey marionnette sequence - talk about piles of fishing line all over the screen! The song is OK, so I just shut my eyes or walk out of the room for that one :-)

But on the whole, it's surprisingly good enough and engaging enough that I'd have no problem expanding my Hap Palmer library. It just goes to show you that often simple IS best.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: We bought Baby Songs and one other video for our son when he was 4 months old hoping to find something that would hold his attention. By pure accident ~ we got lucky! The other video has been played for our son once, but at 11 months, he's nearly worn this one thin. Whenever we put in the video he immediately stops what he's doing and watches it from start to finish (usually twice). Not only is it entertaining, it also helps us parents when we need a break or when he gets fussy. We were thrilled to find a whole series of Baby Song videos and plan on buying them all for his first birthday. Hap Palmer is a godsend.

Summary: ordering another copy
Review: We bought this video for our first of five children in 1986. It was an immediate favorite. We sang "My mommy comes back" every day going to preschool. I have to order a new one because our last child missed out- we actually wore the video out from playing it too often.

Summary: Not just for babies!
Review: We got this video when my firstborn was 9 months old or so and she loved it then. She's now 5, and my son is 3, and they STILL enjoy it. I highly recommend it because the songs are soothing and peaceful, and because my children have not outgrown it or become bored with it in 4 years.

Summary: The All-Time BEST
Review: When all else fails, we return to Hap Palmer's original Baby Songs. My granddaughter, adopted from China in 2001, took to it first and, 18 months later, still favors it. The downside? I find myself singing under my breath at odd times of the day, and sometimes in foreign cities, "Piggy Toes," "My Mommy Comes Back," and "Please Don't Wash My Blanket Today." I worry that the high price now listed for the video means that it is no longer "in print."
