Summary: Why did this movie get such poor reviews?
Review: I guess this reminds me of another Mike Meyer's film that was received as well by the critics called "So I Married an Axe Murderer." Cat is hilarious and visually interesting enough to watch over and over. One of the most inetersting thing about the DVD though is that on the Director's Commentary, Bo Welch didn't have much to say about Mike Meyer's performamce which is really the highlight of the entire movie. There is some adult humor, but what kids film doesn't have that anymore. I say cult classic as well, and as for the critics..."harumpf."

Summary: Annoying YES, Funny NO...
Review: I thought if How the Grinch Stole Christmas was good this would be as well. What a disappointment! I kept wondering what kind of drugs the people associated with this film were taking because it was trash!
The characters showed little emotion or personality and the Cat annoyed the heck out of everyone. If he wasn't trying to joke he was being crude with his butt crack and atomic burp. And what ever happened to the rhyming? There was very little of that. Then there was the club scene with Paris Hilton. What was that all about?!
A few times I swear I was listening to Austin Powers.

It wasn't a fun time at all. It was just plain stupid!

Summary: The Book is Better
Review: I rented this video for a fun little movie that didn't require a lot of attention. Good thing I wasn't paying 100% attention to it, because then I would have felt like I wasted an hour and a half of my day.

Even though it's a children's story...the book is still better. Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin do a fine job in the movie, but the rest of the cast is not that great at all. Alec Baldwin is disgusting as the evil boyfriend. Mike Myers can't hold a candle to Jim Carrey's version of the Grinch. He uses strange voices that don't work for me. In another review someone said he sounded like the cowardly lion and I agree.

It just wasn't funny to me. Colorful and Suessical in some senses, but just not funny.

Summary: Not funny, just weird.
Review: This film was just strange. The colors were visually disturbing. Mike Meyers had a bizarre accent which was a cross between the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz and Austin Powers. It grated on my nerves.

Our six year old did not laugh. We had a chuckle or two. But the plot was thin and went off on tangents. Alec Baldwin was wasted in the role of the evil boyfriend.

The Cat's antics were silly and the kids just stared at him woodenly.

Someone obviously paid these "stars" a truckload of money to make this awful and disjointed and disappointing film.

Summary: Austin Powers Meets Dr. Seuss
Review: How could anyone NOT like this film? It is colorful. witty, and incredibly entertaining. Kids love it because it's fast paced and "silly" ... adults love it for the celebrity cameos and "smart" humor (whatever that means). For those who like to "light up" and watch cartoons, this movie is highly recommended. All other viewers may want to try renting it first.

Summary: Disappointed Outcome
Review: When the commercial for this movie first came to my screen I was pretty excited. I plan the movie to be as successful if not more successful than "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", which is another film made from the Dr.Seuss classics.

I waited until the movie came out on VHS a couple of days before renting this movie and I have to say, the movie was very disappointing. Seemingly made for the kiddies, it seems to me that directors simply didn't have a break through or an eye opener during the making of this movie. The graphics aren't utilized to its extent, rather, just to add a little extra to the movie. Its like old classic Chinese fighting series where they first grasp the technology. An mere experiment, nothing serious. A movie which should have went straight to VHS and didn't deserve the spotlights of the theater.

The plot was way too straight forward and predictable, therefore making it uninteresting. The Cat and the kids were just simply characterless in my opinion. The Cat being just goofy and annoying, while the kids seem like any other kids you've ever seen. Nothing what it should be, nothing really "unique" or much of an "originality" from the rest. The jokes played in the movie was very childish as well and appeals, therefore, to the younger audience in the most part.

What adds to the nightmare is the fact that the scenary wasn't well thought up of and things aren't nearly as creative as "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". The houses were ordinary houses, cars are a little futuristic, and the trees, nothing extra ordinary. Viewers be around ages 1-8? Thats all I got to say, nice day everyone.

Summary: Funny, in a simpsons kind of way
Review: Up until now I had avoided this movie like the plague. It was aweful (said just about everybody). So, with the lowest of expectations, I gave in and gave it a try.

Boy was I wrong! This movie was hilarious! I think a kid will enjoy this movie for all the zany sounds and hyper-activity, but I really don't think they'll "get-it". Kind of like the simpsons. Kids can laugh at Homer getting a plunger stuck on his face, but to really get the jokes, to really appreciate them, to see the dark subtle humor, you have to be an adult. So, although kids will laugh, only the adults truely understand the jokes, and the adults will laugh, I laughed very VERY hard at times.

Sure, sometimes it was just plain stupid, but that made it funny also! Like there wasn't anything that just wasn't plain stupid in the Ace Ventura movies? But they were hilariously stupid!

People, lighten up. You can't tell me you hated the entire thing? Geez.

Summary: Crude cat...
Review: I'm a marginal fan of Seuss' work. I didn't exactly "grow up" with his books as a lot of people did, but I am familiar with them. And I absolutely love the animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." So, where in the heck is this onslaught of bastardizing his work coming from? First we get the disappointing live-action "Grinch" and now this? Hollywood's soul is not amongst the righteous.

I'm a big fan of Bo Welch's design work, but his leap into the directing field was a lousy effort. The sets certainly look great, as do the characters and make-up, but that's where the buck stops. The movie finds it's style in frantic camera movement and editing (just like "the Grinch" movie). And the humor is sophomorically dumb. I don't recall seeing the Cat's butt-crack in the Seuss book, but it shows up in this film.

I understand that if Hollywood is going to make a big thing out of a little thing, they're going to have to take some liberties and make up some tricks of their own. But do they have to be so crude about it? If you're going to inject such lazy humor into a classic story, don't attempt to do the classic story at all. I'm not a prude or anything, but these are supposed to be children's movies for God's sake. What has happened to the movie industry? The only quality kids' movies out there that have been made in the last few years are the Pixar films and a handful of other animated features. This movie SHOULD have been great entertainment for kids, but we as adults know that the writers could have easily made this movie funny without resorting to slack-off bathroom humor.

Mike Myers is okay as the Cat, but he can be pretty annoying. Seems like he integrates most every character he's ever played on SNL or in the movies, but none more than the lady from "Coffee Talk," which gets irritating REAL fast. The little boy in the film comes off as just a bit smarmy, but the girl is cute. Thing One and Thing Two are a hoot. A hoot, I say. A hoot to boot.

Forgive that poor attempt at Seussical rhyming. Overall, the bad points outweigh the good points in this movie. Frankly, it makes the live-action "Grinch" look like a masterpiece, and that's a hard thing to do.(...)
