Summary: Turn Out the Lights, Make Some Popcorn...
Review: No, this isn't the greatest sci-fi movie you'll ever see... actually it's more of a horror story.., it doesn't raise any interesting moral issues, and it's not wildly innovative. It has a basic plot - a passenger ship crash lands on a desert-type planet, the survivors squabble, there's an eclipse, the survivors squabble, nasty thingies come out of the dark and try to eat 'em, the survivors squabble... The big surprise here is that it works quite well. It's all very atmospheric, the special effects are good, the gruesomeness is more suggested than seen, which adds to the suspense, the characters are slightly different enough to avoid the stereotypes they at first appear to be, and there's even character development. I figure it works because it's exactly what it set out to be - scary and entertaining.

Summary: Formula, predictable, and yet fun to watch
Review: You do not want to know too much about this movie ahead of time as the few places that are not predictable is all it has. Here is all the standards, space rocks break ship, crashing decisions, survival of the ditziest. Throw in a few bugs-bats, other obscure toothy critters, and stick your head in a hole. To make this movie unique and give it a name you throw in "Pitch Black" darkness caused by (watch the movie and find out.).

Not to sound snide, you can tell that a lot of time and money went into the project. They had to pick exotic Australian locations for the planet scene (thank goodness it was not Mars again). Those Vin Diesel eyes were experimental designed metal contacts. The orrery was a cute touch mixed with the otherwise hi-tech atmosphere. There is lots of action and even the obligatory waiting to be surprised did not drag out.

Summary: Mixed reaction
Review: I rented this movie after hearing it was one of the better sci-fi films made recently, along with a pretty decent horror backdrop. Also, with Vin Diesel starring in this movie, I wanted to see it, just because he did a great job in 'Saving Private Ryan'. Apparently this was a low budget science fiction movie, and it was quite noticeable. Although the special effects were good, they were nowhere near the standards of 'The Mummy' or 'The Phantom Menace'. But don't get me wrong, they worked good enough to make me want to keep watching.

I enjoyed the story in 'Pitch Black'. It basically revolves around a ship that crashes onto another planet right before a solar eclipse. To escape safely, they must power up another ship before they are attacked and killed by "creatures of the night". Vin Diesel plays a murderer who can see through the darkness and is forced to guide their way.

So far this sounds good, eh? Well, then why did I give it three stars only? Because of this, of course: as an aspiring director/screenwriter, I felt the script was kind of weak, and could've been better. The film seemed to drag on at points as they went back and forth through the desert, and something bothered me about the lighting. I assume it was done purposely--just as the picture was darkened in Tim Burton's 'Sleepy Hollow'--but it didn't look good to me. All in all, if the script would've been stronger and some scenes shortened, this movie would easily earn four stars. Rent this at least once and decide for yourself if you like it or not, but don't expect the next 'Alien', 'cause you're not gonna find it.

Summary: A solid sci-fi/horror flick
Review: "Pitch Black," about a stranded group of space travelers threatened by voracious alien monsters, is an entertaining thriller. True, it's not the most original film: elements of this story are reminiscent of such past films as "Aliens." But solid direction, performances, and special effects make this an above-average film of its genre. The ominous, threatening atmosphere is greatly enhanced by some outstanding cinematography. And Vin Diesel delivers a memorable performance as a criminal who is stranded with the rest. If you like sci-fi thrillers, I recommend "Pitch Black."

Summary: This will make you afraid of the dark...again.
Review: Special effects are excellent! Great actors, and a good story. This is Vin Diesel's breakout role! As for the DVD, it's got great sound (5 stars) and excellent picture quality (5 stars)

Summary: The special effects were cool...
Review: And that was about it. The first hour was filled with talking about the research team that landed on the planet. When the aliens attacked, they did things that any idiot would never do and they just died. The only character that I actually liked was the one who had the weird eyes (the killer). The creators also didn't put into account that the aliens were hurt by light. Only once did the light bother them, and that one was already dead. The only reason that I gave this 2 stars was because the special effects saved it. The rest was stupid. My suggestion is to never see this movie...ever.

Summary: Are you afraid of the dark..?
Review: What can I say about a movie that has everything. Great actors, excellent visual effects,a scary but interesting plot and science fiction. This movie is great. Vin Diesel just won it all with this movie. If you like something that will keep you glued to your TV, buy this movie because is really enjoyable. There is something that I didn't like about Pitch Black and is the fact that Fry(Radha Mitchell), the ship's pilot, has excellent survival skill, she risks her life to save the people on her ship, she never gives up, when everyone wants just to wait there until the light end and die, she has hope and wants to do every thing she can to save them. All that,is useless for her in the end.She just die. I don't think for that fact I should give this movie a lower credit because it's not fair. This movie is excellent and if you watch it closely, you will notice the real purpose of it. My favorite quote is when Riddick says: " What are you afraid of..? The fact that you don't see what's eating you?"

Summary: Pitch Black
Review: The horror genre was thought to have died a well deserved death. The Freddy and Jason movies had driven the genre into the ground and present horrow films have been very lackluster. Pitch Black and Final Destination have been brought respect back to the genre. Pitch Black is an amazing film. It is more than just an Alien-CLone. The movie has a very smart script and dialogue. The characters are not cardboard creations. They are real people with emotions and fears. The creatures are scary, but it is the people and their secrets that make this film truly frightning. Vin Diesel is fantastic as Riddick. HE MAKES THE MOVIE COME ALIVE AND IS A MENACING CHARACTER. Nevertheless, Riddick is not what he seams, as are many of the characters. I highly recomend Pitch Black. It is a wonderful suprise and brings life back the horror genre.

Summary: This proves once and for all!
Review: Over the years and somewhere along the line, directors thought that "showing it all" to the people in a theater was the way to go....not true! Pitch Black is one movie for the records...in horror that is. I read the book first and then saw the movie-it does stay quite close to how the book is written(much to my amazement). Let's face facts-it is a horror movie...so yes, there is some blood, harsh language, and some graphic violence-but most of this is left up to whatever the person wishes to imagine...which for many horror films is a whole new concept! Just the thought of what one of these "lovely" critters do is enough to leave most cringing inside themselves...not to mention wanting to know what comes next-or who is next! Many of the actors are very good at their roles in the movie, and the computer graphics alone is enough reason to not only purchase-but see this movie as well. Vin Diesel does an outstanding job at convincing you that he is one person that should never be trusted, and then by the end-not only do you end up trusting him~but also cheering him on.

Summary: why didn't anyone see this in the theaters?
Review: this is the first sci-fi movie that compares to Alien. I was overly impressed with this flick. Except for Vin Disel, all the other actors are virtually nobodies, which helps you stayed focus on the plot and visual effects, just like Alien. I did not expect to photography to be as stunning as it was. The use of color was sharp. The DVD preseves this movie and makes you feel like you didn't miss this one in the theaters. The extras could have been a little better, but i've yet to see a dvd utilize the extras. By all means buy this movie. This is the perfect movie to test your new Dvd system and surround sound.
