Summary: Keep an open mind
Review: I'm a little weary from reading these other reviews. I didn't love this movie but I didn't hate it either. I liked it because the special effects were decent, particularly the eclipse scene, and the opening scene is pretty cool too. I thought Frye was pretty cute and the australian actors were a nice touch. There are some definite tense moments as well as a couple of "what the hell are they doing?" moments. The direction is very fast and stylish. There's one moment where I wanted to just smack the director because of just a bit too much flash but it was only once and fairly early in the movie. Cole Hauser who also played in Dazed and Confused was pretty cool. The aliens were a little too easily discernable as computer generated but frightening nonetheless. And there was an interesting twist at the end that left me a little disappointed but what are ya gonna do? Ultimately, I'd recommend this to rent for sci-fi fans but don't buy it until you've seen it. I'll probably buy it because it has some nice scary moments. Not scary to me but scary to most of the women I would watch this with. (:

Summary: The BEST sci-fi movie that I have seen
Review: This movie is my favorite sci-fi movie that I have ever seen and is my sixth favorite movie of all time. The special effects are completely tight. The plot is that these people crash onto a planet and they have to get off. The only problem is that there is an escaped convict in their group and there is a solar eclipse coming, thats when the creatures come out. This is a must-see for any sci-fi/creature/alien movie fan.

Summary: I might give it a try in the future
Review: I wanted to see this movie when it was released in the theaters. I am glad that I missed this opportunity and that I am only out the price of a movie rental. I had heard that it was scary and a very good movie, but it was quite predictable... Just like other sci-fi movies (supernova) we start out with a spaceship drifting through space... boring. a meteor shower... boring then the landing on the planet. With characters that you would hope to leave deserted on this planet, which by the way, has oxygen to breathe! What luck! The dialogue is very monotone and the story takes forever to get anywhere. I shouldn't be so hard, but I would have to agree with my wife on this one. 5 minutes into the movie and every minute after that she kept repeating, "This is boring! This is dumb!" And it's true, it never gets exciting, just predictable. If you are going to make a Space movie, you are going to have establish some sort of excitement in the opening scene. We had to shut it off about 30 minutes into it because it was just unbearable! I might give it a try in the future after I've watched 2001 20 times in a row! Now there's a movie that's a waste of time!!!

Summary: are YOU afraid of the dark?
Review: Pitch black is easily one of my favourite sci fi films, as it combines more than just the typical 'kill/run from the aliens' scenario, it actually has good characters, and a few surprises. The plot is as basic as any other sci fi flick: a ship crash lands on a deserted planet. It's passengers include a dead captain, the pilot forced into command, a cop, a religious man, a few children, and a deadly prisoner, who makes a hasty retreat from the ship shortly after the crash. During their search for water while bearing the heat of the 3 suns that scorch the planet, the group comes across many skeletons and a tiny ship, that only needs a bit of fixing up to leave. But the escaped convict and whatever lives underground in the darkness has other plans. This movie has a lot going for it, especially the great acting from it's stars Vin Diesel, the underrated Keith David, and the beautiful Radha Mitchell. The special effects are great as well. The violence is a little weak (although women and children are not spared), but it's enough. As for the dvd itself, i was very surprised. Most of the time movies set in darkness are very fuzzy looking (like the horrible transfer of The Relic), but there were only a few moments in Pitch Black where it looked mildly grainy. The special features of the disc aren't very special, but i'm happy with what was included. It could have been worse, and had just a trailer with it. Bottom line: awesome movie, awesome transfer, and good dvd features.

Summary: A Sleeper that got by
Review: Saw this and was stunned that I missed it in the movies. More importantly I was impressed with the cast of relatively unknowns and was blown away by Vin Diesels role. That's a character I would love to see in more movies, i.e., what happens to him after he gets off the planet? Just don't knnow how the general public and the critics miss this one. But then agains the Critics usually and rarely get it right anyway.

Summary: Exciting, Funny, and Suspenseful
Review: If you're smart, you'll watch this video. It's full of exciting scenes. My favorite character is Riddick/Vin Diesel, because he's very brave. Brave enough to fall in an all-out combat cutting an alien's guts out, and, walking right up to one of the aliens stand face-2-face not only an inch away. although rated R, this video has all you need. (Rated R for sci-fi violence and gore, and for language)

Summary: Spectacular Science Fiction and Special Effects
Review: Pitch Black is the best science fiction movie of the year. The Special Effects and Cinematography alone is worth the price of the movie or the purchase of the DVD. One of the aspects of the movie that was outstanding was the visual reference to binary star systems that do exit in the universe. The exceptional visual references to the binary stars color of light as it came down to the planet was incredible. This created an environment that help make the characters dilemma very compelling. The writers of the movie did their homework and gave us a scientific treat as well as a visual feast. The Special effects were nothing short of real genius and the digital sound was outstanding. The opening crash scene was most memorable with the crews spaceship crash landing on the barren planet. The characters in the movie were intriguing and kept your attention thorough out the movie. Radha Mitchell's character was very well written and made for excellent entertainment. She was very real and easy to identify with. Hollywood may have found their next great Science Fiction actor in Vin Diesel . His character was most believable and profound. Hollywood has found their next great science fiction actor. I highly recommend the movie for all science fiction fans.

Summary: Worthwhile and fun (if you're a kid)
Review: My dad took me to see this at a movie theater, and I was expecting a pretty ordinary monster movie with which to while away my summer vacation, but I was surpised. Pitch Black was better than I expected, with the beautiful desert visuals and the "Saturn rising" eclipse scene... And the killer-turned-hero was pretty charming with his glowing eyes (oooh) under those cool sunglasses, and his neat silver dagger. He could've been an anime hero. I liked the crossdressing girl too--she was cute, and she didn't get killed, yay! This is a movie for teens who hang out in comics shops. More fun than Godzilla! More worthwhile than Titanic! School's out. Enjoy yourself. Get some candy and Pitch Black.

Summary: Pitch Crack
Review: Let's not waste time on explaining the story of this movie because you can read the plot on this page anyway. Let's focus on the DVD instead. First a general comment about the style of filming that is being used in Pitch Black, which you will either love, or hate. The latter came out nr. 1 in my case. I did not like the usage of color, that changed over scenes making it look like a pop concert. And, although a necessity for the filming crew, the bleaching effect used to film the "alien" landscape was simply awful to look at. I was glad, not afraid, when the darkness set in. Apparently the bleaching effect was triggered by an unfortunate bad weather spell that hit the Australian desert at the time of filming. So, to still capture that scorching desert feeling without the burning presence of the sun, they bleached those shoots, giving the film the unintentional(?) look of a music video. If you like this style of filming however, you should see my TWO-star rating as a THREE-star rating but I personally feel that this style of filming took away most of the atmosphere that could have been put into this movie, and this sort of concept.

That said, there were some scarce moments where director David Twohy cleverly used the abscence of sunlight and the use of artificial light to produce some trailer worthy shots. They were infact so trailer worthy, that they were unfortunately but necessarily ALL used in the trailer. On the plus side of things, the picture qualtiy is of a very high standard, the darkness is deep and crisp. The sound quality is also excellent, especially when it's totally dark and you can hear the aliens creep about. Also, the aliens looked really cool (except for the color of their blood) and I did like the outcome of the movie even though there never really was a climax.

Vin Diesel was definitely "the man". He claimed this movie his own, the other characters failed to be interesting. Whether that was due to bad acting or bad casting, I'll leave that in the middle. The special features that are included are also rather disappointing. For example, the "making of" featurette isn't much more than a theatrical trailer with a few inbetween shots of the crew on the set and doesn't last much longer either. And because of all the disappointments, the commentary couldn't quite grip me either. And there's this feature called "raveworld Pitch Black event", a report on some kind of musical event that's supposed to have something to do with Pitch Black and definitely ties this film to looking and feeling like a music video. The report totally falls out of place and disconnects you from the film at once. Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high for this Tremors meets Aliens romp, but then again my expectations weren't THAT high.
