Summary: This one's hilarious.
Review: OK, I ordered this bad boy recently because I have fond memories of this series as a kid. Sometimes people say something is "brutally funny" and they are just kidding, Well, this was funny and brutal at the same time. Almost like watching the Cubs or the Red Sox trying to get to the World Series. Well, I digress. Anyway, this was a parody of the ultra-hard core cop shows of the 1970s and 1980s at heart, but managed to parody other genres, from film noir to suspense and other areas as well.

The two things that stand out about this show for me, besides the talented people who made it happen, are the multilayered approach to humor, where there was almost always a subtle backcurrent of almost British humor under the more over-the-top sight gags and Three Stooges style combat action; and the way they could CONSISTENTLY, and I mean almost every time, nail an entire genre or two hour movie in parody form and do it in thirty minutes (with a couple commercial breaks as well.) If you are a fan of 1970s disaster movies that laughed themselves silly watching "Airplane" or a western fan who dug "Blazing Saddles," this is probably going to be your cup of tea. The parodies they did in this one were done with love - well at least you could tell they loved what they were doing with the material. A unique and funny show. Expect standout performances from David Rasche (As gung-ho Inspector Sledge Hammer - Imagine Dirty Harry mixed in with Larry, Moe and Curly) Anne-Marie Martin (As Detective Dori Doreau, the partner saddled with keeping Sledge from causing too much chaos) Harrison Page (As the Police Captain trying to run a precinct with a crime wave and Hammer playing from both directions) and a stainless-steel-finish custom gripped Smith and Wesson .44 Magnum (As the show's love interest. Really.) Good stuff, good stuff.

Summary: A Satire That Is One Of TV's Greatest Comedies
Review: Satire rarely works on television. "Sledge Hammer!" didn't suffer the same fate as other "spoof" shows like "Police Squad" because it was very, very different. It presented an offbeat character in a very real world and had actual character development and relationships, unlike "Airplane!" or "The Naked Gun!" which is just about jokes. Despite all the outrageousness, you care about the people on "Sledge Hammer!" much like you love Maxwell Smart or Inspector Clouseau. "Sledge Hammer!" was a rather trenchant sendup of right wing machismo and it's ironic that it's being returned to us at a time when that thinking has never been more prevalent. I'm glad that mad genius Alan Spencer's wonderful series is coming out on DVD and I can't wait to hear his commentary. "Trust me, I know what I'm doing." This show is right up there with "Fawlty Towers" and the best of "Monty Python."

Summary: "Trust Me, I Know What I'm Doing!"
Review: SLEDGE HAMMER is hilarious and way ahead of its time. It had laughs as well as something to say. Current cop comedies like RENO 911 on Comedy Central pale in comparison to this masterpiece of inspired lunacy. David Rasche stars as Inspector Sledge Hammer - a bad mad cop who talks to his gun and looks for violent solutions to every problem. SLEDGE HAMMER was closer to the early works of Mel Brooks than later spoofs and had characters with some dimension and plots and mysteries better than MONK. This show should be on the air again and I'm thankful for this DVD release of one of the more origional comedies ever to air on American TV. The season finale set the tone for shows that followed like THE SIMPSONS. Allen Spencer is one of the funniest people on the planet or any other planet. "Trust me, I know what I'm doing." Great show!

Summary: Trust me you know what you are doing when you buy this DVD
Review: Sledge Hammer is one of the most incredile TV series ever. It consistenly made fun of while paying homage to something new in every episode. If you remember the series from TV you will want the DVD, if you missed it on TV you will want the DVD to see a TV classic. If you lived in the United States in the 1980's, you will enjoy this TV series. This was a counter culture show, the critics hated it, those of us fortunate enough to find it on the dial back then loved, as will you.

Summary: Trust Me On This - It's a Classic!
Review: Sledge Hammer! was one of the wittiest sitcoms on network television and it's a pleasure to see that it's finally being released on DVD. Brilliantly written, the series put other cop comedies like Police Squad and Barney Miller to shame with its great dialogue and hysterical parodies. Its satirical touch was perfectly performed by David Rasche and the rest of the cast, who could all give a lesson in subtlety to today's sitcom actors. Sometimes it was slapstick, sometimes it was satire, and sometimes it was both, but all of the times Sledge was right on target with its humor. I can't wait to get the DVDs and I'm hoping that someday Sledge will make it to the silver screen just as the far less funny Police Squad did. It's Hammer Time!!!!

Summary: Alan Spencer's Critically Acclaimed Masterpiece
Review: SLEDGE HAMMER! was one the most critically acclaimed shows of the eighties. It got rave reviews from the nations' critics and went on to garner a large international following around the world after it went into syndication abroad. SLEDGE HAMMER! was much more character oriented than POLICE SQUAD! and was often compared to Mel Brook's classic series GET SMART! I hope the rumors of a new movie version are true.

Summary: Trust me, I know what I'm doing
Review: Sledge Hammer, a supercop with the power of 500 locomotives, is a fabulous super hero parody. Every word he says, every gesture he does, is always so over the edge it's absolutely hilarious. I remember a scene in a mortuary, where the coroner said "I've never seen this in my 12 years as a coroner..." Doreau says "I've never seen anything like this in my 12 years as a cop..." And Sledge finally "I've never seen anything like this in my 49 years as a man"... "But Sledge, you're only 40!" "I WAS A MAN 9 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN DOREAU!" Try to stay serious when you hear such dialogues! I live in Europe and I can't wait to see him and his Magnum back!

Review: Sledge Lives, and about time...

At last a true life depiction of American Law Enforcement!

A very clever and knowing parody of US cop shows and for my money superior (and different) to the Naked Gun series. Often shown late night in the UK it is a must in particular for viewers who have not seen a number of the season 1 Episodes due to scheduling issues.

Good stories, some fantastic one-liners and a plethora of sight gags make for quality and enduring entertainment. A memorable and sorely missed series. Welcome back Sledge!

The best DVD release news for years. Thank you Alan Spencer. Trust him. He knows what he's doing....

Summary: Finally coming to DVD!
Review: Thank heaven this program is (as Sledge once said on an ABC commercial for the show)"Getting a little respect".Season one is very funny, even moreso than season two.I didnt see all the episodes in season one when they first aired so I am looking forward to seeing "new" shows. This program has it all....a larger than life hero, his attractive yet manly partner, the befuddled boss, and some of the most edgy one liners in TV history.David Rasche is perfect as Sledge (nobody else could do it better) Anne-Marie Martin is the very unique talent that gives real feeling to Doreau...and Harrison Page,I dont know why he didnt have a heart attack during some of his tirades with Hammer....just great.Hey,this isnt a serious program nor is it Shakespere, but its actually better....Its what comedy used to be and should be again on TV...and...trust me...I think I know what Hammer's doing!! lol
Now if only ABCs Heart of the City (which ran during season one of Sledge Hammer) could be brought out on DVD.I would finally feel satisfied totally. As it is,I am happily half way there with Sledge!

Summary: the Funniest Show that ever aired on TV!
Review: The Year was 1986 and i was about 12 years old. Every week my father and i would watch this new show called SLEDGE HAMMER! Starring David Rache as inspector Sledge Hammer. It was the funniest show on TV and it still holds this title today! It was way ahead of it's time. It has the funniest one-liners i've ever heard!

It's so over the top "politically incorrect", that's what makes the show so great. It's all about violence and more violence. There is NO WAY this could be put on TV today. But thanks to Alan Spencer(series creator) Sledge will be hitting store shelves very soon. And for the price they're selling it for, there's no reason not to buy it. If enough people buy Season 1 maybe we'll see Season 2 DVD released. So don't burn it for you're friends, make them buy it!

TO: Alan Spencer

We(the fans) want to thank you for all the time and effort you poured into the Season 1 DVD set. Sledge on DVD is dream come true. And thanks for asking the fans what we wanted on the DVD's(and doing it!) That was very cool.

"trust me, i know what i'm doing!"
