Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Review: This is one of my favourite Horror Movies after Halloween! A true Canadian gem that has gone unnoticed for so long... I am lucky enuff to live in the neighbourhood where this film was made! Pick up a copy and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Crystal Clear DVD Quality Makes It Even More Frightful! Review: A crystal clear DVD print is the perfect enhancement to what many consider the scariest movie of all time! Hitchcock's "Psycho" may be more stylish (and polished), but this one tops them all in terms of mood, and pure, realistic, scary atmosphere! The VHS version is too dark, and diminishes the overall production quality although certainly not the overall effect! This long overlooked and somewhat obscure gem has picked up steam only recently thanks to a wave of extremely positive (and well written) amazon.com reviews! Margot Kidder steals the show with outlandish and biting off beat humor, but none if it would matter quite so much without fine set ups from creative, unique, and original director, Bob Clark . . . And beautiful (and very believable) leading lady, Olivia Hussey. In fact, the entire cast deserves grand applause for pulling off a truly horrific mainstream movie miracle! It has taken nearly thirty years for this chiiller to receive its due, surpassing even "It's a Wonderful Life" and "The Wizard of Oz" in this regard. Finally, America has its third true albeit belated classic! Sometimes, words get in the way, and this definitely applies in attempting to describe "Black Christmas"--Leaving most of the suspense to the imagination of the audience (not unlike Hitchcock) lends itself to repeat viewings. One important word of caution: Do NOT view this movie during the holiday season, and NEVER before December 25--Your Christmas memories will never be the same!
Rating: Summary: Best Horror Movie Ever Made Review: this has to be the BEST horror movie ever ...I saw it years ago and never did forget it...I have seen about every horror movie there is!...and there is nothing that will scare you more than this one!.....make sure your not alone when you watch it!...get the 25th Ann. DVD of it its GREAT!!!.....
Rating: Summary: Still makes my palms sweat Review: I had first seen this movie in the very early 1980's on HBO. I just watched it again and this movie continues to make my palms sweat. Bob Clark uses excellent camera techs and perhaps is the first Director using the camera as the killer's eyes which we the auidence see his movements. I don't want to spoil anything about the ID the killer, but clearly we know at the very end it is not who we thought or were lead to believe. Furthermore other reviwers said this took place in Canada. Well it does take place somewhere in the USA, perhaps a New England area. If you look closely on Lt. Fuller's (John Saxon) desk you clearly see an American Flag.
Rating: Summary: Too predictable Review: I love to be scared and that's the problem with this movie: It's not scary! This movie is so predicable, it simply becomes boring. So despite the wonderful performances of Oliva Hussey, Margot Kidder and John Saxon, the overwhelming deficiencies of the plot can not be overcome. If for some reason you absolutely must see this film, rent it, don't waste your money buying it.
Rating: Summary: a word of caution.... Review: The film is a classic...but this is just to note that this version of the DVD is apparently the EXACT same disc as the Canadian import that is available, just re-distributed. It was reported months ago that this would be a widescreen presentation release from Music Video Distributors, but sadly, it is not. Hopefully this film will one day get the release on DVD it deserves.
Rating: Summary: The Most Psychotic Killer Ever Commited To Celluloid. Review: I saw this film for the first time when I was a child, late at night, with the lights off and was scared and awestruck by this truly terrifying and groundbreaking film. Never before or since has there been a killer in a horror film so insane. The script, acting, and humor are top notch. The suspense is almost unbearable because of what's not seen or known to the viewer. Your imagination is what this film uses to frighten you, not blood and gore galore. It has the most original ending (not done since, that I know of) I've ever seen in a film of this genre. I think last years "Limbo" was the first to repeat such an ending, 25 years later! I'm stunned this film wasn't a huge hit when originally released in 1975. I've owned a copy of it on VHS for the last 5 years and the tagline on the cover truly prepares you for viewing the film: "If this movie doesn't make your skin crawl, it's on too tight." Every person I've shown the film to has thoroughly enjoyed and been totally creeped out by it, and they'd never heard of it! What a shame. Hopefully now that it's being released on DVD, it will be rediscovered by the public and be placed on critic's list's as one of the best horror/suspense films EVER. Warning: This film should NOT be viewed alone.
Rating: Summary: BLACK CHRISTMAS Review: GREAT MOVIE! ONE OF THE BEST HORROR MOVIES EVER! IF YOU LIKED THIS, YOU MUST SEE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS-STARRING SALLY FIELDS.AWESOME!
Rating: Summary: Truly Scary Review: This is an overlooked gem of a movie. The key word here is "creepy" and the movie's atmosphere is successful at creating that feeling. The killer here is threatening because we only see parts of him (arms, a hand, a shadow, his eye). The first call is simply obscene but the rest of the calls are unsettling as the killer/stalker sounds as if he is possessed by a few different spirits. At first you want to laugh but then the voices are so twisted you can only listen in skin crawling awe. It seems almost as if the killer is part of the house itself. The ending is my favorite as we leave the heroine's bedroom to enter the dark recesses of the house and the only sound is that of a clicking clock. The movie's soundtrack is all about creepy ambient sounds and silence is also used to add to the discomfort. This is much better than soundtracks that dominate and distract (with exception to Argento's "Suspiria" which put it to great use as it was meant to be jarring to the viewer). Great to see Andrea Martin in what may be her only serious acting effort and of course Margot Kidder is also wonderful (could she be playing herself?). A truly amusing and frightening film.
Rating: Summary: Santa's got a lump of coal for you this year Review: Probably one of the best thrillers of this type I've ever seen, and unfortunately, one of the more obscure films of the 70's. It involves a sorority house and a killer that's crept up into the attic. The only girls left in the house are the ones that haven't departed for the holidays, and eventually they regret that decision. Initially, the campaign of terror begins with a series of ghoulish prank calls. The caller, speaking in about twenty different voices---or identities---is absolutely koo-koo for Coco Puffs; the calls vary between filth and death threats. This inevitably leads to the horror formula where the killer is "calling from inside the house" which remains a kind of creepy medium even after thirty years. As it moves on at a reasonably fast pace, the movie of course points you towards probable suspects. In the meanwhile, the bodies are piling up. Eventually, the in-house protagonist list gets streamlined down to the prettiest of the girls, who has yet to realize that most of her friends are dead upstairs. Specific comments made during the prank calls soon convince her that the killer is her own jilted boyfriend, who seems a likely enough suspect. Underlying everything is a morbid sense of humor, that slanted kind of Chainsaw Massacre humor. I don't want to ruin the movie for any first-timers, so without hinting at the nature or identity of the killer, I'll just say that I recommend this movie highly. In years to come, this kind of film became most frequently replaced by straight out slasher movies with little or no suspense behind them. Dark thrillers such as Black Chistmas should be enjoyed for the rarities they are.
